Overview
The Czech program at UNL is one of eight regularly offered Czech language programs in the entire United States and has been offered at UNL since 1907. History
Czech language instruction at UNL started in 1907. The first instructor was the poet Jeffrey Hrbek, who was succeeded by his sister, Dr. Sarka Hrbkova. After Dr. Hrbkova went to New York to work for the International Red Cross, Professor Stepanek took over until the mid-1950s. Dr. Vladimir Kucera, the next professor of Czech, is remembered for his organizational skills; he helped bring about Czech festivals in Nebraska.
At present, Czech language is offered in a joint format by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and by the Division of Continuing Studies. Courses

What could be more enjoyable than learning the idiom of another culture, and then to travel to that land and be able to speak and communicate in the native tongue. You will experience the joy of understanding, and the appreciation of the people who you meet, as they thank you for taking the time and patience to understand their way of thinking and their life. Browse through our considerable resources and pick out the products which are most suited to your needs and budget. We offer all levels. Go at your own pace. It's easy and fun. To take advantage of these materials, set aside a definite time to study each week, and then stick to it faithfully. It’s best to study at least three times per week, and at least one hour each time. Don’t’ forget to do memorization exercises each time for at least 20 minutes. Make your own flash cards and carry them with you wherever you go. Put 3 or 4 foreign words on one side and the English equivalents on the other. If you’re going on a trip, take the flashcards with you. Try to progress at your own pace. Listen to the same words and phrases over and over again, so you can pick up the correct pronunciation. Don’t forget to concentrate on grammar, which is the way a sentence is structure. Most grammar is pretty simple. Once you understand it, everything else seems to fall into place. The two most important verbs are "go" and "want". It's amazing how many sentences you can form just using those verbs. So practice a thousand variations of those verbs in a sentence. Always start with the present tense. Once you feel comfortable with that, then move to the past tense and then finally use the future tense. With three tenses under your belt, you can hold an advanced beginner conversation and consider yourself "fluent". At least in your own mind. After that, the world just seems to open up.

Slavonic group
The Czech language is counted among Slavonic languages.
    This family contains:
  • west-Slavonic group (e.g. Czech, Serbian, Polish, Slovak)
  • east-Slavonic languages (e.g. Russian, Ukrainian)
  • south-Slavonic group (e.g. Bulgarian)
The Slavonic languages are relative from historical aspect so they have the lingual conformity to the others. The Slavs were originally settled on the territory north of the Slovak-Polish frontier. They lived together and spoke one language - "primitive Slavonic". During the migration of nations (the end of 5th century) Slavs came to the new territories. Mutual relations were broken and lingual differences have been intensified.
Lingual development
Pre-conditions for the evolution of Czech as independent formation among other Slavonic languages arose from the second half of 9th century. The fast lingual development became evident e.g. in domain of sounds:
  • There was the changes in softness of sounds (about 14th century)

The period of Old Czech, the oldest stage of the language, is usually placed in the 11th to 14th cent. At that time there were many dialects. A Czech literature began to take shape in the 13th cent. Standardization of the spelling and pronunciation of the language occurred during the Middle Czech period of the 15th and 16th cents., largely as a result of the work of John Huss , the celebrated Czech religious reformer, who made the Prague dialect the basis of his far-reaching linguistic reforms. The modern period of Czech began in the 17th cent. The domination of the Czechs by the Hapsburg rulers of Austria from 1620 to 1918 seriously hampered the development of the Czech language and literature, although a national literary revival began in the 18th cent. After independence was regained in 1918, the language and literature of Czechoslovakia again began to flourish. Czech was one of two official languages (the other being Slovak) of Czechoslovakia, and remained the official language of the Czech Republic after Czechoslovakia was dissolved in 1993. A modified version of the Roman alphabet is used for writing Czech.

Czech is a Western Slavonic language spoken by about 12 million people in the Czech Republic. There are also many people of Czech origin in other countries, particularly the USA. Czech is closely related to Slovak Polish , and Sorbian. The region where Czech is spoken is traditionally called Bohemia and was named after the Boii tribe who, according to Roman sources, have inhabited the area since at least the 1st century AD. The dialects spoken in Moravia are also considered forms of Czech. The most prominent writer during the early period of Czech literature was Jan Hus (1369-1415), a religious reformer who also reformed Czech spelling. He created the system of having one grapheme (letter) for every phoneme (sound) in the language by adding accents to some of the letters. As a result, written Czech looks very different to written Polish. For example, in Czech the sound ch, as in church, is written , but the same sound is written cz in Polish.

Is there a list that you would like included, send me an email and I'll see what I can do. When learning a new language, adding to your vocabulary is very important. Many websites focus on grammer, sentence structure, or maybe verb tenses, but not just on vocabulary. Mgert is all about vocabulary. In fact, Mgert will add a new vocabulary list each week, separated into topical categories such as animals, body parts, or the weather. The word lists will also be cross-referenced into as many languages as possible. Start by choosing your language to the right. Then, choose the language that you wish to learn. Just think, by concentrating on just ten words a week, you'll know over 500 new words in just a year, not counting all the other words you learn from different sources. Thank you and enjoy!
