Salvador Dali, Lobster Telephone, 1936 S u r r e a l i s m a n d B u u e l Return to Film History Main Page Introduction: Surrealism: arose out of the artistic, social and political responses to World War One. Part of the “project” of Modernism - and its chief influences were the writings of Marx, and Freud. In those respects, therefore, it can be allied with Expressionism. Although there are many differences...
Background to Surrealism 1) General: REACTION AGAINST THE WAR “Art” - the traditional arts - are seen to be implicated in that corrupt system. Surrealism would grow out of this profound dissatisfaction with the status quo and the Establishment .
2) Dadaism - a precursor of Surrealism - lasted from around 1915 - 1923. Robert Short notes “Dada’s Twin Functions of Cultural desecration and affirmation”. Significant Dada artists include: Max Ernst, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, George Grosz.
Cabaret Voltaire (1916) (Hugo Ball) in Zurich - deeply subversive - very confrontational - attacking audience expectations Marcel Duchamp: developed his series of “Ready Mades” - sculpture installations using existing objects - most famously

‘Collected French Writings’
by Jean Arp, edited by Marcel Jean, translated by Joachim Neugroschel, Calder and Boyars, 1974 Margaret Davies ‘Surrealism is dead.’ Even before Breton’s death in 1966 he was having to refute that claim. It would seem to be a question of whether one sees it as the activity of a particular group of richly talented artists and writers which, under Breton’s leadership, flourished in the twenties and early thirties and gradually dispersed from the late thirties on, or—‘Long live surrealism’—whether it stands for a general spirit of revolt, the liberation of the imagination from the constraints of reason and the conscious mind, that is to say an adventure continually to be reinvented. The fact that of recent years so many academics have moved in and not only analysed individual writers (in monumental and admirable studies like Marguerite Bonnet’s on André Breton and Michel Sanouille’s Dada à Paris) but also tabled the day-to-day zig-zags of personal polemics and political alignments, would seem to underline its position as a specific movement in the history of art and literature and ideas and to define its chronological limits—at least in France where one of the pre-requisites for the subject of a Doctorat d’Etat thesis is that he, she or it must be safely dead.

Everything had to be demolished. We would begin again after the tabula rasa. At the Cabaret Voltaire we began by shocking the bourgeois, demolishing his idea of art, attacking common sense, public opinion, education, institutions, museums, good taste, in short, the whole prevailing order."[6] Documents of Dada and Surrealism: Dada and Surrealist Journals in the Mary Reynolds Collection dada was always more than just an artistic mind game. dada was a social revolution. it was spawned as a reaction to the absurdity and the mass horrors of world war one. here in the early 21st century we exist as a direct consequence of dadaist intent. dada r us. we are living full immersion inside the art of cut-up and recontextualised narrative. it is as the air we breathe, invisible, unconscious, constant.

Louis Aragon Call for availability The Adventures of Telemachus by Louis Aragon "Aragon did not have to liberate his mind through automatic exercises, but by mastering and playing with the narrative devices of classical episodic fiction he succeeded in freeing himself from the constraints of mimeticism in regard to fable, meaning, and language... descending into the diabolical nirvana of dada."
