Cyprus, a onetime Greek colony and the site of many military incursions over the centuries, is still today, an island in conflict between two opposing factions.
The southern part of this Mediterranean island ( the Greek Area ) is called the Republic of Cyprus, and is controlled by the officially recognized Cyprus government.
About one-third of Cyprus is occupied by Turkey, and they call it the Republic of Northern Cyprus. That claim is not recognized by the United Nations, or any other country.
Because of a Turkish invasion in 1974, the United Nation's established a buffer zone (colored gray), and that zone runs through the middle of the island, dissecting the capital city of Nicosia.
Even though Cyprus gained its independence from the UK in 1960, there remains two British sovereign bases on the island. (colored yellow)
Through it all, this ancient island remains a popular regional tourist destination, one famed for its sunny weather and fascinating history.

Introductory Address
CYPRUS GOVERNMENT By Solon Kassinis
Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Chairman
Your Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen It is indeed a great pleasure and honour to address this conference on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Renewable energy sources are indigenous and contribute to all three key objectives for energy policy which are general for all countries, namely; Competitiveness, security of supply, and protection of the environment. They can actively contribute to employment and they can be a key future in regional development, research and technological development. At present prices for conventional energy do not reflect their full environmental cost putting RE at a competitive disadvantage. Even though Cyprus has proven to the world that the solar water heaters are economical and that is the reason why 91% of the houses and 50% of the hotels in Cyprus are using solar waters heaters. The message I would like to convey to you is that Cyprus is ready, willing and available to co-operate with you and share its 10 years of experience in the solar Energy Sector. Thank you Mr. Chairman

Schools and Church
It is no coincident that most schools and churches of the Armenian communities in the Diaspora are either build on the same premises, or near to each other.
In Nicosia
Nicosia its the main cultural center of the Armenian Cypriots. The first Armenian school was build in 1887 , with the donation of the Armenians communities of Egypt, France and England. In 1921 and 1938 with the contribution of the Melikian and Ouzounian families, two new premises were build. The school continued to function under the name Melikian-Ouzounian until 1963 when it was taken over by the Turks after the inter communal fighting between the Greeks Cypriots and Turk Cypriots. With the help of the Cyprus government a temporary building was build in the premises of the Melkonian Educational Institute which was used as a school until 1972, when again with the generous donation of the Cyprus government a proper school was build on Armenia Ave. The school was named "Nareg", as were all the Armenian primary schools in Cyprus. At this point it's should be mentioned that the Armenian primary schools in Cyprus are financially supported by the Cyprus government, without interfering with the schools curriculum or internal affairs.

The Republic of cyprus government is illegally occupied by the Greek Cypriots.Despite the international treaties for a shared government
    http://www.ece.utexas.edu/~arifler/html/a_brief_synopsis.html
    Divided Cyprus
    • 1571-1878: Conquest of the island by Ottoman Turks. Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots live in peace for almost 3 centuries building a common Cypriot culture. 1878-1960: Cyprus becomes a British Colony. 1960: Independence from Great Britain and establishment of the Republic of Cyprus. Greek and Turkish Cypriots established as equal partners of the republic. 1963-74: Inter-communal conflicts between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Systematic attacks against Turkish Cypriots. Many Turkish Cypriots forced out of their homes into ghettos. Turkish Cypriots driven away from the government. 1974: The Turkish military intervention to Cyprus immediately following a coup d'etat by ultra-nationalist Greek Cypriots backed by the military regime in Greece. The Greek coup d'etat intended to annex the island to Greece despite the international treaties guaranteeing the independence of the republic.
Turkey's military intervention in 1974 was based on the guarantor rights granted by the international treaties of 1960 to restore the independence of the republic and prevent further bloodshed in the civil war. However, the Turkish military intervention results in the division of the island, displacement of tens of thousands of people (both Greek and Turkish Cypriots), and thousands of unaccounted missing people.
1974-83: Greek and Turkish Cypriots fail to reach an agreement for reunification of the island. In 1983, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is declared in the Turkish-controlled, northern part of the island.
