The constituent Czech and Slovak republics received autonomy over local affairs, with the federal government responsible for foreign relations, defense, and finance. The Communist regime collapsed in 1989, and in 1990 economic reforms were begun that were especially disruptive in Slovakia, which had a disproportionate share of subsidized state-owned heavy industry. A strong secessionist movement in Slovakia led to a declaration in 1992 that the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic would separate into independent states. In response to the imminent breakup of Czechoslovakia, a new Czech constitution was written. It was implemented with the birth of the new Czech Republic on Jan. 1, 1993. History: 1948 - 1989 Back to: History By the mid-1960s the Czech lands, which had inherited most of the wealth of Autria-Hungary, had a standard of living much lower than that of neighbouring Austria, a country with virtually no natural resources and little industry. Social and political pressures for reform could not be contained, and with the appointment of Alexander Dubcek, as First Secretary of the Communist Party in early 1968, the "Prague Spring" began. "Socialism with a human face" became the declared aim of the government, and for a while the nation united enthusiastically behind the regime. Brezhnev’s Soviet Union and its allies feared that the Czechoslovak Communist Party would be unable to contain the pressures for real change. While Czechs and Slovaks made the most of their first taste of freedom for 20 years, publishing pamphlets, founding political parties or simply crossing the border for a long forbidden summer holiday, the Russians sent troops into Czechoslovakia for a long drawn out "summer manoeuvres". Back to Normal Mr. Dubcek was shunted aside, first as Ambassador to Turkey, when as a non-person, forced to live and work in obscurity as a clerk in the Forestry Commission in Bratislava. All forms of dissidence were ruthlessly stamped out by administrative measures such as dismissal from work or the exclusion of children from higher education.

    How it all began
The first inhabitants of the Czech lands were prehistoric fish. That's because the country, at the time, was covered by a prehistoric ocean - thanks to which it is possible to find some very nice fossils of trilobytes in the Czech Republic today. Today's Czech Republic was later populated by dinosaurs of all sorts, and later by neanderthals and even by mammoths. The prehistoric settlement of the present-day Czech Republic by people culminated in the fourth century B.C. with the arrival of the Celts, the first modern human inhabitants of this territory that we know of. In fact, the Latin name for the Czech lands, "Boiohaemum" (Bohemia), is derived from the name of the Boii Celtic tribe; and the Czech name for the Moldau River (which flows through the capital city of Prague) is Vltava - which is said to come from the Celtic "Vlt" meaning wild, and "Va" meaning water. The Czech Celts were in part chased out of the region and in part assimilated by the next peoples to inhabit the area: the Germanic Marcomanni and Quadi tribes from the west and the Romans from the south. (The Romans didn't actually occupy Czech territory - they only got as far north as the Danube River, which flows from Germany - through Austria along its border with Slovakia - and then over to Hungary before continuing on to Yugoslavia, and so just misses the Czech lands.) During the Migration of Peoples - roughly from the 3d to the 7th centuries AD - Slav colonization spread westward from the Steppes of the East (probably from Panonia) all the way to the territory of the present-day Czech Republic and up to Poland and down again to Yugoslavia. From probably the sixth century AD on, the Slavic peoples settled, in several waves of migration, into the regions which had been conveniently abandoned by the Germanic tribes.

    HISTORY

The Czech Republic was the western part of the Czech and Slovak Federal
Republic. Formed into a common state after World War I (October 18,
1918), the Czechs, Moravians, and Slovaks remained united for more than
75 years. On January 1, 1993, the two republics split to form two
separate states. The Czechs lost their national independence to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1620 at the Battle of White Mountain and, for the next 300 years, were ruled by the Austrian Monarchy. With the collapse of the monarchy at the end of World War I, the independent country of Czechoslovakia was formed, encouraged by, among others, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Despite cultural differences, the Slovaks shared with the Czechs similar aspirations for independence from the Hapsburg state and voluntarily united with the Czechs. The Slovaks were not at the same level of economic and technological development as the Czechs, but the freedom

Founded in 1918, it united within its political framework the Jewries of the "historic countries" (Bohemia, Moravia, and part of Silesia), connected with the Hapsburg Empire from 1526 and under its direct control from 1620, and of Slovakia and Carpatho-Russia, an integral part of Hungary, from the tenth century. As of January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia ceased to exist as a separate entity and its territory became two independent nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Jewish communities of the various regions hence differed substantially in their demographic, economic, and cultural aspects, with influences of assimilation to the Czech and German cultures prevailing in the west, and the Hungarian in conjunction with the traditional Orthodox Jewish way of life in the east. top
    Demographic Structure
In the western part of Czechoslovakia Jewish life was mainly regulated by Austrian legislation (of 1890) and in the eastern areas by Hungarian (of 1870). The communal leadership was initially predominantly assimilationist-oriented to German, Hungarian, or Czech culture.

  • Celts In ancient times the Celts were a number of interrelated peoples in central Europe sharing many cultural and linguistic traits indicative of a common origin. Today, "Celtic" is often used in to describe the people and their respective cultures and languages of several ethnic groups in the British Isles, the French region of Bretagne and the Spanish region of Galicia who also share many of the same common traits in their cultures and languages as the original Celts but who in ancient times were not necessarily considered related to them by outsiders (tribes or nations from mainland Celtic regions, such as Gaul and Belgium, are known to have moved into the British Isles, such as the Atrebates, Menapii, and Parisi, however, and contributed to the make up of those peoples).

The Great Moravian Empire and the Pøemyslid Dynasty Some of the oldest settlers of the Czech lands were the Boii, a Celtic tribe that inhabited the region from around the 4th century BC and who gave Bohemia its name. The Celts were later replaced by Germanic tribes, and around the 6th century AD, the Slavs finally reached the territory from the east. In the 7th century, a Frankish merchant Sámo succeeded in uniting the Slavic tribes under his empire and defeating the tribe of the Avars that occupied today's Hungary.
