    Geography of Cyprus
Location: Middle East , island in the Mediterranean Sea , south of Turkey
''This image, acquired by NASA’s Terra satellite on January 30th 2001, shows the three distinct geologic regions of the island. In the central and western part of the island is the Troödos Massif, a mountain range whose surface layer is mostly basaltic lava rock, and whose maximum elevation is 1953 m (6405 ft). Running in a thin arc along the northeast margin of the island is Cyprus’ second mountain range, a limestone formation called the Kyrenia Range. The space between these ranges is home to the capital Nicosia, visible as a grayish-brown patch near the image’s center.

In 1974, a Greek-sponsored attempt to seize the government was met by military intervention from Turkey, which soon controlled almost 40% of the island. In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," but it is recognized only by Turkey. UN-led direct talks between the two sides to reach a comprehensive settlement to the division of the island began in January 2002. Geography is Destiny: Cyprus and the Fate of the Eastern Mediterranean The Honorable George Iacovou The accession of Cyprus to the EU, while of critical importance to the Cypriot people, is also part of a far larger and constructive dynamic affecting the stability of the region as whole. EU enlargement is a cornerstone of a post-Cold War era of peace, security and cooperation extending to Europe’s eastern and southern flanks. A united and free Europe, a goal that the U.S. has long supported, offers the promise of consolidating the values of democracy, individual rights, free markets and the rule of law in an ever-growing sphere. It also strengthens the transatlantic relationship characterized by cooperation rather than antagonism. Cyprus’s EU membership is mutually beneficial: clearly, it will provide benefits for Cyprus; at the same time, it will serve to expand the global reach of the EU, while enhancing regional stability and integration.

    GEOLOGY - GEOGRAPHY
Cyprus is nearly 200 million years old. During the time the continent of Africa has been moving north-eastwards at a speed of about 2 cm. a year and Eurasia eastwards at about 0.3 cm. a year, Cyprus lying in the confrontation zone between these two huge plates.
The Troodos mountains (Southern Range) were formed as an ocean ridge at depths of 2 to 4 km, beginning about 85 to 75 million years ago, in the Upper Creataceous period.
The Alphine chain of which the GIRNE range (Northern Range) is a part was caused by the folding and fracturing of the Sedimentary rocks that formed on the ocean (Tethys) floor between Africa and Eurasia. The GIRNE range is the backbone of North Cyprus, consisting mainly of marble and dolomite types of hard limestone. Its age is believed to be 100 million years.
About two million years ago Cyprus consisted of a chain of islands. The peaks of the Northern Range were separated from the Troodos island to the south by a shallow sea. The land continued to rise and the shallow sea gradually became the MESAORIA plain, making Cyprus one island.

    Displaced Jews in Europe: 1945-1951
Dateline: 05/18/98 Approximately six million European Jews were killed during the Holocaust during World War II. Many of the European Jews who survived the persecution and death camps had nowhere to go after V-E Day, May 8, 1945. Not only had Europe been practically destroyed but many survivors did not want to return to their pre-war homes in Poland or Germany. Jews became Displaced Persons (also known as DPs) and spent time in helter-skelter camps, some of which were located at former concentration camps. The preferred migration destination for almost all survivors of the genocide was a Jewish homeland in Palestine. That dream eventually came true for many. As the Allies were taking Europe back from Germany in 1944-1945, the Allied armies "liberated" the Nazi concentration camps. These camps, which housed from a few dozen to thousands of survivors, were complete surprises for most of the liberating armies. The armies were overwhelmed by the misery, by the victims who were so thin and near-death. A dramatic example of what the soldiers found upon liberation of the camps occurred at Dachau where a train load of 50 boxcars of prisoners sat on the railroad for days, as the Germans were escaping. There were about 100 people in each boxcar and of the 5,000 prisoners, about 3,000 were already dead upon the arrival of the army.

    • What benefits does Cyprus anticipate, as it joins the European Union (EU)? • Why does the UN maintain a peacekeeping force in Cyprus? • Who's working to resolve the "Cyprus Issue" in our time — and what do they propose? Here's some background for your research into those questions. July 14, 2003: A joyful day for the Republic of Cyprus! The country's legislators voted unanimously to make Cyprus a full member of the European Union (EU). And Cypriots celebrated the new future that lay before them: Within a year, the Republic would be a full and active member of the world's largest free market, one shared by the people of 25 nations. Even more significant: Cyprus would benefit from EU programs dealing with economic, social, environmental, educational, and security issues.
    "Roots."
Centuries later (1571 CE), Ottomans from nearby Turkey conquered Cyprus. For a long time, their Turkish Cypriot descendants lived at peace with Greek Cypriots. But tensions grew after Britain gained control of Cyprus in 1878. By the 1950s, Greek Cypriots were increasingly campaigning for the union of Cyprus with Greece ( enosis ). And Turkish Cypriots urged that Cyprus be partitioned between Greece and Turkey (
