    the Khirokitia culture
As far as we know Cyprus has always been an island, at least since the appearance of man in the Near East. Cyprus faces the south coast of Anatolia on the one hand, and that of Syria and the Lebanon on the other both areas rich in Palaeolithic remains. The aceramic culture of Khirokitia - is dated by the C-14 method to the sixth millennium B C (6020, Two features of the culture have no parallels elsewhere; a flint industry of peculiar type which is not microlithic, possibly a descendant of the Upper Palaeolithic, and secondly a round-headed (brachycephalic) population at Khirokitia itself, perhaps the result of isolation or a habit of cranial deformation. Khirokitia is not a mound, but a hill site about 5 metres in diameter situated within a bend of the Maroniou river. It commands a view down to the south coast, which is a few miles away. A paved stone road running for about 2oo metres through the settlement was traced leading down the hill towards the river. Forty-eight round houses of tholos type were excavated, a small proportion of the entire settlement, which may have contained a thousand houses and a population running into the thousands, for Khirokitia was evidently more than a village. Three main levels of buildings were found and the extremely solid construction of the houses indicates a considerable duration of the settlement.

    http://www.cyprusexplorer.com/
    Welcome to Cyprus
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is located in the northeastern area of the Mediterranean Sea.
With a population of only 700 000, large areas of the island remain completely unspoiled.
However, as a result of the Turkish invasion of 1974, 37% of the island remains under Turkish rule. The so-called 'Green Line' border that cuts directly through the capital, Nicosia divides the country, now the last remaining divided capital in Europe.
Cyprus is an island steeped in history and has a rich cultural heritage. Visitors and tourists that travel to Cyprus have an overwhelming choice of ancient monuments and archaeological sites to visit. This is particularly so in Paphos, which has been included in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage sites.
The majority of the population is Greek Cypriot, and they follow the Christian Orthodox religion. The main language spoken is Greek but English is widely spoken, along with German, in the tourist areas.
The unit of currency is the Cyprus pound (current value US$ 0.60) and all major credit cards are accepted. If you like our website, please rate it at

    http://www.mapzones.com/world/europe/cyprus/cultureindex.php
Country Info Cyprus Introduction Cyprus General Data Cyprus Maps Cyprus Culture ... Cyprus Time and Date Cyprus Culture Back to Top When the Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960, 60 percent of Turkish Cypriots lived in villages. The rest lived in the five urban centers of Nicosia (Lefkosa), Famagusta (Gazimagusa), Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos. Few Turkish Cypriots lived in Kyrenia (Girne). During the period of intercommunal conflict, the urban-rural distribution of the Turkish Cypriot population was unclear because of the thousands of refugees living in tents and temporary shelters. After the de facto division of the island in 1974, however, there was a gradual change in the urban-rural ratio. By the late 1980s, 51 percent of the Turkish Cypriot population lived in urban areas. Given the small number of Turkish Cypriots, however, urban centers were not large. As of 1987, the Turkish Cypriot section of Nicosia had only about 38,000 inhabitants, Famagusta 20,000, and Kyrenia 7,100. One reason for increased urbanization was the resettlement program after 1974, which placed refugees from territory controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus in houses previously occupied by Greek Cypriots in the urban areas of Kyrenia, Morphou (Güzelyurt), and Famagusta. Immigrants from Turkey were largely settled in villages.

WELCOME TO JOHN A. STAVOLA'S HOMEPAGE OF SOUTHERN ITALIAN HISTORY , CULTURE, AND GENEALOGY
DUE SICILIE WHY SOUTHERN ITALY? The regions of Puglia and Campania, located in the southern half of the peninsula known as Italy, are where my
ancestors originated from. Before it's annexation by northern Italy it was an
independent country known as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Ruled by the Royal House of Bourbon, from the city of Naples ,this kingdom was
also comprised of the island of Sicily, and the regions of Calabria, Basilicata,
Abruzzi, and Molise. Separated by mountain and seabarriers ,differences
in custom and dialect developed which made this area distinct from the north. Indeed ,these barriers also created distinctions from region to region.
The differences between the southern half of the peninsula and the northern
half are now making themselves more prominent due to separatist movements in the north and now in the south. In time culturally
and politically independent states will reemerge in a federated Europe.
