Electric Fence for Dairy Cattle
Dairy cattle are among the easiest animals to contain with electric fence because they are relatively docile and are used to daily human contact. There are several options for fencing dairy cattle. Depending on a variety of factors, the number of fence wires can vary from one to six, depending on:
size of the cows life expectancy of the fence whether you will keep calves with the cows if you are concerned about keeping out predators whether you use rotational grazing To safely contain most dairy cattle, you need a fence controller that maintains a minimum of 2,000 volts on the fence line. Voltage levels are impacted by vegetation on the fence line, length of fence and type of wire. Note: A minimum of 5,000 volts on the fence line is required to keep out predators. We recommend you purchase a Zareba fence controller capable of maintaining these voltage levels.

Dairy Cattle
Milk and dairy beef sales total $100 million per year from approximately 420 dairy herds with 40,000 head of milk cows. The Extension Service provides research-based information to producers and industry personnel to help them be more competitive in an increasingly competitive market. Environmental regulations and the ability to comply with them is a primary concern of producers. Waste management is emphasized in dairy Extension programs. Since Arkansas and neighboring states normally rank in the bottom few states in the U.S. for production per cow, emphasis is also placed on improving efficiency of production. Forage quality and usage, improved herd management, financial record-keeping (including Dairy Herd Improvement Association records), ration-balancing, and cow comfort, including heat-stress management, are a few subjects addressed by Extension. Sire selection and reproduction are also stressed because the genetic levels of the herd and overall fertility have marked effects on net profit of the herd. The state of the U.S. and international dairy industry may see changes that are even more dramatic in the future. The ongoing reorganization of federal milk marketing orders and shifts in milk production areas within the U.S. make Extension

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE LIVESTOCK PROGRAMS
The Livestock component of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service is divided into four main project areas. Each area strives to provide the farmers of the Virgin Islands with the most accurate and up to date livestock information available.
Beef Cattle Improvement Program
The beef cattle program of the Cooperative Extension Service focuses on identification and performance testing. It works with all of the cattle farmers in the Virgin Islands from the large purebred Senepol breeder to the small backyard producer. The program operates along the guidelines of the Beef Improvement Federation and assists producers in the identification of animals, weighing of animals and provides selection assistance for replacement animals. The goals of the program are to provide beef cattle farmers with the technology and education necessary for a profitable enterprise. The primary breed of beef cattle in the Virgin Islands is the Senepol . This breed was developed on St. Croix to meet the needs of the tropical beef producer.
The cattle were classified in the 1970's in a cooperative effort between the then College of the Virgin Islands and the original four Senepol farms. The breed has now gone global and can be found on almost every continent. For more information on the Senepol cattle visit the UVI Senepol homepage.

Raising Cattle And Other Livestock
Cattle are among the most important of farm animals. They are used for meat, milk, leather, medicine and more. Beef by-products enable us to use 99% of every beef animal. In some countries, cattle are still a main source of power for plows, carts and wagons. Cattle belong to the ox family along with bison, yak, and water buffalo. Cattle digest their food by bringing it back to the mouth from the second chamber (reticulum) of the four chambered stomach. This food is called a cud. The first stomach chamber is called the paunch. TEXAS LIVESTOCK DIRECTORY Texas is one of the country's top 10 dairy states and is the largest milk-producing state in the south. Its 348,000 dairy cows annually produce 667 million gallons of milk an average of 1,914 gallons per cow to rank the state sixth in number of dairy cows and seventh in milk production nationwide. On-farm milk sales generate cash receipts of $799 million a year. With an approximate economic impact of $2.4 billion, dairying is the fourth-largest agricultural industry in Texas, following beef, cotton and nursery crops. Dairy Cattle Overview Dairying in the United States follows the traditions of Europe, where many dairy breeds and stabling conditions arose. Dairying can be found in all 50 states. The dairy cow is a major contributor to the world food supply. Her relatively high efficiency of feed utilization among farm animals and her ability as a ruminant to utilize feed supplies unfit for human consumption enhance her stature as a producer of large quantities of high quality protein.
