TURKISH MILITARY INTERVENTION of 1974
After 1967 some hopes arose that a compromise on separate municipalities could be achieved in negotiations between Glafcos Clerides and Rauf Denktas and certainly agreement came close, but the Makarios government could not accept de jure separateness, which would have denied the principle of the unitary, if bi-communal, state. Inter-communal strife was also overshadowed during this period by a serious rift on the Greek side, between Makarios and the enosist National Front supported by the Greek junta. Makarios had now become an obstacle to enosis. An attempt was made on his life, and Grivas returned in 1971 to head a new organi- sation, EOKA-B, with Makarios, rather than the Turkish-Cypriots, in its sight. Makarios was told from Athens to dismiss his foreign minister and to regard Athens as the National Centre. Makarios rallied supporters successfully against attempts to remove him. He was still popular in Cyprus. Matters became worse when a new junta came to power in September 1973, and there was less relief from rightist pressure than might have been expected when Grivas died suddenly in January 1974. The pressure mounted until a coup in July 1974 led by a `hammer of the Turks' Nicos Sampson, overthrew Makarios, who managed to flee the country via a British base. For Turkey this raised the spectre of Greek control of Cyprus.

http://www.greece.org/themis/cyprus/annan/cyphistory.htm

The Greek settlement of Cyprus began during the Iron Age in the 2nd millennium BC with the establishment of city-states by the Mycenaeans and Achaeans. Greek culture established itself on the island and was able to withstand the vicissitudes of subsequent foreign domination by the Assyrians (8th-6th centuries BC), the Egyptians (560-540 BC) and the Persians (540-332 BC). Alexander the Great put an end to Persian rule of the island in 330 BC. Cyprus was ruled by Alexander’s Ptolemy descendant dynasty from 323 to 30 BC and then became a province of the Roman Empire from 30 BC to 330 AD. Cyprus was converted to Christianity by Saints Paul and Barnabas around 45 AD. Cyprus was also a province of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman Empire captured Cyprus from the Venetians in 1571. The Hellenic awareness of the people of Cyprus can be attested to by their identification with and support for the Greek War of Independence during which the Archbishop of Cyprus was executed for supporting Hellenic independence. In 1878, the Ottoman Empire ceded Cyprus to Great Britain so that Russian ambitions in the Mediterranean could be checked. During World War one, Cyprus was formally annexed by Great Britain as a result of the Ottoman Empire's decision to become an ally of Germany. In 1923, British rule over Cyprus was formalized by the Treaty of Lausanne while Turkey formally renounced all claims to Cyprus.

Cyprus History
Cyprus is the third largest island in the east Mediterranean Sea, some 47 miles from the southern coastline of Turkey. The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the United Nations Organisation (UN) and Council of Europe and has a business relationship with the European Community (EC). It is also a member of the British Commonwealth. Of the population of 702,000, 80 per cent are of Greek origin and fewer than 20 per cent of Turkish origin. Because of its geographical position, Cyprus has seen many invasions. The oldest known settlement in Cyprus dates from the Neolithic Age (7000-3900 BC). During the 14th century BC, Mycenean and Achaean Greeks reached the island and during the 12th and 11th centuries BC Achaean Greeks settled on the island, bringing with them the Greek language, religion and customs. From the 8th century BC, Cyprus fell prey to several conquerors: the Assyrians (708 BC), the Egyptians (560 BC) and the Persians (385 BC). Following Alexander the Great's defeat of Persia at the Battle of Issos in 333BC, Cyprus became part of his empire. After the death of Alexander, the island came under the influence of the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt. Under the Ptolemies, the island's culture, shipping, commerce and architecture thrived. The Ptolemaic period was ended by annexation by the Romans in 58 BC. The single most important event during Roman rule was the introduction of Christianity during the reign of the Emperor Claudius. After the division of the Roman Empire into two parts, Cyprus became part of the Byzantine Empire under the rule of Constantine the Great. The Byzantine period saw a series of Arab raids beginning in the first part of the seventh century. These raids shattered the peaceful life of the islanders and did not cease until the Arabs were decisively defeated by Nicephorus Fokas in AD 965.

Therefore, by having Turkey, Greece, and Great Britain as the guarantor powers, the International Treaties of 1960, named the Republic of Cyprus , and gave Cyprus its independence from Great Britain . It was thought to be a good compromise as it guaranteed a permanent settlement. It is the London-Zurich Treaties of February 1959, which gave Cyprus its independence but still it was not a full one. It guaranteed ‘that the two communities should be co-founder partners with equal political rights; that communal matters would be in the autonomous domain of elected communal chambers; that there would be no fear and no likelihood of one community dominating the other’. Cyprus History and Culture
History According to archaeological investigation and conjecture, the aboriginal inhabitants of Cyprus were Indo-European people who had a written language. Extensive excavation has shown that during the Neolithic and Bronze ages the Cypriots had an advanced civilization. Culture Examples of Cypriot folk art, which is an outgrowth of traditional Greek art, are in the Folk Art Museum (1950) in Nicosia. The Cyprus Museum (1883) at Nicosia houses many archaeological artifacts found on the island. Museums in Paphos, Larnaca, and Lemesós display other important collections.

... Ad Infinitum Ancient Cyprus History Although an island in comparison to the surrounding countries Cyprus was destined to play a very important role in the history of mankind. This was bound to be so since the island is located in the centre of the ancient world which is known as the cradle of western civilisation. Asia Minor is only 40 miles away and the Syrian coast only 60 miles from the easternmost tip of the Karpass Peninsula Egypt and the Aegean Sea are 240 miles apart. Therefore it was only natural that a great civilisation flowered in Cyprus beginning as early as the 8th millennium BC when stone was the only material used either for weapons or utensils. The discovery of copper which occurred in the 3rd millennium marked the turning point in the history of the island which gradually turned it into a bone of contention among the more powerful neighbours. The Hittites in Anatolia and Egypt in the south claimed the island as their possession but the Greeks from the west were those who stamped its destiny when in the late 13th - 12th - 11th centuries BC they established themselves as permanent settlers. Despite the fact that the island fell prey to all the big powers of the day the presence of Greeks gave Cyprus a historical and cultural continuity ever since .....
