Czech Republic The Czech Republic is still all things to all people. From the pulsing capital Prague to the back-in-time villages of Moravia, from toiling up mountains to lounging in spas, from the world-famous Pilsner to the strains of Smetana and Dvoř¡k, there's an experience to suit every taste. Stunning architecture is not limited to Prague - there are plenty of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades in other towns. Among the richest are Kutn¡ Hora in Central Bohemia; Cheb, Loket and Domažlice in western Bohemia; Olomouc in northern Moravia; and Tel  and KromªÅ™Å¾ in southern Moravia. Cyclists will appreciate the undulating Bohemian plateau, drained by the Vltava, the republic's longest river, and its parent river, the Labe, and dotted with castles and modest villages. A natural pathway through Moravia is the 'Moravian Gate', the linked valleys of the Morava, Be va and Odra rivers, the only lowland corridor across the Czech Republic. Though this is the most densely populated part of the republic, the hills to both sides offer some of its most peaceful travelling. Full country name: Czech Republic Area: 78,866 sq km

Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is a small country in the heart of Europe, which has an appeal for visitors.
Thanks to its location at the crossroads of various cultures, the Czech Republic has countless cultural and historical points of interest. Despite the complicated visa rules, these destinations attracted a relatively high number of foreign tourists even before the velvet revolution.
The country only recently returned to the economic and political freedom of a democratic system.
The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republik were founded on 1.1.1993 after the division of Czechoslovakia.
The country is situated in the middle of Europe and is the hub of several major areas including Western and Eastern Europe, the Balcans and Scandinavia. The Czech Republic also shares the longest border with the strongest economical power in Europe, the Federal Republic of Germany. The physical land area puts into a category of smaller countries. In size order, it falls into the 21st place, following Hungary, Portugal and Austria, ahead of Ireland, Lithuania and Latvia. The number of inhabitants places the total population of the Czech Republic 14th in Europe after Hungary, Portugal and Belorussia, ahead of Greece and Belgium.
Aside from the Czechs: Moravians, Silesians, Slovaks, Germans, Polish, Roms and other nationalities also inhabit the culturally diverse country.

Prince Charles of Wales Czechoslovakia's main cultural achievements took place primarily in the Middle Ages and after the 18th century. In the intervening three centuries, control by Germans resulted in the suppression of native achievement and forced many artists, musicians, and philosophers to live abroad. The 14th century laid the basis for a national style in painting. The 19th century witnessed a revival and further development of painting, music, and sculpture. The National Theatre in Prague (1883) and the Bratislava National Theatre are also held in high regard throughout Europe. The 1960's saw a return to prominence of Czechoslovakian films. "The Shop on Main Street", (1966), and "Loves of a Blonde" (1967), won general acclaim in the West. Traditional painting in Czechoslovakia during the 19th century was best exemplified by the works of Josef Mánes. The portrait painter Max vabinský and the sculptor Josef Myslebeck gained recognition around the turn of the 20th century. Josef Drahovský, who sculpted in various media, including glass, achieved prominence after World War I. Later in the 20th century Franticek Kupka achieved a posthumous reputation as one of the pioneers of abstract painting. Czech contribution to music has been of notable international importance. The composer Bedrich Smetana is known as the father of Bohemian national music; Antonín Dvorák, who was born in Czechoslovakia, lived and worked in the United States for several years; Leos Janácek is noted for his operas and songs, some of which were based on folk themes.

The Cultural Section
The cultural section of the Embassy deals with cultural and educational affairs. We try to show British people the very best the Czech Republic has to offer in this area and arouse their interest in Czech culture, history and traditions.
Culture
Most of the work in terms of larger cultural events is carried out by the Czech Centre in London which has corresponding facilities. However, the Embassy is the guardian of cultural exchanges including exhibitions, concerts, book launches, readings or lectures by prominent Czech/British personalities. We also advise in individual cases providing contacts and links to Czech institutions or personal meetings for those taking interest in specific topics.
Education
Major part of the routine work in this field is devoted to encouraging relations among universities and other types of schools with special regard to the study of the Czech language, literature and history at British universities. We also provide information and opportunities for British students to take part in the Summer School of Slavonic Studies courses in the Czech Republic each year. Most student exchanges, however, are organized directly by the universities themselves.

A. CULTURE       Statistics presented in this Chapter refer to the activities of theatres, cinemas, musical ensembles, libraries, museums, galleries, observatories, planetariums, and the press, and are acquired from departmental statistical reports of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and other information sources. Included in this Chapter are also figures on zoos reported by the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoological Gardens and on caves reported by the Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape Protection. The figures on university libraries are taken over from documents prepared by the Institute for Information on Education.       The State Statistical Service also uses outputs from departmental statistical information systems, which are processed by the Information and Advisory Centre for Local Culture, Prague. The tabular figures are either related to the end of year (e.g., numbers of theatres, cinemas, libraries, galleries) or they are annual aggregates (e.g., number of performances, attendance, published books). Data on radio and television broadcasting are collected by state statistical questionnaires.       Data on state establishments also include data on establishments of municipalities and regions.

Development of Political Culture in the Czech Republic
Emanuel Pecka Emanuel Pecka: Professor of Political Science at University of Economics in Prague. He is the author of works dealing with problems of sociology of politics (Theory of Elites in the U.S.A., American Political Science and Sociology of Politics, Scientific Revolution and Education, Foundations of Sociology of Politics). He recieved his PhD in sociology at Charles University. Abstract: This study focuses on two questions: What are the roots and what are the main features of political culture in the Czech Republic. It stresses the relations between the historical types of social structures and political culture. This paper presents some examples, from empirical research, of political culture 1968-1970, and at the same time some remarks on the right-left division line. In a great number of books and articles devoted to political culture we read that the term "political culture" cannot be defined precisely. On the other hand the same authors find this term useful as a general description of ways of behaving in political culture as not only a term suitable for analysing civic behaviour in the political area. At the same time it includes the real behaviour, the distinctive customs, skills and attitudes, that individuals learn as the shared experience of their political system. These remarks lead us to the following questions: 1. What are the roots of our political culture? 2. What are the main features of political culture in CR? The explanation of development of political culture must be based upon the inquiry of democratic traditions of politics in our country. The democratic state in our territory rose in 1918 as the result of the long-term efforts of Czech politicians. Their activity had its rorigins largely in the ideas of nineteenth century thinkers such as J. Dobrovsky, J. Jungmann, J. Kollar, but above all of F. Palacky. T. G. Masaryk very often cited Palacky's words saying that states develop themselves in spirit of ideas which stood at their birth. The new Czech state introduced democratic parliamentary and human rights into Central Europe. People in the Czechoslovak Republic realized it and many of them were proud of this value; from here love of native country and nationalism.

President of the Czech Republic
Curriculum vitae
Vaclav Havel is one of the best known citizens of the Czech Republic. He became famous as Velvet Revolution , and in December 1989 he was elected President of the Czechoslovakia and later on of the Czech Republic. He was awarded numerous international prizes and honorary doctorates Vaclav Havel was born in Prague on October 5, 1936. In 1951 he completed his compulsory schooling. Being the offspring of a prominent Praguebusinessmen's family, he was barred from pursuing regular studies afterwards. For fouryears, while taking an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory technician, he was attendingevening classes at a grammar school. It was at the age of nineteen that he started publishing studies and articles in literary and theater magazines. Family tradition hasled him toward embracing the humanist values of Czech culture that were suppressed or destroyedin the 1950s. As he was not allowed, due to his family background, to study humanities,he went on to a Technical University where he spent two years. After completing his military service, he worked as a stagehandat the ABC Theater and later, from 1960, in the Theater on the Balustrade. The lattertheater produced his first plays, most importantly The Garden Party (1963), a piece representing in an outstanding manner the strong regeneration tendencies prevailing in Czech culture and Czech society in the 1960s which culminated in the so-called Prague Spring of 1968. At that time Vaclav Havel was taking part in public and cultural life as one of the standard-bearersof the democratic concepts of Czech culture and society. In thesecond half of the 1960s his next plays, The Memorandum (1965) and The Increased Difficulty of Concentration (1968), were performed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I had a good laugh, I learned something
about myself (after twenty five years out of Prague, in Africa) and I also realised how difficult it is for a non-European to appreciate complexities of a small nation which lived for more than forty years under communism. The book is amusing, open-mined, tolerant and kind. It generally assesses well the character of the Czech nation. Where it hits shallow ground are the issues related to life under communism: incorect or insignificant problems like limited shopping opprotunities, non-availaibility of goods, banning of western

Flag of Czech Republic Background:
After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution."
On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Now a member of NATO, the Czech Republic has moved toward integration in world markets, a development that poses both opportunities and risks.
