Contact with the Middle East and, after 1500 B.C. , with Greece greatly influenced Cypriot civilization. Phoenicians settled on the island c.800 B.C. Cyprus subsequently fell under Assyrian, Egyptian, and Persian rule. Alexander the Great conquered it in 333 B.C. , after which the island again became an Egyptian dependency until its annexation by Rome in 58 B.C. Ancient Cyprus was a center of the cult of Aphrodite. After A.D. 395, Cyprus was ruled by the Byzantines until 1191, when Richard I of England conquered it. In 1192, Richard bestowed the island on Guy of Lusignan . In 1489, Cyprus was annexed by Venice. The Turks conquered it in 1571. At the Congress of Berlin (1878) the Ottoman Empire placed Cyprus under British administration, and in 1914, Britain annexed it outright. Under British rule the movement among the Greek Cypriot population for union ( enosis ) with Greece was a constant source of tension. In 1955 a Greek Cypriot organization (EOKA), led by Col. George Grivas, launched a campaign of widespread terrorism. Tension and terror mounted, especially after British authorities deported (1956)

Cyprus Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, 9,521 square kilometres in size, with a population of around 800,000. Its capital is Nicosia. The other main towns are Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974, Cyprus has been divided in two. Armenians have lived in Cyprus for centuries, but the present community on the island is mainly the result of immigration during and immediately after the Armenian Genocide of 1915-23 in Turkey. Currently, some 2000 Armenians live in Cyprus, mainly in Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. With the 1974 Turkish invasion and subsequent partitioning of the island, the Armenian community lost significant properties, such as the "Makaravank " and "Kantsvor" monasteries, a primary school and church in Nicosia, and several other vital sites and assets. To maintain a sense of community and solidarity, Armenians throughout the ages have tended to live around their churches and schools, which are typically built next to each other. Currently there are three Armenian churches and primary schools in Cyprus, one of each in each town. In addition, the community has a secondary school in Nicosia, the world renowned Melkonian Educational Institute The Armenian language has always played a pivotal role in the preservation of the Armenian national identity. For this reason, organized Armenian communities in Cyprus always had their own Armenian-language newspapers. Currently, the following newspapers are published by the community in Cyprus:

    HISTORY
Cyprus Table of Contents Christianity was introduced early in the Christian Era, when Cyprus was under Roman rule, by the apostles Paul, Mark, and Barnabas. The martyrdom of Barnabas and the later discovery of his tomb are particularly important events in the history of the Church of Cyprus and were instrumental in its becoming autocephalous rather than remaining subordinate to the patriarchate of Antioch. After doctrinal controversies split Christianity between East and West, the church survived 400 years of attempts by Roman Catholic rulers to force recognition of the authority of the pope in Rome. After Cyprus's conquest by Ottoman Turks in the sixteenth century, the sees of the Orthodox bishops were reestablished, according to the Ottoman practice of governing through a millet (a community distinguished by religion) system. Provided a millet met the empire's demands, its leaders enjoyed a degree of autonomy. The head of the Greek Cypriot millet , the archbishop, was therefore both a religious and a secular leader, and it was entirely consistent with historical tradition that, in the anticolonial struggle of the mid-1950s, Archbishop Makarios III emerged as the leader of the Greek Cypriots and was subsequently elected president of the new republic.

    CYPRUS' HISTORY
    Some facts of Cyprus
Cyprus is an ancient Mediterranean island, smaller than Sicily or Sardinia and with the population of little more than half a million. Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, 97 kilometres west of Syria and 64 kilometres of Turkey, in the map it looks like Cyprus is under Turkey. Island has 684 km coastline. Terrain is plane from central areas, this flat region gives rise to mountain in the north. Cyprus is in an area of earthquake activity and it has water resource problems; seasonal disparity in rainfall and no natural reservoirs. Heli Lantta : The location of the Cyprus is of major importance to the question of Cyprus being divided as it applies membership in the European Union. The flatness of the terrain and the fact that there are mountains in the island of Cyprus seems to me as less relevant in this context. Why did this island become a world problem threatening war and arousing deep national emotions? One thing is certain, Cyprus is not only divided by race, language and religion but it also lies in a sensitive area of international politics near the strategic and cultural meeting-point of Europe and the Middle East.

Publication accompanying the Cyprus exhibition at the 1992 Seville Universal Exhibition EXPO '92)
In antiquity Cyprus was for many centuries the biggest copper producer in the then known world and its mining industry lasted longer than all others. Although today Cyprus is no longer believed to be the place of origin for the discovery of copper, nevertheless, it is generally agreed that it was one of the most important sources of this metal for the cultures of the eastern Mediterranean throughout antiquity. The island produced copper since the Chalcolithic period but it emerged as the biggest producer and exporter of copper throughout the second millennium BC. Therefore it is no surprise that Cyprus and copper were synonymous. This was the result of the early discovery, by the ancient Cypriot miners through deep shafts and adits, that very rich copper sulphide zones existed immediately beneath the colourful gossans that cap all the copper orebodies. This discovery by itself would have been of little use had it not been accompanied by the development of methods for extracting the copper from its copper sulphide ores.

The History of Cyprus in 90 Centuries
As a fertile island, Cyprus is unsurpassed, for it produces good wine, good oil and also enough corn for its own use. In Tamassos there are, moreover, a large number of copper mines, containing copper sulphates as well as copper oxide, which is suitable for medical purposes. Eratosthenes [3rd Cent BC] tells us that in ancient times the plains used to be covered with dense forest and, as a result, could not be cultivated, but the mines remedied the situation, for the inhabitants chopped down the trees in order to smelt copper and silver. Eratosthenes also says that shipbuilding was a further reason for deforestation, for the sea was a traffic route, sometimes for whole merchant fleets. Since the islanders were unable, in spite of this, to master the sheer extent of the forest on the island, they allowed anyone who was willing and able to fell trees to adopt the land thus won as their own property, without having to pay any taxes. - Strabo 14.6.5 [AD 19] - Strabo of Amasia, Greek historian and geographer Cyprus is a young forward looking country with its roots in the Classical Greek period and stretching back over 90 centuries into the mists of prehistory and legend.
