Golden Laurels / Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein For many years, Baron Eduard von Falz-Fein was a "sports diplomat" who established and cultivated many diverse international relationships for Liechtenstein sports. He rendered particularly outstanding services for the Olympic movement in Liechtenstein. Using his professional and family ties to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), he was the driving force when Liechtenstein, which was not a member of the IOC, participated in the Olympic Games for the first time. An Olympic Committee was founded in Liechtenstein a year before in 1935, where Baron von Falz-Fein served as Vice President.
According to Eduard von Falz-Fein, the results were modest the first few times Liechtenstein participated in the Olympics, but he always believed that even a small country could achieve success through hard work and luck. Today we know that his perseverance has proven to be correct: The gold, silver, and bronze medals that Liechtenstein has won at the Olympics demonstrate this. Baron von Falz-Fein has always been particularly committed to the Olympic movement and idea: "Taking part is everything!" This is underscored in a most impressive way by the fact that he participated in 16 Olympic Games in various functions!

'The Gentleman' comes full cycle
Posted Sun, 15 Jul 2001 Life has come full circle for Juan Antonio Samaranch. In Moscow in 1980, as a little-known Spanish diplomat, he was elected the seventh president of the International Olympic Committee, taking the most powerful job in global sports. Twenty-one years later, now a well-known world figure, Samaranch has returned to Moscow to finish a term marked by unprecedented growth but also by the Olympics' biggest corruption scandal. Committee members will choose his successor in a secret ballot tomorrow, the anniversary of his election and one day before his 81st birthday. The last few months have been full of farewell ceremonies and accolades from Olympic bodies around the world to which Samaranch jokingly refers as "funeral services".

Cara Dunne has medaled in both winter and summer Olympic sports . She is both a skier and a cyclist, and enjoys all types of outdoor activities. Dunne's most remarkable feature in the world of sports, however, is that she has raced through these events blind Retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye, took Dunne's sight away when she was five years old. Two years later, Dunne tried out her first pair of skis. By nine, she was stepping into the starting gate of a slalom, ready to race. Dunne spent eight years on the U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team , but proved that she could tackle the same challenges faced by able-bodied athletes. In a competition in Vail, Colorado, she showed race staff that she could ski the same "downhill" course as champion skiers Billy Kidd and Holly Flanders. Dunne became the first ever diabled skier to perform at an able-bodied event Totally blind skiers must ski with a sighted guide who can direct them down the slope. Most, used to ski with their guide behind them, shouting out directions. Dunne changed all of this after an incident where she skiied toward the timekeeper and knocked him off his chair. She was skiing with her stepfather at the time and they decided to have him ski in front of her. That way she could hear that he had not run into anything and knew that she would not, either. At age eleven, after being ridiculed for her new technique for two years, Dunne was selected to represent the U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team in

    Sanctions trigger dispute
Soccer could be dropped from the Olympic Games this summer if FIFA does not settle a new dispute over doping sanctions with World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee.
At its executive committee Monday in Paris, soccer's world governing body repeated its position that each doping case should be dealt with individually. WADA agrees with that but insists on keeping the right to appeal against any decision taken on doping by FIFA that WADA feels is too lenient.(Reuters) THREE SPORTS- baseball, softball and modern pentathlon - were assured Monday that they would remain on the Olympic program at least through the 2008 Beijing Games. Barring serious ethical violations or failure to uphold anti-doping rules, the International Olympic Committee said no sport would be dropped before the 2012 Games. (AP)

Sydney 2000 Olympics - Sports Menu - Website accessibility
Demonstration showing two options for implementing Website accessibility guidelines in the menu of sports
    By Tom Worthington
http://www.tomw.net.au/2000/sports.html The purpose of this document is to demonstrate methods for implementing Website accessibility guidelines for the Olympic games web site . Specifically methods to provide a text alternative for the menu of sports is shown.
Option 1: ALT Text on the existing image map
In this implementation, a ALT tag with the name of the sport is added to each rectangular region of the existing image map. As an example, alt="Archery" is added to the first area: < AREA shape="rect" coords="1,1,80,12" href=http://www.olympics.com/eng/sports/AR/home.html" alt="Archery" There is no change in the appearance of the menu for most users. However, the effect of including the ALT tags is that a browser can display the text labels in place of the graphics, if required:
Option 2: Simple text menu supplementing or replacing the existing image map
Simple hypertext links are used for the name of each sport: Archery These instructions could be used in a simple list of sports, or in a table as show below. The list has been changed to run alphabetically across the columns, rather than down, to aid braille readers (which read one line of horizontal text at a time). The colour of the table background and text can be changed to match that of the current graphic. However, those colours may be difficult for some people to read:

After Setback, Alexandria Native Is Taking Her Last Shot at the Olympics By Barry Svrluga
    Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 8, 2004; Page D01 When Tina Pic, all of 4 or 5, first had the training wheels removed from her bicycle and tried to wobble through the streets of her native Alexandria, she would fall, and get back up. Fall, and get back up. "Always," said her father, Albert Mayolo. When she finally gravitated to cycling full time, she did so only with serious misgivings, the kind that come from cruising elbow-to-pointy-elbow at 35 or 40 mph over hard, black pavement. "I was like, 'Oh, I don't want to hit the ground,' " she said the other day. Yet, inevitably, she did. One year, she broke her collarbone. Three times. But when Pic climbs back on her bike today for the CapTech Classic in Richmond, she will have, long ago, put behind her the one fall that could have knocked her off her bike for good. At times, she couldn't sleep. By her own admission, she couldn't fly down a hill, couldn't sail into a corner, couldn't train properly or think correctly or handle what had become her professional life. She had always gotten back up before. Would she now?
