Human figurine of grey andesite from Khirokitia The Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia Cyprus, though a small island, has always played an important role in the history of the Mediterranean, far exceeding its size. The first signs of undisputed human activity can be traced back to the 8th millennium BC when the first settlements are encountered. Vestiges of such early communities are found all over the island, like at Khirokitia, Kalavasos-Tenta, Apostolos Andreas-Kastros, Phrenaros, Petra tou Limniti etc. Neolithic Cypriots built circular houses with small undressed stones for the lower structures and sun-dried mudbricks and clay for the middle and superstructure. The daily life of the people in those neolithic villages was spent in farming, hunting, animal husbandry and the lithic industry, while women were engaged in spindling and weaving cloths, in addition to their probable participation in other works as well. The lithic industry was the most individual feature of this aceramic culture and innumerable stone vessels made of grey andesite have been discovered during excavations. Plant remains indicate the cultivation of cereals, lentils, beans, peas and a kind of plum called

    Cyprus History
Although a small country, Cyprus has an almost overwhelming cultural heritage. Wherever you travel you will find ancient monuments and sites, churches and monasteries bearing silent witness to over 9 000 years of civilization and history. Cyprus stands at the crossroads of Africa, Asia and Europe and this exotic mix is well-reflected in Cyprus' cultural history.

    Cyprus: A brief history
History in Cyprus dates as far back as 7000 BC, the Neolithic Age, with settlements along the north and south coasts of the island.
After1400 BC, the first Greeks came to the island, Mycenaen merchants, who started the Hellenisation of the island.
By1050 BC Cyprus can be considered a Greek island, with the language, culture and religion of Greece well established. Cyprus has ten city-kingdoms and by 800 BC it is a flourishing and prosperous country.
From750 BC Cyprus is conquered several times by Assyria, Egypt and Persia. In 333 BC Alexander the Great claims Cyprus for part of his empire. Cyprus continues to be part of the Hellenist Empire until 58 BC.
In 58 BC Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire. Saint Paul is converted to Christianity whilst in Cyprus and Cyprus becomes the first country governed by a Christian.

    History
Cyprus has always been an important trading post between the empires of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and throughout history someone has always wanted to take it from someone else. First the Mycenaeans grabbed it, then the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians and Persians. Alexander the Great took it off them, then Ptolemy snatched it from him. Rome took over in 58 BC and kept the place in relative peace and security until the 7th century, when the Byzantine and Islamic empires started three centuries of bickering over it. In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the Crusades, dropped into Cyprus for a spot of conquering, but the Cypriots caused him too much trouble (one of them killed his hawk and he was forced to massacre a few villages in retaliation), so he sold them to the Knights Templar. The Templars sold the island to Guy de Lusignan, whose heirs hung in for three centuries, repressing the culture and orthodox religion but doing wonders for the economy. The Venetians took over in 1489, but were booted out by the expanding Ottoman Empire in 1571, which kept Cyprus for 300 years before handing it over to Britain.

1983 Declaration of TRNC and aftermath Turkish-Cypriot parliament members voting for the declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on 15 November 1983 On November 1983, the Parliament of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus proclaimed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC, or simply North Cyprus). The proclamation emphasised that the declaration of statehood was a manifestation of the right of self-determination of the Turkish-Cypriot people. The Security Council of the UN met on 17 and 18 November and adopted Resolution 541 which described the attempt to create TRNC as `legally invalid', called for the withdrawal of the Declaration of Independence, and asked all countries not to recognise the new republic.
Signatures of the Turkish Cypriot MPs declaring Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent republic Turkish-Cypriots argued that the Security Council was a political organisation concerned with peace and security and not a judicial organisation competent to judge the `legality' or `validity' of states. So, there are, in effect, two states on the island today, one internationally recognised, the other recognised only by Turkey. Both are democratic and conduct their international relations separately. But only the Greek-Cypriot state is recognised by international and regional organisations such as those of the UN and the EU.

Long an important part of eastern Mediterranean trade, Cyprus saw civilizations come and go: the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Byzantines, even the English passed through during the Crusades as Richard the Lion-Hearted established a crusader entity at the end of the 12th century. In 1489, Venice took over Cyprus and then came the Ottomans in 1571. Placed under British control by the Congress of Berlin in 1878, it was annexed by Britain in 1914. Eleven years later, Britain made Cyprus a formal colony. Tensions between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots have led to violence at various points, post World War II. In 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied the northern 40% of the island. The occupation has continued, though the international community has not seen fit to recognize the area's self-proclaimed status as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (1983). The rest of the island has prospered with reasonable political stability, foreign investment, and tourism.

    CYPRUS HISTORY
During the 12th and 11th centuries B.C. Achaean Greeks come to settle on the island bringing with them the Greek language, their religion, their customs. They build new cities like Paphos, Salamis, Kition. The 8th century B.C. is a period of great prosperity but the island falls prey to several conquerors. Cypriot Kingdoms try to preserve their independence but come under the domination of Assyria and then Egypt and Persia. King Evagoras of Salamis (who ruled from 411-374 BC) rebels against Persia and unifies the island but, after a great siege has to conclude peace with Persia and loses control of the whole island. In 333 BC Alexander the Great defeats Persia and Cyprus becomes part of his empire. After Alexander's death Cyprus comes under the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt, and belongs from now onwards to the Greek Alexandrine world. The capital is now Paphos. This is a period of wealth for Cyprus. In 358 BC Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire. During the missionary journeys by Saints Paul and Barnabas, Cyprus becomes the first country to be governed by Christian. Destructive earthquakes occur during the 1st century B.C. and the 1at A.D. and cities are rebuilt. After the division of the Roman Empire in two parts 330 A.D., Cyprus comes under the Hellenic empire of Byzantium known as Eastern Roman Empire, with Constantinople as its capital. Constantine the Great's mother, Helena is said to have stopped in Cyprus on her journey from the Holy Land, with remnants of the Holy Cross and founded the monastery of Stavrovouni. More earthquakes during the 4th century A.D. completely destroy the main cities. Cities lose their splendor and remain in ruins. New cities arise, Constantia is now the capital, and large basilicas are built as from the 4-5th century A.D. In 647 Arabs invade the island. In 688 Emperor Justinian II and Caliph al-Malik sign a treaty neutralizing Cyprus, but violations are reported, and the island is also attacked by pirates until 965 when Emperor Nicephoros Phocas expels Arabs from Asia Minor and Cyprus.
