    Introduction
You can read two essays on feminism in the Czech Republic:
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism Why Western Feminism Isn't Working in the Czech Republic
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism
    by
For somebody observing the situation from outside the country, the history of Czech feminism may seem to be limited to the era after the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent implementation of various Western discourses in the sociocultural milieu of the new democracy. Before 1989, the word "feminism" was almost never used to designate any phenomenon present in Czechoslovakia, it referred to Western ideology which was presented as not applicable to the situation of Czech women'. But this fact is only a question of naming, and even without using the word "feminism", Czech lands have a long tradition of dealing with women's issues, especially in the sphere of education. If we turn to the real historiography, we can see that women participated very actively in major events throughout the history of Czech lands, but there are especially two major historical periods that should not escape our attention, because they provide token examples of the position of women in society at the time: the Hussites movement and the Czech National Revival. The Hussites movement is famous for its emphasis on equality and the demand that the Bible should be available in the language of the people (at the time when all Masses were in Latin) and that everyone be educated to read and understand the Word, which addressed both men and women. Their ideals of equality attracted an enormous number of people, without a radical separation of the two sexes. As the Hussites period has always been considered one of the most important events in Czech history, so, many times, the necessity of education for both sexes was taken for granted as vital for the good of the nation(3).

... Mediterranean Guide Czech Republic: Overview The Czech Republic is situated approximately in the geographical center of Europe and has an area of 78,866 sq. km. It is a landlocked country 326 km from the Baltic and 322 km from the Adriatic. It shares borders with Germany (810 km), Poland (762 km), Austria (466 km) and Slovakia (265 km). The highest point of elevation is the peak of Mt. Snezka (1,602 m above sea level) and the lowest point of elevation is near Hoensko where the River Labe leaves Czech territory (117 m above sea level).
Thanks to its long and rich history and the diversity of its natural environment, the Czech Republic is a great attraction for the millions of guests who visit it every year. The jewel in the Czech crown is Prague with its gorgeous and rich architectural styles but the country is also dotted with numerous historical city centers, castles and chateaux. Outside the urban areas, deep woods, rock formations and limestone caves are among the many interesting sites the Czech Republic has to offer.
Since the Czech lands lie exactly on the border of Eastern and Western Europe, the country has come under the influence of several different cultures throughout the course of history. Each of these influences indelibly marked the face of the country with architectural or artistic monuments. This accounts for the uniquely rich cultural heritage of this relatively small country. In addition, the Czech lands are extraordinary in Europe due to the fact that they are practically untouched by the large-scale destruction of war.

Windmills in the Czech Republic
My apologies for mangling words and place names on this page - I dont speak Czech, and have taken the approach of reproducing words without accents, in order to render this page in the English alphabet. In addition, I've sometimes had to guess which word on a page was the town - it's highly likely that I've managed to mis-locate a number of these mills, or have placed them under a heading which is not their actual location. Windmill is rendered in Czech as either "vetrnik", or "vetrny mlyn".
Prague
The white painted cylindrical tower mill now incorporated into Pension Vetrnik was originally built in 1722. The sails and milling machinery were removed around 1899, and the residential wing added as part of the conversion in 1902 by the grandfather of the present owner. During the Communist era, the buildings provided housing for 3 or 4 families. Pictures from 1958 show the accomodation has changed a bit since then, and now the residential wing provides the six guest rooms of the pension. A couple of millstones in the gardens are a reminder of the building's milling heritage. Time Out report
Chvalkovice
This brick built cylindrical tower from 1873 retains a great deal of its internal machinery, though the external appearance of the mill has deteriorated in recent years.

History In the 20th Century The Velvet Revolution A Celtic tribe, the Boii, first settled 300 years before Christ in the land around the Vltava River, which forms the heart of the present-day Czech territory. The Latin term Bohemia (Land of the Boii) became etched in history. The Marcomanni, a Germanic tribe, banished the Boii around 100 B.C., only to be chucked out by the Huns by A.D. 450. The Huns, in turn, were expelled by a Turkic tribe, the Avars, about a century later. Near the turn of the 6th century, Slavs crossed the Carpathian Mountains into Europe, and the westernmost of the Slavic tribes tried to set up a kingdom in Bohemia. The farming Slavs often fell prey to the nomadic Avars, but in 624 a Franconian merchant named Samo united the Slavs and began expelling the Avars from central Europe. Moravian Empire In 863, the Greek brothers Cyril and Methodius arrived in Moravia to preach the Eastern Christian rite to a people who didn't understand them. They created a new language mixing Slavic with a separate script, which came to be known as Cyrillic. When Methodius died in 885, the Moravian rulers reestablished the Latin liturgy, though followers of Cyril and Methodius continued to preach their faith in missions to the east. Ultimately the Slavonic rite took hold in Kiev and Russia, where the Cyrillic alphabet is still used, while western Slavs kept the Latin script and followed Rome.

The Czech Republic offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning because the nation is in an important period of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and privatization of many political, social, educational and cultural institutions. You will gain insight into the complexities of the Czech Republic by directly encountering the problems, challenges and attempted solutions brought about by these changes. Prague
The program is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Located in the heart of Europe on the Vltava River, it has been a center of trade, political life, culture, religion, and learning for over a thousand years. In the medieval and Renaissance periods it played a major role as the central city in historic Bohemia and as the capital for a time of the Holy Roman Empire. The famous reformer, Jan Hus, was rector of Charles University, which hosts the program. In the 20th century, Prague was a focus of resistance to Soviet domination of Central Europe. Today, it is a lively cultural center with dozens of daily concerts (at low or no cost), excellent museums and historic sites including the Prague castle, opera, theater, bookstores and bustling cafes and restaurants. Prague is a living museum of European architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau.

Higher Education.
Education in the Czech Republic is compulsory from the age of 6 to 15. Students then continue by completing a 4-year secondary school ( gymnasium ), a 2 to 4-year vocational school, or apprenticeship training. After completing gymnasium or vocational school, students who wish to attend university must pass the maturita (school-leaving) exam. There are two main types of higher education institutions: private and public. Public institutions are financed by the state budget of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Private foundations can be partially financed by the state. All higher education institutions provide accredited study programs that are assessed by the Accreditation Commission. Entrance requirements for Czech universities are quite strict and very competitive. Applicants must successfully complete discipline-related entrance exams. Bachelor studies ( Bakalar ) usually take three to four years to complete and cover all main disciplines. To finish the academic cycle, students must sit for a final state exam including defense of a Bachelor's thesis. Degrees awarded are either the Bc. (

100. O'Nions, 'Bonafide Or Bogus? : Roma Asylum Seekers From The Czech Republic', [19
By Helen O'Nions, 1999.
http://webjcli.ncl.ac.uk/1999/issue3/onions3.html
Bonafide or Bogus? : Roma Asylum Seekers from the Czech Republic
Helen O'Nions LL.M
Lecturer in Law: University of North London H.Onions@unl.ac.uk First Published in Web Journal of Current Legal Issues in association with Blackstone Press Ltd.
Summary
This article critically evaluates UK asylum policy focusing on the treatment of Roma asylum seekers from the Czech Republic. On arrival in the UK, the Roma were quickly labelled as 'bogus' 'economic migrants''. As an associate member of the European Union, it was not conceivable that any minority in the Czech Republic could be experiencing a well-founded fear of persecution. This paper seeks to question these assumptions. There is much evidence to demonstrate that the Roma are discriminated against throughout Czech society. Racist attacks are common. International criticism has particularly centred on the Czech Citizenship Law of 1993 which removed the citizenship rights of several thousand Roma. The EU has been monitoring the integration process with respect to the Roma and their most recent report recognises that the situation has not improved. Given that the evidence shows that many Czech Roma are experiencing violence and discrimination, their treatment on arrival in the UK is cause for great concern. Many applicants were detained; those that did not apply for asylum immediately on arrival were refused income support; and visa requirements were introduced to dissuade future applicants. The Geneva Convention, which requires each case to be considered on its merits, appears to have been routinely disregarded in the judgement of asylum claims. Furthermore, it is argued that the spirit of the Convention is seriously undermined by European developments to synchronise the asylum process.
