Why Test Feeds?
Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein. Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. Feed tests can help establish the dollar value of a forage, in the cash market or in personal use inventories. Use these tests to establish the value of your forage and to help determine what forages to feed, buy, or sell. Forage tests are useful to evaluate production practices like fertilization, time of harvest, method of harvest, etc., that may influence forage quality. Management skills can improve by learning how changes in production practices affect the quality of your forages.

Livestock: Dairy Farming
Current Situation
The opportunity for dairy farming, in the state of Mississippi, is excellent. Mississippi is a deficit producing state resulting in milk being imported from sources outside the state to meet market needs. A good market is available to any producer located in any part of the state. There are a significant number of producers going out of business every year. However, cow number and total production is not going down as rapidly as number of herds. Herd size and production per cow is increasing at a rapid rate. In December, 2001, there were 310 dairies in the state with an average production of 14,200 pounds of milk per cow per year and an average of 113 cows per herd. Total dairy cows in the state were 35,000. Most of the dairies in Mississippi are located in the southern portion of the state, primarily due to the ability of the south Mississippi producer to grow large quantities of ryegrass. Some of these producers can graze ryegrass seven to eight months of the year. The December DHIA averages show an average production of 18,364 pounds of milk per cow per year and the average number of cows per herd on DHIA is 178. The highest rolling herd average for milk production of any herd on DHIA in Mississippi was 28,294 pounds. There are only 29 percent of the herds in Mississippi on DHIA, but this represents 36 percent of the cows and 45 percent of the total milk produced in the state. The difference in production of all cows versus cows on official tests indicates the need for significant improvement in management on Mississippi dairy farms.

Genetic Evaluation for Dairy Cattle
The genetic evaluation for dairy bulls was started in 1989 by Livestock Improvement Association of Japan, Inc. The maternal grandsire model was used for this evaluation and the estimated breeding values and its reliabilities were published. The genetic evaluation using animal model was started in 1992. The estimated breeding values and its reliabilities have been computed and published by the National Livestock Breeding Center, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishiries. The model is as follows. (1)Production traits y = h + c + m + a + u + p + e y : Observation of the 305 day milk, fat, SNF or protein yield or percent h : Fixed effect of management group defined by herd, year of calving c : Random effect defined by herd, year of calving, country where sire is kept (domestic or foreign) and parity; when a herd- year-country is not divided by parity

Research is currently focused on unraveling the medical ecology of C. parvum and G. duodenalis infection in calves, and assessing the risk of environmental contamination fr om C. parvum oocysts and G. duodenalis cysts in flush water.
Study Findings : Conditional on the sensitivity of our diagnostic tests, neither pre- nor post-parturient cows, nor the soil within the dry and calving pen appears to serve as a significant reservoir of infection for calves. However, we are re-examining this conclusion by carefully modeling the sensitivity of the direct fluorescent antibody procedure to provide a valid, statistical underpinning for the concept, "Detection Threshold."
