The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation is Cyprus' public broadcasting service, transmitting island-wide on three radio and two television channels.
The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation is a non-profit organization that utilises its entire income for the promotion of its main mission: the objective provision of information, culture and entertainment for the people of Cyprus.
The CyBC began life in 1953 as the Cyprus Broadcasting Service transmitting on one radio channel. It began television broadcasts three years later and became a Corporation in 1960 when the island gained independence from Britain.
The first TV programme in Cyprus was transmitted during the British Colonial Era, in October 1957, when the station was known as the “Cyprus Radio Service”. During this period, its output was limited to a three-hour transmission, twice a week.
Én 1959 Cyprus Broadcasting Service changed its name to Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and since then functions as a semi-governmental organisation. At the beginning of the island’s independence, CyBC television served the objectives and needs of the newly-founded member state of the United Nations. The history of CyBC television reflects the struggle of the Republic of Cyprus and its people.

BACK NEXT History Independence Invasion ... Referendum History Cyprus's location in the far east of the Mediterranean has made it a key target for neighbouring empires for thousands of years. Trading route, imperial outpost or colonial military base - occupying forces, from the Hittites to the Romans and the Crusaders to the British, have all had their own uses for Cyprus, some leaving more of a legacy than others. The island is said to be the birthplace of the ancient goddess of love, Aphrodite, and her cult thrived under Roman rule until eventually being overtaken by Christianity. Ottoman Empire forces invaded in 1570, holding the island until the early 20th century, giving rise to the minority of Turkish speakers. Attempts by the island's Greek-speaking population to join the Greek rebellion in 1821 were put down, fomenting a hatred of the Ottoman Empire among Greek Cypriots. At the end of the 19th century, Cyprus was given to Britain as a base and was formally made a British crown colony in 1925. According to legend, the Greek goddess Aphrodite was born on Cyprus

The Cyprus Tourism Industry in the 21st Century: Nicosia, Cyprus - 19 October 2001 Organised by: The tourism industry accounted for some 22% of Cyprus’ GDP in 2000. A total of 2.686.205 tourists visited Cyprus, up nearly 30% since 1995. Outbound departures accounted for a further 590.000 trips. Several important national initiatives have been undertaken to support the tourism industry:
  • The Cyprus Tourism Organisation developed a long-term national tourism strategy to 2010; Important infrastructural investments in Larnaca and Paphos Airports will support the industry in the foreseeable future.
The greatest change in the tourism industry will arguably occur as a result of Cyprus’ adoption of the Acquis Communautaire and accession to the European Union. The success of Cyprus’ tourism cannot be taken for granted. Future competitive pressures from regional destinations, pricing policy and the natural physical capacity of the island will play a role in growth planning. In order to safeguard this success and prepare the industry for the future, the Chamber has organised this conference to:

Cyprus Health Statistics Profile
*** A USAID Health Profile: CYPRUS *** This is one of a series of USAID Health Profiles produced by the Center for International Health Information (CIHI). Each profile contains descriptive information and tables concerning the country's health and demographic conditions, health indicators and trends, and when available, the health care system. Profile information is compiled from CIHI's databases and reference library, as well as through research and analysis of additional data sources and reports. The profiles are intended to provide current and trend data in a concise format to policy makers, consultants, evaluation teams, and other interested individuals and organizations. These documents are not intended to provide a comprehensive description of the total health sector of a country. Contact CIHI at the address below for information on the availability of other health profiles and standard reports. The profiles have traditionally been prepared in hard copy, a format which allows the inclusion of graphs, charts, and graphics. (This format is included as an attachment and may be downloaded, or a hard copy may be requested from CIHI.) The INTERNET presentation of the profiles attempts to effectively convey the same or similar information without the graphic presentation of data.

Fifteenth-century fresco from the Tree of Jesse stolen from Antiphonitis, Cyprus, and recently recovered in Germany (Courtesy Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations) Many of the looted frescoes were badly damaged when cut up and removed from churches in northern Cyprus. (left) [LARGER IMAGE] [LARGER IMAGE] (Courtesy Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations) Dikman's participation in the depredation of Cypriot heritage in the occupied part of the island was suspected as early as 1982. He kept a low profile, however, working through dealers and seldom meeting directly with those who purchased items from him. Whether out of fear of retribution or unwillingness to jeopardize potential future acquisitions, those who knew that he was selling looted artworks from northern Cyprus did not reveal his identity to authorities. It was not until 1989 that the extent of his role became somewhat clearer through testimony in the Goldberg case, a legal battle in federal court in Indianapolis over Byzantine mosaics from Cyprus. That nearly nine years passed from Dikman's exposure in the Goldberg case to his arrest in 1997 is a troubling commentary on the lack of a concerted international effort to end the destruction and trafficking in Cyprus' heritage. Speaking after Dikman's arrest, Athanassios Papageorgiou, an expert in Byzantine art who works for the Cypriot church, told Reuters, "We have managed to catch the mastermind of the whole smuggling operation." A chronology of what is known of Dikman's activities over the past two decades suggests that his role was a central one.
