The Foreign Study Program in Prague
The department has an foreign study program (FSP) that takes students to Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. The FSP runs every spring and has a maximum enrollment of 16. Professor Benjamin Forest will lead the program in 2004 and again in 2006. Professors Frank Magilligan and Mona Domosh will be co-directors in 2005. The FSP forges strong links with the Geography Faculty at Charles University in Prague, whose members teach two courses for the program. The first, Geography 47, covers changes to the regional geography of the Czech Republic as it integrates with Europe. For Geography 81, the Charles University faculty lead students on a set of field trips throughout Prague, the Czech Republic, and adjacent countries. The third course, Geography 82, consists of independent field research under the direction of the Dartmouth program director. Dartmouth faculty are responsible for all course evaluations and assign all grades. Prague is one of the most intriguing cities in the world today in a country undergoing profound social and economic transition. Prague contains architecture from the early 12th to the late 20th century. The main urban plan for what is now the city center was set in place by Charles IV in the late 1300's. The off campus program spends a majority of the time in Prague (based at the venerable Charles University), but also involves trips all over Bohemia and Moravia (the two main culture regions of the Czech Republic) as well as field trips to Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and Austria.

    Czech Republic
The Department of Geography field excursion visited Prague and the Czech Republic during the midterm break, the group being led by Drs Parker, Brady, Mills and Mendel and Ms Susan Hegarty. The focus of the excursion was urban and environmental issues in the newly liberalising economy. Housing and retailing developments were examined in Prague. Environmental issues were highlighted particularly in a tour (above) of one of the largest open-cast brown coal mines in the former central and eastern Europe, a mine which necessitated the relocation and the rebuilding of the town of Most. The historical development of a number of urban areas was also studied, including a day in Vienna, drawing comparisons between two Hapsburg capital cities. More recent aspects of Czech history included a visit to Terezin WWII concentration camp, and the remnants of the Iron Curtain on the Austrian border.
