Summer Theatre Programs Here are just a few of our most popular programs:
Session 1 - Monday, July 12- Friday, July 16, 2004 (SOLD OUT) Session 2 - Monday, August 2 - Friday, August 6, 2004 For five unforgettable, non-stop days, young people ages 10 to 17 from all over the world participate in our summer theatre program in the heart of the New York City theatre district. We introduce campers to the world of Broadway through classes in dance, voice, acting, as well as various workshops such as make-up, stage combat, physical comedy, and mask work and other related subjects. And since all this requires loads of energy, we provide our campers healthy lunch, snacks, and drinks daily. This summer, as always, we're offering a week full of special surprises, including workshops with Broadway artists, plus our ninth annual Salute to Singin' and Dancin' Kids luncheon, where campers get to meet kids currently performing on Broadway. They also get a ticket to see the Wednesday matinee of a Broadway show. Past years' shows include Gypsy and Kiss Me Kate! On the last day, campers present the Family Finale, a fabulous presentation for family and friends to witness exactly what went into these extraordinary five days. The presentation highlights include "mini-musicals" -past shows include Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, and On the Town. It also includes our traditional Gypsy Showcase, which requires our campers to work together as a team to create an original two-minute musical number that showcases both their inventiveness and individual talents

Photo: Kim Kenney Nostalgic. Classic. Esoteric. Those are the three words that best describe Atlanta Ballet's Spring Fever, a popourri of poetic motion running at the Fabulous Fox March 12 - 15.
"Whether you're interested in traditional ballet, contemporary styles or old-fashioned hoofing, there's something for you at our March rep," said Artistic Director John McFall. "Spring Fever celebrates a variety of dance styles. Every piece tells a distinct story in a distinct way."
The evening begins with the world premiere of Precipice, choreographed by McFall with music by Atlanta Ballet's Executive/Music Director Robert Chumbley. It is followed by the classic Swan Lake, Act II and the Atlanta premiere of McFall's swing sensation Juke.
Originally choreographed for BalletMet, Juke is a memory piece of days-gone-bydays filled with the sounds of Benny Goodman, the Andrew Sisters, Louie Armstrong and the swing styles of the early 1940s.

Click here to download Real Player SWAN LAKE, the last of the great 19th century Russian ballets, is a work of emotional intensity, inventive choreography and glorious music, a lyrical and moving musical-psychological dance drama. Although SWAN LAKE was also the last of the famed Tschaikovsky-Petipa-Ivanov ballets, it was actually the composer's first ballet score. In 1875, Tschaikosvky had received a commission from the Moscow Imperial Theatre (now called the Bolshoi Ballet). He was paid 800 rubles for a new four-act ballet, a sum that was nearly half of what he earned during a whole year teaching at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg. The first performance of SWAN LAKE took place in Moscow in 1877, and it was a dismal failure. The staging was done by an uninspired choreographer whose work was dull and routine. The conductor didn't like the music, and the ballerina who was to play Odette had declared that the score was too difficult to dance to, so she felt free to insert her favorite music and choreography from other ballets. SWAN LAKE was soon dropped from the repertory, and Tschaikovsky, who blamed his music for the failure, would not write for the ballet for another 12 years. When he resumed, it was to compose the scores for THE SLEEPING BEAUTY (1890) and THE NUTCRACKER.

There are lots of great things to do in and around Boston and beyond. Need ideas? Summer Stuff 2004 is full of good ideas. Read it through, circle the ones that interest you, then visit their Web sites or call. They're waiting to hear from you. Next, apply—now. In many cases, you can apply on-line or print an application from the Web site. Don’t be put off by the cost of some programs. Many have scholarships, and they are looking for Boston students. In fact, some programs are only for students who go to the Boston Public Schools. Good luck—and have a great summer!
