ABOUT THE BOW GROUP
Established in 1951 as the Conservative answer to "Intellectual Socialism" and the Fabian Society, the Bow Group took its name from the Bow and Bromley Constitutional Club in London where the first meeting was held. Founder-members were included Sir Geoffrey Howe, Britain's present Foreign Secretary. Now in its 35th year, the Bow Group has approximately 900 members, mainly graduates and all selected by interview. Today nearly 100 members are in Parliament, including the Leader of the House of Commons, John Biffen; Energy Secretary Peter Walker; former Home Secretary Leon Brittan and former Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine. The Bow Group is considered somewhat of a proving ground for prospective MPs and rising Parliamentary stars. At the 1983 General Election 24 members of the Group were newly elected to Parliament, and other members serve as Members of the European Parliament and as Councilors in Local Government.

Cyprus: Two Nations in One Island
BOW EDUCATIONAL BRIEFING No.5 PART I: British foreign policy has two principal aims; to maintain the security of the British Isles, and to protect and enhance British trading interests. Allied to these aims, and indirectly supportive of them, is concern beyond our shores for justice and the rule of law, protection of human rights, and the promotion of mutual respect and understanding between peoples. Each of these factors applies in a greater or lesser degree to the island of Cyprus. The Eastern Mediterranean is important to Britain's security, in relation both to the Southern flank of NATO and to the situation in Iran and the Middle East. British trading interests, whilst small in Cyprus itself, require stability in the Region. Violations of human rights and breakdown of respect and understanding between peoples in the Region threaten both of Britain's principal foreign policy interests. Finally, Britain has residual legal rights and obligations relating to the island. A Prisoner of History
Like that other island across the Irish Sea, Cyprus is a prisoner of its history. Its present is conditioned by its past, and there is a grave danger that unless there is wisdom and imagination in the management of its affairs its future will be fettered too. Everyone who wishes the people of Cyprus well prefers to look to the future, but the past is littered with well-intentioned mistakes, and they will be repeated yet again if account is not taken of the lessons of past failures. It is therefore necessary to look in some detail at the reasons why the present situation has arisen.

It is not possible to say when first inhabitants of Cyprus lived, but it is believed possible that as long ago as 8.500 B.C. there were settlements on Cyprus. Cyprus has had many names, but the name we use now is believed to have come from the word copper of which there was, and possibly still is, an abundance of on the island. An alternative theory is that its name comes from the word Kypros (the Greek for henna) of which there was also abundance. No one knows for sure. Cyprus has had a troubled history. The abundance of copper, timber, and the strategic location between East and West resulted in repeated invasions, changes of rulers, and strife for the inhabitants.

Welcome To Northern Cyprus The third largest island in the Mediterranean , Cyprus has been occupied by a succession of peoples from Europe and Asia who sought its wealth of minerals and timber . In the 8th century BC it was within the Assyrian empire , then the Babylonian Egyptian and Persian . In 58 BC the island was seized by the Romans as part of Ptolemy`s Egyptian empire . Richard the Lionheart settled on the island in 1191 during the third Crusade and after selling it to the Knights Templar permitted Guy de Lusignan who had lost his kingdom of Jerusalem , to buy the island. Cyprus remained in Lusignan possession until captured by the Venetians in 1489 . From 1571 to 1878 it was ruled by the Ottomans until they leased its administration to Britain. Independence was granted in 1960 but after a Greek military coup in 1974 Turkey was forced to intervene to safeguard the interests of the Turkish Cypriots on the island . Partition followed and the administration of North Cyprus was subsequently proclaimed.

    History
Excavations have proved the existence of a Neolithic culture on Cyprus in the period from 6000 B.C. to 3000 B.C. Contact with the Middle East and, after 1500 B.C. , with Greece greatly influenced Cypriot civilization. Phoenicians settled on the island c.800 B.C. Cyprus subsequently fell under Assyrian, Egyptian, and Persian rule. Alexander the Great conquered it in 333 B.C. , after which the island again became an Egyptian dependency until its annexation by Rome in 58 B.C. Ancient Cyprus was a center of the cult of Aphrodite. After A.D. 395, Cyprus was ruled by the Byzantines until 1191, when Richard I of England conquered it. In 1192, Richard bestowed the island on Guy of Lusignan . In 1489, Cyprus was annexed by Venice. The Turks conquered it in 1571. At the Congress of Berlin (1878) the Ottoman Empire placed Cyprus under British administration, and in 1914, Britain annexed it outright. Under British rule the movement among the Greek Cypriot population for union ( enosis ) with Greece was a constant source of tension. In 1955 a Greek Cypriot organization (EOKA), led by Col. George Grivas, launched a campaign of widespread terrorism. Tension and terror mounted, especially after British authorities deported (1956)

It is a lecture given recently by Brendan O'Malley to an audience of G/Cs, T/Cs, Greeks and Turks in Boston. CYPRUS: HISTORY, PRESENT AND THE FUTURE SERIES Origins of the Cyprus Problem, a lecture by Brendan O'Malley at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, United States, 16.1.01 Ladies and gentleman, it is a great honour to be asked to come here today to address the first lecture in this series launched by the Cypriot friends of Boston. The peace movement in Cyprus has already shown what a powerful force young people can be in bringing people together and breaking down barriers to reconciliation and I hope the students of Boston and elsewhere in the United States can emulate their example in winning hearts and changing minds. So let me begin: In Britain we have an award they call the Turner prize, named after the famous 19th century painter William Turner, which is meant to go to the best young artist of our time, but many think it actually goes to the one who can provoke the most outrage.

The conflict was aggravated by Turkish support of Turkish Cypriot demands for partition of the island. Negotiations (1955) among Britain, Greece, and Turkey on the status of Cyprus broke down completely. Finally in 1959, a settlement was reached, providing for Cypriot independence in 1960 and for the terms of the constitution. Treaties precluded both

Cyprus History Of Conflic Cyprus History Of Conflic annon Cyprus, an island in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the cross-roads of three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa - has one of the oldest histories of the world, dating back 9000 years. Its strategic position, its wealth in forests and mineral deposits, as well as its skilled craftsmen, made it the prized possession of the powers of the day. Cultural influences came from all directions - all major regional civilisations left their mark on the island, contributing to the development of a very rich and diverse cultural heritage. ANCIENT TIMES The Stone Age The first signs of human life on the island date back to c. 8500 BC during the Palaeolithic period. Evidence of human activity was found in cave dwellings near Liopetri, though it is not known whether they were just hunting parties passing through or permanent settlers. The first undisputed settlements are believed to have been established towards the end of the 8th millennium BC. Vestiges of such early communities are found all over the island, such as at Khirokitia, Kalavasos-Tenta, Apostolos Andreas- Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limniti.
