It is fitting that the archaeologist who first deciphered the Sumerian tablets containing this information was a Czech, Bedrich Hrozny. Beer was also brewed in the earliest Czech civilizations (there is evidence that hops were already being cultivated here in 859 and were being exported in 903 - the first written documentation referring to brewing dates from 1088), and even British beer authority Michael Jackson agrees that the Czechs are the number one beer-brewing nation in the world today. v
v The city of Prague has awakened from a 40- year slumber behind the Iron Curtain. As if untouched by time, Lexia students can explore this 1,000 year-old capital just as it looked when Mozart, Kafka, Einstein and other members of the cultural and intellectual elite of Bohemia were drawn to the cafes, theaters, salons and studios that flourished among its elegant cobblestoned streets and gothic spires. But Prague today has also changed. After years under communist rule, the country's rapid transition to democratic capitalism has created some difficulties, including indifference to business corruption and exacerbated ethnic divisions, particularly between Czechs and the Roma, or Gypsies. In Prague, Lexia students have an opportunity to explore both the old and the new: the creative legacies of Bohemian society, the stagnation of communist culture, and the turbulent effects of democratic reform. Affiliated Institution:
Charles University

Lexia has been associated with Charles University since 1991. Founded in 1348, Charles University is Eastern Europe's oldest and most prestigious institution of higher learning, enrolling over 25,000 students a year. The faculty of the Lexia program is comprised primarily of Czech professors from Charles University. The faculty also serves as advisors for the Field Research Projects and offers a link to local Czech students. Lectures are also given by professors from other universities and speakers from industry and the government sector. Beyond the Nation-State:

Czech Republic History and Culture
History Czechoslovakia was established in 1918 as a national state of the Czechs and Slovaks. Although these two peoples were closely related, they had undergone different historical experiences. Despite their separate strands of development, both Czechs and Slovaks struggled against a powerful neighbor that threatened their very existence. The unity of the Czech and Slovak people in the Great Moravian Empire was brief. From the beginning of the tenth century and for almost a millennium, the two peoples followed separate courses.
