We are Richard and Sue, with Daniel (17) and Timothy (15). We have four cats: Cleo, Sophia, Jemima and Tessa. The four human members of the family come from England, but are now living in Cyprus. When we moved here in October 1997 , we embarked on home education as a temporary measure while settling in. It proved so successful and enjoyable that we have continued! You can read more about this, and lots of information about home education in the UK, in the home education pages . Check too the Free Range Education site which - among other things - links to a book published at the end of 2000, including a chapter about our family. NEW:

"Cyprus .... a land famous in all ages. The rosy realm
of Venus, the romantic kingdom of the Crusaders."
Cyprus, a little world in itself.... no wild beasts or
reptiles disturb the solitude. The water is sweet
and cool, the wine is nectar and the food plain

will clode my eyes."
The singular interest of the history of Cyprus is primarily due to its geographical position.
There is no country whose fortunes have been more varied, or which has reflected more
faithfully the ebb and flow of races. It has been the meeting-place of Aryan and Semite,of West and East,of Egypt and Asia, of Christian and Moslem. Possessed in turn by great monarchies of the East, by Greeks, Arabs, Crusaders, Turks, and Christians,it has been in the forefront of every racial and religious struggle until, finally after a transitional period during which it was occupied by a Christian Power of the West, while paying tribute, as in the earliest times, to an Eastern master, it has

Its importance has been honoured by UNESCO which has included nine of the island's Byzantine mountain churches and the entire town of Kato Pafos in its World Cultural Heritage List.
Wherever you tread in Cyprus you are reminded of a strong tradition that is kept alive from generation to generation through the many events which are celebrated.
Hardly a week goes by in Cyprus without a celebration of some sort, whether it be a colourful festival or homage to a saint on one of the numerous 'name' days. The 'Panigiri', a traditional open-air fete, takes place mainly in the villages on the occassion of a saint's name day. Easter, the most important Greek Orthodox religious event, is celebrated with solemnity, joy and hope.

Country Profile

Flag of Cyprus Background:
Cypriot culture is among the oldest in the Mediterranean. The island fell successively under Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Greek, and Roman domination. For 800 years, beginning in 364 AD, Cyprus was ruled by Byzantium. In 1571, the island was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and was ceded to Great Britain in 1878. Annexed formally by the United Kingdom in 1914 it became a crown colony in 1925. British rule lasted until August 1960 when, after a four-year liberation struggle, the island became independent and was proclaimed a Republic. In 1974, a coup was staged in Cyprus by the Greek-military junta to seize the government of the President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, answered by a military intervention from Turkey in which the Turkish troops soon controlled about 37% of the island. 40% of the total Greek Cypriot population, were forced to leave their homes in the occupied area. Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided de facto into the government-controlled two-thirds of the island in the south and the Turkish Cypriot one-third in the north, with an by UN peacekeeping forces maintained buffer zone between them. Under the influence of the United Nations and the European Union efforts to reunite the island under a federal structure are ongoing.

The People The people of Cyprus are traditionally warm and welcoming and consider a visit to their island as a compliment - one that is repaid with genuine hospitality, summed up in the Greek word Philoxenia: Friendship towards the guest. Their native language is Greek, but English is readily spoken in all the shops, restaurants and hotels - in fact just about everywhere. In a world of ever-increasing violence, Cyprus has a remarkably low crime rate, and from just one visit to the Island the visitor can understand why. The pace is leisurely, the people kind and helpful, always ready with a smile. The Cypriots are hard workers too - resilient people who have withstood and accommodated the succession of invaders throughout their long history. Town and Village Life The towns of Cyprus present a modern cosmopolitan atmosphere blended with historic buildings and ancient monuments. Imposing colonial and classic style buildings rub shoulders with well-designed contemporary hotels, apartment blocks and attractive shopping streets, some narrow and quaint, others thoroughly modern.

Cyprus History and Culture
History According to archaeological investigation and conjecture, the aboriginal inhabitants of Cyprus were Indo-European people who had a written language. Extensive excavation has shown that during the Neolithic and Bronze ages the Cypriots had an advanced civilization. Culture Examples of Cypriot folk art, which is an outgrowth of traditional Greek art, are in the Folk Art Museum (1950) in Nicosia. The Cyprus Museum (1883) at Nicosia houses many archaeological artifacts found on the island. Museums in Paphos, Larnaca, and Lemesós display other important collections.

Hospitality 'Hoshgeldiniz' - A warm smile and a welcome are typical Cypriot characteristics Hospitality is one of the cornerstones of the Turkish-Cypriot way of life. Following Koranic tenets and their naturally friendly instincts, The Turkish-Cypriot are a most gracious and generous hosts. Even the poorest peasant in a remote Karpas peninsula feels bound to honour his/her guest ("misafir") in the best possible manner. Hospitality taken to such lengths that a foreign guest often feels s/he is suffering from an overdose of it after being plied with food, and drinks for hours and being unable to refuse anything, lest s/he hurts his /her host's feelings. In addition to ensuring his/her guest's material well being, the Cypriot-Turks make every effort to converse, no matter what linguistic barriers might exist. However, note that in this charming island republic, aspects of British culture and heritage are subtle but visible everywhere. Most people in Northern Cyprus speak good English, drive on the left, and English Pound Sterling is welcomed as an alternative payment to Lira. Let us leave you with this observation by a foreign journalist about the traditional Turkish-Cypriot hospitality: "Northern Cyprus was as good as we'd been told: miles of untainted beaches lapped by clear blue water, superb weather, cheap prices. From the moment we landed ... ...we were overwhelmed by hospitality. It was as if we and the Turkish Cypriots were old friends who'd been long parted."

Cyprus was an ideal staging area during the crusades, a vital point of supply and a strategically important bastion for the Western armies. It also offered first-rate harbours ( Famagusta for example) only two-days' sailing from the Egyptian coast and mere hours from Syria. Cyprus' climate, foodstuffsand raw materials made it a paradise on earth. In 14th century French poetry, the island was frequently referred to as "Engaddy, la precieuse vigne" (Engaddy, the precious vine). During the Third Crusade, Richard the Lion-Hearted was unable to resist the island's charms, and in 1991 added it to his possessions. A year later he sold it to the Templars for œ40,000. Unable to afford the luxury of a private island they resoldit to the dispossessed king of Jerusalem, Guy de Lusignan, scion of a noble French family from the Poitou region. Thus, brought radical change and marked the beginning of a flourishing period in the history of Cyprus. The French instituted a feudal society despite resistance by the locals and the Orthodox Church, establishing a court on the Western model in Nicosia . French "colonization" did not end until 1489, when the island was taken by the
