Czech Garden
This is a bouquet of the herbs Czechs use frequently in their cooking Allspice, Caraway, Garlic, Marjoram, Paprika, Parsley, Thyme and Vanilla and are essential in defining their cuisine. Pork with Bread Dumplings Houskové Knedlíky , Carp, Potato Pancakes, Goulash, Potato Salad, Hot Sausages including Párky , Green Beans Paprika, Christmas Cake Vanoka , Beer and Plum Brandy Slivovice can be found on most tables from the simple home to the palace in Prague. Bay, Celery, Chives, Cloves, Cinnamon, Dill, Ginger, Green and Red Pepper, Juniper, Leeks, Mace, Mustard, Nutmeg, Onion, Pepper and Poppy complete their herb garden.
The Czech Republic has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Celts, Slavs, Moravians, Bohemians, Slovaks, Poles, Austrians, Hungarians, Germans and Russians have all influenced their cuisine. The Catholic Church dominated in the 14th century, when Charles IV was not only King of Bohemia but also Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Today, while meat dishes are most often the centerpiece of Czech meals, a variety of delicious soups, salads, dumplings, vegetables, and desserts are also popular. Although similar to many Eastern European cuisines, Czech cooking is unique and distinguished primarily by its use of dumplings both savory and sweet at most meals. It is a cuisine at once practical and yet elegant.

Book Reviews All Editions Email this comparison Add this comparison to your site Reviews for The Best of Czech Cooking Average customer rating: Top customer reviews: The major handicap of this book is the almost complete lack of pork dishes, so typical and essential in Bohemian and Moravian cooking. More or less authentic Czech sausages and hams may be hard to come by in the US, but is there a shortage of pork meat? So, the book misses a major part of the better dishes that Czech cooking has to offer. I would advise the editors of Hippocrene Books to check the subjects in their publications a little bit more carefully. See more reviews on our selected book reviews sites.

Dining in Prague:
Cafes and Restaurants
Here, please find several names of several restaurants; you have the choice in Prague ! Of course, here is just a selection and I’m sure you will discover much more ! I know many of them and I think that’s really a good selection of nice restaurants.
Prices
The prices don't necessarily relate to atmosphere or the quality of the food. It is possible to have an excellent dinner in a mid-range restaurant, on the other hand it is easy to pay a relatively high price for an average meal close to a tourist site. If you have ordered from a menu without prices, ask beforehand how much the dishes will cost. When weights (100 or 150 g) are given for fish or meat, the price quoted is for that weight. If the item served weights two or three times more than the cost will be much higher. Tipping is not mandatory, but it's general practice to round up the bill to a reasonable amount or tip ten per cent (unless the service was awful).
Czech Restaurants
U Cizku Karlovo namesti 34 Prague 2 Tel : 22 23 22 57 Once a famous beer cellar (and still serving good beer), this is good venue to sample well cooked and presented Czech food at very reasonable prices. As a result there do tend to be a few coach parties around.

Elections in the Czech Republic
Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus's Civic Democratic Party (ODS) lost ground in the Czech parliament last weekend, as voters scattered their votes among six political parties. The reformist, center-right ODS did finish first, winning just over 29 percent of the votes and 68 seats in the lower house. In second place was the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD), with 61 seats. The most notable gain was made by the ultra-right Czech Republican Party (SPR-RSC), led by the brashly outspoken Miroslav Sladek. The SPR-RSC finished in a tie for fourth position in the parliament with 18 seats. With the parliamentary delegation fragmented and the two largest parties divided on numerous political issues, it may be difficult for Klaus or anyone to forge a coalition government. Reports and analysis of current political news from the Czech Republic are regularly available from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty online, a site rated 2 stars by McKinley's Magellan Internet Guide . Customer Reviews I am of 100% Czech heritage and have many authentic recipes. This book uses ingredients not readily found. Especially the pastry recipes do not use flours, etc. found in most kitchens. There are better recipes geared to todays methods and ingredients. Mace and nutmeg were commonly used and are not in these recipes.I was generally disappointed in the content and referances to basic mixtures and adaptations. There were a few appealing recipes, but the majority were not for todays cook. This book is neat, but I'm not sure how much cooking I'll be doing. Brains, tounge and other such body parts are included. :) Maybe the dessert section is a little safer. Still it's a great book with the names of food in czech. The menu features the likes of homemade pasta, fresh fish and a dailyspecial that puts a deluxe spin on traditional czech cooking.
http://www.caledonianschool.com/jobs/handbook/handbook3.en.html
What to eat ?
Czech cuisine is quite heavy. Lots of meat (usually pork or beef) served with dumplings, potatoes or rice, in a sauce. Traditional Czech food is pork with dumplings and sauerkraut (veprove, knedliky a zeli), served always with a glass of beer. The traditional starter is hot soup. The national Czech dish is roast pork, sauerkraut and dumplings. Another speciality is goulash, often served with dumplings. The main meal of the day is eaten around noon. It usually consists of meat and dumplings, potatoes or rice, and soup. In addition to a simple breakfast and evening meal, Czechs enjoy a snack (svacina) at about 10 am. Tea is the most common beverage.
However, Czech beer is famous worldwide. The best-known brands are Pilsner (Plzenske) and Budweiser (Budvar), but just as good are Radegast, Staropramen and Velkopopovicky Kozel. The favorite aperitif is Becherovka, a Czech-invented liqueur, potently herbal and touted as having medicinal qualities. Plum brandy (slivovice) is popular.
Meats and yeast-dumplings dominate the national lunch table. The traditional Czech dish is knedlo, zelo, vepro (roast pork served with sauerkraut and dumplings). Anotherclassic dishes are svickova na smetane (sliced beef sirloin

A Czech Bounces Back
No distance seems too far to find food from Bohemia
At The Little Prague Bakery and Deli, Maria Makovicka serves her sassy poppyseed strudel on traditional Czech china. I HAVE A recurrent dream in which I walk for miles in search of the Czech food of my grandmother, of my childhood. Christmas dinners of roast duck, dumplings with gravy, sauerkraut, creamy Bohemian Pilsners and the inevitable Vanocka, a sweet Czech Christmas bread. Forever thwarted, I wake up feeling an aching emptiness. I left my native Chicago 20 years ago, trading the good, solid, central-European peasant food of my boyhood for Seattle's salmon and Pacific Asian delights. An exchange that shines less bright as my memory grows more sentimental with age. Many catalysts drive us to journey great distances, and food is perhaps the least acknowledged. Yet I think more expeditions have been launched, miles covered and discoveries made in quest of something good to eat than for politics, love or glory. Need proof? We remember Marco Polo for bringing back spaghetti but not much else. Witness the odyssey of a loaf of that Czech Christmas bread called Vanocka (say "Vanoshka").
