    GEOGRAPHY AND
    POPULATION

Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean, lying at the hub of three continents and close to the busy trade routes linking Western Europe with the Arab World and the Far East. Cyprus' total area is 9.25 1 sq kms and is comparable in size to Lebanon in the Middle East or Connecticut in the United States. The island's time zone is exactly 7 hours ahead of New York and 7 hours behind Tokyo.
The island enjoys the best type of Mediterranean climate with about 300 days of sunshine per year . The bulk of the rain falls during the period from November to March. The coldest month is January with minimum and maximum mean temperatures of 6 C and 13 C, respectively, while in August, the hottest month, the corresponding minimum and maximum mean temperatures are 21 C and 36 C.
Cyprus' estimated population is 730.000 of which 87,5 percent belongs to the Greek Cypriot community and 12,5 percent to the Turkish Cypriot community. Greek and Turkish are the official languages of the Republic but English is widely spoken and understood, and is regularly used in commerce and government.

The President exercises executive power through a Council of Ministers appointed by him. Ministers may be chosen from outside the House of Representatives. Cyprus is a member of the United Nations and U.N. Agencies. It is also a member of the Council of Europe, the Commonwealth, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and many other international Organisations. Following the signing of the EU Enlargement Treaty in Athens on April 16, 2003 and its subsequent ratification by the Cypriot House of Representatives, Cyprus will officialy join the EU on May 01 , 2004. Legislature The legislative authority in the Republic is exercised by the House of Representatives now consisting of eighty members (56 of whom are to be Greek Cypriots and 24 Turkish Cypriots) elected by universal suffrage for a five-year term. At the time of its establishment, the House consisted of 50 members, 35 of whom were to be Greek Cypriots and 15 Turkish Cypriots. APHRODITE'S ISLAND
The charms of "Aphrodite's Island," as Cyprus is known, are manifold and manifest. The weather is sunny and dry for a good part of the year and the sea is enticing, blue and crystal clear. Cyprus has picturesque mountain villages, remote monasteries, crusaders' castles, exquisite Roman mosaics and imposing temples. The tiny Byzantine churches tucked away in the folds of foothills contain unforgettable masterpieces by artists often long forgotten.
Cyprus is the third-largest Mediterranean island after Sicily and Sardinia. Those seeking isolation can find it even during peak season, if they are willing to wander off the beaten track. In recent years, the government has launched a number of programs to encourage the preservation of traditional communities, especially in the interior. Cyprus has a homey charm, innate in the character of the friendly locals who have never lost their enthusiasm for welcoming visitors.
Cyprus is also known as the "Island of Love," largely due to the legacy of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. It is steeped in romantic settings, and its fine cuisine and wine lend themselves to the pursuit of hedonistic pleasures. Even more telling is a love of life, which lies deep within the soul of the Cypriot, embracing good company and camaraderie.
