Dairy Cattle Livestock Parasite Control
Insect pests cause significant losses each year for Mississippi milk producers. These pests cause losses by decreasing milk production and by transmitting diseases. In addition, the presence of large numbers of insects, particularly house flies and stable flies, can impact quality of life on the dairy and of your neighbors. This guide is intended as an aid in selecting the proper insecticide for the pest or pests involved. In all cases, read the label of an insecticide product before buying it. The directions for use and the limitations noted on a label may work for one farm and not another. Generally speaking, insecticides cleared for use on beef cattle may also be used on nonlactating dairy cattle, unless the label forbids such use. READ THE LABEL! Due to health department regulations, you should be careful about using insecticides in the milkroom. It is recommended that only natural pyrethrins be used in the milkroom. Pyrethrins are available in ready-to-use aerosols of .7 to 1 percent active ingredient.
House Flies
Begin control of house flies with a good sanitation program. Clean up areas where houseflies breed. You must develop and follow a manure-management program to control house flies. When spraying surfaces for house fly control, wettable powders (WP's) last longer than do emulsifiable concentrates (EC's).

Cattle: (Bos)
Remains of domesticated cattle dating to 6,500 B.C. have been found in Turkey and other sites in the Near East approach this age also. Some authorities date the domestication of cattle as early as 10,000 years ago, and others almost half that amount of time. Regardless of the time frame it is generally accepted that the domestication of cattle followed sheep, goats, pigs and dogs. Modern domestic cattle evolved from a single early ancestor, the aurochs. In addition to prehistoric painting that help us identify the appearance of the auroch the species actually survived until relatively modern times. It is believed the last surviving member of the species was killed by a poacher in 1627 on a hunting reserve near Warsaw, Poland. The species may have survived in small number in other parts of the world until a later date but there is no evidence to support this theory. Early cattle served a triple-purpose. They provided meat, milk and labor to their owners. Eventually their draft purposes were largely replaced by horses and much later by machinery so they were selected more for single or in some cases dual purposes. Animal Science majors in the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture (RHSA) receive both theoretical and hands-on education in the management of livestock, dairy cattle, poultry and horses. Students interested in dairy or livestock production concentrate on the influence of genetics, physiology, nutrition, and health on the economic production of animals. Courses are designed to maintain a balance between theoretical and practical aspects of animal production. Species studied include dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, swine, poultry and horses. The Associate of Applied Science degree program allows students to select from a variety of animal science and related courses. Formal and informal learning settings offer students the opportunity to design a unique educational experience, with exposure to all aspects of the industry. Students work directly with animals on campus, and may also choose to pursue off-campus work experience or internship opportunities in production or related enterprises. The Dairy/Livestock program in the Ratcliffe Hicks school is offered by the Department of Animal Science . The department undertakes comprehensive teaching, research and outreach activities.

    Why Test Feeds?
Nutrient concentration can vary considerably in feeds, especially forages. Protein in alfalfa hay can range from 10 to 25 percent or more of the dry matter; grass hay will contain between four and 18 percent protein. Use feed tests to target specific feeds to different livestock. Feed high quality forage to the most productive livestock or when nutrient needs are highest. Feed lower quality forage to animals with lower nutrient needs. Feed tests can help establish the dollar value of a forage, in the cash market or in personal use inventories. Use these tests to establish the value of your forage and to help determine what forages to feed, buy, or sell. Forage tests are useful to evaluate production practices like fertilization, time of harvest, method of harvest, etc., that may influence forage quality. Management skills can improve by learning how changes in production practices affect the quality of your forages.

    • Read and understand the label on every insecticide used for any purpose at a dairy.
    • If instructions for use on dairy cattle or dairy premises are not on the label, do not use the insecticide. For example, some insecticides used for crop insects cannot be used at dairies (as stated on the label) because of the possibility of insecticide residues in the milk.
    • Label directions may be different for lactating and nonlactating dairy cattle. Most insecticides used on beef animals also can be used on nonlactating dairy cattle, but there may be restrictions on time of treatment prior to freshening.
    • Keep pesticides in original containers and in locked storage.
    • Do not contaminate milk, feed or water when using an insecticide.
    Fly Control
Sanitation. House, stable and blow flies may be pests of dairy cattle kept on lots. These flies (filth flies) breed in spilled feed, bedding, decaying organic matter and manure mixed with moisture, dirt and organic matter. Sanitation is the first and most important step in control of filth flies. Clean cattle pens, drainage areas, loafing sheds, stalls, feeding aprons, spilled feed and other decaying organic matter at 10-day intervals to minimize fly breeding. If this decaying organic matter is spread on fields, spread it thin enough for rapid drying. The material can be spread in the lot and, when dry, incorporated into mounds or low spots within the lot.

    Introduction
Every dairy producer has cattle that are too fat or too thin for their stage of lactation. Failure to recognize these cows and take action costs dearly for disease treatments, lost milk production, and decreased fertility. This Factsheet describes how to score the body condition of cows and compare them to normal scores for various stages of lactation. The system described here was developed by E.E. Wildman, University of Vermont. Body condition is a reflection of the body fat reserves carried by the animal. These reserves can be used by the cow in periods when she is unable to eat enough to satisfy her energy needs. In high producing cows, this normally happens during early lactation, but it may also happen when cows get sick, are fed poor quality feeds, or feed intake is restricted. After a period of weight loss, cows should be fed more than their requirements to restore normal body condition.

    Introduction
In September 1994, Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) virus killed all Eddie's yearling heifers and one-half of his calves. He vaccinates his cattle with a killed 9-way vaccine. In November each year, his mature cows and bred heifers get a booster dose. Calves greater than 5 months of age and open heifers, get a primary series with two doses. So how could this wreck happen? Certainly, there must have been unprotected animals and challenge by the virus. Let's take a closer look at Eddie's vaccination program. Eddie vaccinates once yearly in November. By September, he had many unvaccinated calves greater than 6 months of age. The calves born between June 1993 and April 1994 were old enough to vaccinate before the outbreak. However, the once yearly program left calves ranging in age from 6 to 17 months unprotected. And those were the calves affected in the current BVD outbreak.
