The first edition of the Greek Folk Dance Resource Manual was first written in 1991 in an attempt by the author, Charlie Kyriacou ( Charlie's Photobiography - 34 photos, takes a few minutes to download ), to share information with Greek folk dance directors and enthusiasts concerning Greek folk dance, music, folklore and costumes. Since information and people's address and phone numbers change quickly, the manual is continually updated. The ninth edition was completed in October 2000. This web page also presents price lists from different Greek folklore organizations, articles written by the manual author and other educational aids relevant to the understanding of Greek folk dance.

1. About this page After Greek dancing for a while, I found myself with a bunch of questions. Why do some dances have more than one name? Are all of these variations really variations, or is someone doing the dance wrongly? And just how many dances are out there? I did some research in December of 1995, and here's some of what I dug up. Dance names on this page are included both in Greek characters and Roman-alphabet transliteration. Song names and Greek-language books in the bibliography are given in Greek characters only. To read the Greek characters, you need a font compatible with the ELOT 928 (ISO 8859-7) specification, which is the standard on the Internet. You can download these fonts by clicking here . If you do not have the Greek fonts, the Greek characters will appear as gibberish; however, you will only be missing the names of songs and some of the books, so fear not. This paragraph used to promise that I would add pictures, music, and more dances. Unfortunately, now that I've finished school, I don't have much time to maintain this page. I'd rather do the dances (or play sandouri) than write about them! I recently updated information about the Greek-American dance known as the "Macedonian," but other than that, the dance information has not been updated since December 1996. For the foreseeable future, I will be updating the links only.

Welcome To The
Philhellenes Greek Dancers Home Page The Philhellenes are a London-based group of Greek and English friends brought together by a love of Greek folk dance. Through our performances we aim to preserve the authenticity and spirit of Greek dances and to make them accessible to a wider audience in London and across the country. Since our formation in 1991 we have danced at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the British Museum , at the Truro Eastbourne and Glastonbury international dance festivals, and at numerous charitable events. Our repertoire covers dances from the Greek mainland, the islands, and areas which now form part of Turkey . We perform in traditional costumes, some of them antique, others re-created as close as possible to the originals, and all accessorised with authentic jewellery. One of the aims of our dancers is to work with the children of the Greek community schools to develop their interest in their cultural heritage. In this way, we hope to encourage them to become the next generation of Greek folk dancers. This website will be updated regularly so please keep checking it to see what we are doing. We hope you will one day be able to attend one of our workshops or performances.

http://www.annaswebart.com/culture/dancehistory/history
Antiquity / Origin of Dance
Ancient Greeks believed that dancing was invented by the Gods and therefore they had associated it with their religious and worshipping ceremonies. They believed that the Gods offered this gift to some select mortals only, who in turn taught dancing to their fellow-men. Greek mythology attributes the origin of dancing to Rea who taught this art to Kourites in Crete. Kronos had dethroned his father Uranus. Since he was afraid that he might also be dethroned by his own children, he was eating them as soon as they were born. His wife Rea, however, deceived Kronos when their last child Zeus was born. She hid Zeus in a dark cave in Crete and instead, she gave a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes to Kronos to eat. She also asked Kourites, who were armed half-gods, to dance a war dance around the cave, shouting and striking their shields with their swords, so that Kronos would not hear baby Zeus crying. When later Zeus dethroned his father, Kourites became the priests in the new world. Their decedents continued these war dances as part of their religious ceremonies. The oldest Greek historical sources come from Crete where an ancient civilization, the Minoan civilization, flourished around 3000 - 1400 BC. The inhabitants of Crete cultivated music, song and dance, as part of their religious life and for their entertainment, as well. Sometime during the fifteenth century BC, Crete was overrun by invaders from mainland Greece, and eventually it was controlled by Mycenae.
