AABP embraces disabled livestock, dairy cattle welfare guidelines
As recommended by the AABP Animal Welfare Committee, the AABP board of directors endorsed the position on disabled livestock that the AVMA adopted in June 2002 ( see JAVMA July 15, 2002 , page 181, or call (800) 248-2862, Ext. 6666). The new position distinguishes between terminal and nonterminal markets. The committee also endorsed the animal welfare guidelines on dairy cattle released recently by the Food Marketing Institute and the National Council of Chain Restaurants. The committee assisted in developing them. Veal calf guidelines are under review, and beef cattle guidelines are being formulated. The FMI/NCCR program brings together experts in veterinary medicine, animal science, and agricultural production. They are identifying science-based, objective, measurable indices for desirable practices in the growing, handling, and processing of food animals. In 2001, the AVMA also joined the effort. According to Dr. James Reynolds of Visalia, Calif., chair of the AABP Animal Welfare Committee, now the dairy quality assurance guidelines need to be marketed to educate producers. To help producers come into compliance, the Dairy and Beef Quality Assurance Center in Stratford, Iowa, has developed a booklet and software for distribution through veterinarians. This fall, the AABP committee intends to test-market the booklet on clients at the University of California-Davis.

It covers the importance of body condition scoring; what it is; the nutritional priorities of cows; visual body condition scoring; and using scoring to evaluate the herd. Colour photographs of the relevant scores are included. Written by A. Manuel Encinias, Extension Associate, and Greg Lardy, Beef Cattle Specialist, of the Department of Animal and Range Sciences, North Dakota State University. dairy farming dairy cows body fat body condition ... Canadian Dairy Network : CDN The CDN was created in 1995 as part of a federal government decision to privatise all genetic evaluation activities in Canada. The CDN was formed to provide dairy cattle genetic evaluations and to establish a national dairy database for the dairy cattle improvement industry. This site provides information on the CDN, its organisation, committees, aims and activities. In addition, it is possible to search for genetic evaluations of specific bulls or cows, and proofs are available for both production and conformation traits. Evaluations of specific breeds are also available and data files can be downloaded in compressed format. An inbreeding calculator can be accessed online. The site provides access to a collection of proof and information articles, and a list of links to industry-related Web sites is also available.

http://www.ngoindia.com/baif/livestock.htm
LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT
A small family with their crossbred cow. Dairy Cattle Development, a powerful tool for providing gainful self employment to the rural poor, is implemented through 700 centers. A trained technician operates the Center, which covers 10-12 villages within a radius of 8-10 km and serves 1200-1500 families at their doorsteps. Presently, about 0.8 million cows and buffaloes mostly owned by small farmers are bred and over 200,000 milk animals are produced every year.
BAIF has maintained an elite herd of Jersey and Holstein Friesian breeds at its Central Research Station at Urulikanchan and is freezing semen of exotic and native dairy breeds of cattle and buffaloes and selected breeds of goats. Over 25 million doses of semen have been produced so far. To improve the profitability of dairy husbandry, BAIF has developed low cost feed using agricultural and industrial wastes and introduced hardy forage crops suitable for wastelands. This has helped even the landless to maintain dairy animals.
The crossbred cows come into milk production at the age of 28-30 months and produce an average of 2300-2700 liters of milk per lactation. BAIF has demonstrated that with three crossbred cows, a family can come out of poverty while improving the eco-system.
