Actually the hardest part about learning to dance is the initial decision to come in and start lessons. It seems that most people have many unanswered questions or impressions over what it's all about, so let me explain...
There are three types of lessons offered at the Studio:
PRIVATE:
Private lessons are as the name implies, one on one training with an instructor. You will dance with the instructor during the lesson. Private lessons provide high quality training and enable the student to enjoy the fastest learning curve. Private lessons must be booked in advance with the receptionist or instructor. These are booked on the hour and require preferably eight hours of notice prior to cancellation.
PRIVATE GROUP:
Private Group Lessons are given by an instructor for 2 to 5 couples who are learning to dance together. The instructor works with all the couples for the duration of the lesson. The instructor will periodically dance with each member of the group to clarify a movement. Private Group Lessons are a great way to obtain advanced input specific to your needs.
GROUP LESSONS:
Private Group Lessons are given by an instructor to a group of three or more students. The focus of the instructor is to teach the group two to four steps per session in a particular dance style. The lesson is oriented to working on your own, under the watchful eye of the instructor, to learn the steps. Pairing with another student is done throughout the lesson to provide insight as to how the step is danced with a partner. The instructor will also periodically dance with a student individually to show the class the step or to clarify the movement. Group lessons are the most inexpensive way to acquire basic dance information and to learn step patterns.

Two contestants literally danced to their deaths right on the dance floor. The dangers, however, did not stop couples from participating, nor spectators from coming to witness others dance themselves to utter exhaustion. The competitions continued on until the early 1940s. For the unemployed, these tests of stamina and displays of fatigue provided an escape from the dreariness and hopelessness of The Depression. Although originally popular only with young black Americans, Chubby Checker helped the dance to break into the mainstream when he appeared on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. Not only was the Twist a hit with the music industry, but it could also be seen in a number of films. In the early sixties, movies such as Twist Around the Clock Viva La Twist and Teenage Millionaire continued the new craze of Twisting.

1920's Fads and Trends
Mr. Finley U.S History Project Mahjongg
Introduced to the United States in 1922, the Chinese game of mahjongg took hold of Americans within a year with millions of enthusiastic followers. Women of mahjongg clubs wore silk kimonos to play in proper attire while the game became the concrete form of entertainment within fraternity houses and dormitories. By 1923, mahjongg sets were outselling radios, and American entreprenuers quickly jumped on the bandwagon. Chicago meat packers sent bones to China for carving. Sets were sold at prices ranging from a few dollars to $500. American novices paid for rulebooks and Chinese Americans to teach them the ritziest game of the 20's.
Dancing!!
Since the 1920s was a time of celebration, there were many fads. People loved to dance, especially the Charleston, Fox-trot, and the shimmy. Dance marathons were something everyone went to every weekend. Extremely popular during the great depression
New York World stated "Of all the crazy competitions ever invented, the dancing marathon wins by a considerable margin of lunacy."

Testimonials - Wedding Couples
Here is what some of our wedding couples shared with us about their wedding preparation lessons at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio:
Having our wedding dance choreographed helped to make our first dance as husband and wife a moment we - and probably most of our guests - will remember for the rest of our lives. If we had not started taking ballroom dance lessons several months before our wedding, our wedding dance would have been just another high school slow dance. Instead, we astounded friends and family with an elegant Waltz. Even the catering staff stopped to watch and, afterwards asked if we were professional dancers! If they were impressed with us, we can’t imagine what they would have thought if they could have seen the instructors at Fred Astaire. - Kerry and Tucker Evans We absolutely love the instructors and the atmosphere at FADS. They helped us put together such an incredible program for our wedding day. We did it in just 8 weeks. Every one of our wedding guests was thrilled with our dancing. Especially when we made our entrance into the reception with a spectacular Tango.

Teen Dancing
Figure 1.The jitterbug was adopted by American teen agers in the late 1930s. It was danced to Swing musicactually Jazz by a different name. These New York teenagers were photographed "struting their stuff" in 1937. Notice the saddle shoes.
Age Group
Often pre-teen boys are not to interested in dancing, although many pre-teen girls are. By the teen years, boys increasingly become interested in dancing as well.
Individual Dances
American Origins
In the 20th century many of the popular teen dances have been American in origin. We are not entirely sure why this was. America's large Black minority with an expeimental approach to music and an African influence could be one factor. Another factor is the emergence of the entertainment industry, first Hollywood (1920s), television (1950s), music videos (1970s) helped to carry America fads and fashions around the world. Also teen agers in America were generally freer to express themselves, even in ways their parents might disapprove, than in more tradition-bound Europe.
Political Connotations
The American origins of these dances have not always been well received by authorities in other countries. These dances were viewed as symbolic of youthful rebellion whivh raised parental eyebrows and perhaps those of fundamentalist preachers. In Europe they caught the attention of the NAZI Gestrapo and Soviet KGB. The American origins and sence of rebellion were not to be tolerated in totalitarian countries where the government is actively involved in molding young minds. The Gestapo in NAZI Germany was ordered to stamp out jazz and swing music. Jass was especially hated by the NAZIs because of its Black origins and the fact that some Jewish musiscians played it.
