The island fell successively under Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Greek, and Roman domination. For 800 years, beginning in 364 AD, Cyprus was ruled by Byzantium. In 1571, the island was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and was ceded to Great Britain in 1878. Annexed formally by the United Kingdom in 1914 it became a crown colony in 1925. British rule lasted until August 1960 when, after a four-year liberation struggle, the island became independent and was proclaimed a Republic. In 1974, a coup was staged in Cyprus by the Greek-military junta to seize the government of the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, answered by a military intervention from Turkey in which the Turkish troops soon controlled about 37% of the island. 40% of the total Greek Cypriot population, were forced to leave their homes in the occupied area. Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided de facto into the government-controlled two-thirds of the island in the south and the Turkish Cypriot one-third in the north, with an by UN peacekeeping forces maintained buffer zone between them. Under the influence of the United Nations and the European Union efforts to reunite the island under a federal structure are ongoing.

In the central and western part of the island is the Troödos Massif, a mountain range whose surface layer is mostly basaltic lava rock, and whose maximum elevation is 1953 m (6405 ft). Running in a thin arc along the northeast margin of the island is Cyprus’ second mountain range, a limestone formation called the Kyrenia Range. The space between these ranges is home to the capital Nicosia, visible as a grayish-brown patch near the image’s center. Geography The physical setting for life on the island is dominated by the mountain masses and the central plain they encompass, the Mesaoria. The Troodos Mountains cover most of the southern and western portions of the island and account for roughly half its area. The narrow Kyrenia Range, extending along the northern coastline, occupies substantially less area, and elevations are lower. The two mountain systems run generally parallel to the Taurus Mountains on the Turkish mainland, whose silhouette is visible from northern Cyprus. Coastal lowlands, varying in width, surround the island. Terrain The rugged Troodos Mountains, whose principal range stretches from Pomos Point in the northwest almost to Larnaca Bay on the east, are the single most conspicuous feature of the landscape. Intensive uplifting and folding in the formative period left the area highly fragmented, so that subordinate ranges and spurs veer off at many angles, their slopes incised by steep-sided valleys. In the southwest, the mountains descend in a series of stepped foothills to the coastal plain. While the Troodos Mountains are a massif formed of molten igneous rock, the Kyrenia Range is a narrow limestone ridge that rises suddenly from the plains. Its easternmost extension becomes a series of foothills on the Karpas Peninsula. That peninsula points toward Asia Minor, to which Cyprus belongs geologically.

OFFICIAL GREEK CYPRIOT REPORT ON EDUCATION: SCHOOLS IN SOUTH CYPRUS AIM TO SPUR MILITANCY Students in South Cyprus are systematically encouraged by Greek Cypriot authorities to take part in demonstrations against the TRNC along the borders. Schools officially close in order to allow children to participate and teachers along with officials typically make speeches which incite children to acts of violence and hatred. On many occasions teenager students have clashed with UNFICYP personnel inside the buffer-zone. They have chanted anti-Turkish slogans and thrown rocks etc. towards the North. A recently published report on education in 1997 has revealed that: The primary aim of education in South Cyprus is to teach children not to forget the "occupation". One educational programme is entitled "I get to know, I do not forget, I struggle against the occupation". The Greek Cypriot government's programme to remember the "invasion" is the primary objective in schools. The report states that: "The programme formed the spine of militancy in schools and the route of the people of Cyprus for achieving its visions." "The main target is to keep alive the memory of our land still under occupation, to foster and strengthen optimism, confidence and militancy for freedom and return to our fatherland."
