NOTES ON THE CZECH LANGUAGE Czech is a member of a group of Slavic languages comprised of Slovak, Polish, Russian, Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian. It uses the same alphabet letters as English as opposed to the Russian and Serbo-Croatian Cyrillic type. While English uses an alphabet of 26 letters, Czech has 40, the same A to Z with the addition of sound altering marks above the additional 14. There are approximately 11 million Czech speakers in the Czech Republic, a country slightly smaller than New York State. The two areas of the Czech Republic are Bohemia, with its principal city, the country's capital, Prague, and Moravia with its principal city, Brno. The easy part of learning Czech is that each letter of the alphabet represents one single sound and is pronounced phonetically. For example, the English letter "a" has different sounds in different English words such as:

The Czech Language Programme at Bristol
Czech language is taught at ab initio, intermediate and advanced levels by a qualified native Czech teacher. Teaching is conducted mainly in Czech and you are encouraged to use Czech in class as much as possible.
In the First Year , you are introduced to the basics of Czech grammar for active and passive use. Classes focus on the development of oral, aural, reading and translating skills. The Department has now created a resources centre for self-study, including a class library of set texts and recent Czech magazines, and will soon include an archive of language and cultural studies materials for all levels.
In the Second Year , the emphasis is on improving your ability to express yourself in spoken and written Czech. Classes focus on more complex areas of grammar, on vocabulary-building, translation, oral presentation and writing skills. In preparation for time spent in the Czech Republic, the course is divided into themes reflecting aspects of contemporary Czech life, agreed at the outset by teacher and students.
The Third Year is spent abroad on a Socrates programme at Brno University or in another study or work placement in the Czech Republic approved by the Department.

    • Karel Hynek Mácha: Máj
    RUSS 10026
This year-long unit, co-taught by native and non-native Czech teachers, aims (a) to develop students' abilities to read the contemporary Czech media for comprehension purposes, (b) to introduce students to some key aspects of Czech society since the fall of Communism from the perspective of both English- and Czech-language materials, and (c) to foster students' ability to find and synthesise information to produce a structured analysis of one of these aspects.
