The Czech Republic offers a fascinating social and cultural setting for service-learning because the nation is in an important period of transition from Soviet Communism to independence and privatization of many political, social, educational and cultural institutions. You will gain insight into the complexities of the Czech Republic by directly encountering the problems, challenges and attempted solutions brought about by these changes. Prague
The program is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Located in the heart of Europe on the Vltava River, it has been a center of trade, political life, culture, religion, and learning for over a thousand years. In the medieval and Renaissance periods it played a major role as the central city in historic Bohemia and as the capital for a time of the Holy Roman Empire. The famous reformer, Jan Hus, was rector of Charles University, which hosts the program. In the 20th century, Prague was a focus of resistance to Soviet domination of Central Europe. Today, it is a lively cultural center with dozens of daily concerts (at low or no cost), excellent museums and historic sites including the Prague castle, opera, theater, bookstores and bustling cafes and restaurants. Prague is a living museum of European architecture, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau.

REMARKABLY OBSERVANT, AMERICAN WAY

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I had a good laugh, I learned something
about myself (after twenty five years out of Prague, in Africa) and I
also realised how difficult it is for a non-European to appreciate
complexities of a small nation which lived for more than forty years
under communism. The book is amusing, open-mined, tolerant and kind. It generally assesses well the character of the Czech nation. Where it hits shallow ground are the issues related to life under communism: incorect or insignificant problems like limited shopping opprotunities, non-availaibility of goods, banning of western music overshadow the real issues of the evil of communism: its grip on people's life, its control of persons' destiny. And what really jabbed

International Religious Freedom Report
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report, and government policy continued to contribute to the generally free practice of religion. The generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom issues with the Government in the context of its overall dialog and policy of promoting human rights. Section I. Religious Demography The country has a total area of 30,379 square miles and its population is an estimated 10.3 million. The country has a largely homogenous population with a dominant Christian tradition. However, largely as a result of 40 years of Communist rule between 1948 and 1989, the vast majority of the citizens do not identify themselves as members of any organized religion. In a February 2001 opinion poll, 38 percent of respondents claimed to believe in God, while 52 percent identified themselves as atheists. Nearly half of those responding agreed that churches were beneficial to society. There was a revival of interest in religion after the 1989 "Velvet Revolution;" however, the number of those professing religious beliefs or participating in organized religion has fallen steadily since then in almost every region of the country.

T H E C Z E C H R E P U B L I C 0. INTRODUCTION The Czech Republic lies in Central Europe. It has 10.3 million inhabitants (mid-1996), mostly of Czech nationality. The minorities, mainly Slovak, Polish, and German, account for about 5 per cent of the population. The official language is Czech, a West Slavonic language. Being a former Eastern Bloc country, most of the people in the Czech Republic are atheists. The breakdown of the religions is as follows: atheists (40 per cent), Roman Catholic (39 per cent), Protestant (5 per cent), Orthodox (3 per cent), other (13 per cent). Like the other countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic has also experienced a number of major changes after the 'velvet revolution'. As an independent state, it appeared on the world scene on 1 January 1993 after the division of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. In its democratic development it consistently follows the traditions of Czechoslovakia from the 1918 - 1938 period. 1. GENERAL DIRECTIONS OF CULTURAL POLICY In addition to changing the previous system of national economic planning, the recent political and economic changes, have also reflected in the field of culture, as well as in the structure of responsible bodies and institutions. The Constitution of the Czech Republic guarantees extensive rights and liberties, including the rights and liberties of national minorities.

    Introduction
You can read two essays on feminism in the Czech Republic:
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism Why Western Feminism Isn't Working in the Czech Republic
  • The Viscitudes of Czech Feminism
    by
For somebody observing the situation from outside the country, the history of Czech feminism may seem to be limited to the era after the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent implementation of various Western discourses in the sociocultural milieu of the new democracy. Before 1989, the word "feminism" was almost never used to designate any phenomenon present in Czechoslovakia, it referred to Western ideology which was presented as not applicable to the situation of Czech women'. But this fact is only a question of naming, and even without using the word "feminism", Czech lands have a long tradition of dealing with women's issues, especially in the sphere of education. If we turn to the real historiography, we can see that women participated very actively in major events throughout the history of Czech lands, but there are especially two major historical periods that should not escape our attention, because they provide token examples of the position of women in society at the time: the Hussites movement and the Czech National Revival. The Hussites movement is famous for its emphasis on equality and the demand that the Bible should be available in the language of the people (at the time when all Masses were in Latin) and that everyone be educated to read and understand the Word, which addressed both men and women. Their ideals of equality attracted an enormous number of people, without a radical separation of the two sexes. As the Hussites period has always been considered one of the most important events in Czech history, so, many times, the necessity of education for both sexes was taken for granted as vital for the good of the nation(3).

Country profile
I. Snapshot of the Czech Republic This landlocked country, nestled in between Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany, has long played a pivotal role in the history of Central Europe. Its location and history have formed the national character and culture, which have both Germanic and Slavic elements.
Prague, the capital, has through the centuries acquired an unrivalled richness of architectural treasures which have earned a place on UNESCO's world culture heritage list. The romanesque, gothic, renaissance, baroque and art nouveau styles form a unique aesthetic blend. In this way the city represents well the successive phases of Czech history; as a capital of the Holy Roman Empire, as an important cultural centre of the Habsburg Empire and, in the first half of the twentieth century, as the capital of an independent and democratic republic between the two world wars.

2) SUMMARY
In its Opinion of July 1997 , the European Commission concluded that the Czech Republic would have to make a major effort to adapt both the regulatory framework and industry structures if it was to meet EC requirements in the audiovisual sector in the medium term.
The November 1998 Report endorsed this assessment and noted the lack of progress in this area.
The October 1999 Report recorded no major change and stated that no legislative progress had been made in the audiovisual sector.
