Twenty-one athletes attended and proved their skill and ability. One year later, cycling was adopted as an official Special Olympics sport. By the 1995 World Games, over 200 athletes from 25 countries competed in the sport of cycling. There were distances for all levels of athletes, and competition included everything from three-wheel events to 40 kilometer road races. Special Olympics cyclists tone muscles and strengthen their cardiovascular system. Cycling is also an enjoyable leisure activity that offers relaxation and provides an inexpensive form of transportation. Cycling is a summer sport for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Summer Games in May. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event.

Competitive Sports In Spain and the 1992 Olympics.
The development of sports at a primary level of education, with the help of the State and the Autonomous Communities, has resulted in a spectacular advance in competitive sports in Spain. Even the fact that the 1992 Olympics were held in Spain and the medals were won by Spaniards demonstrate the recognition of this new sports' potential and the support it has been given. Spanish sports have produced such figures of international repute as Pedro Delgado and Miguel Indurain in cycling, Angel Niego in motorcycle racing, Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya in motor car rallies, the Sanchez Vicario family and Sergi Bruguera in tennis, Severiano Ballestero in golf, etc. The enumeration would be incomplete if we failed to mention Spain's presence in the many international competitions. Athletism motor racing, basketball, handball, billards, cycling, aerial sports, winter sports, water skiiing, football, gymnastics, hoseback riding, karate, motorcycle racing, motor boat racing, jai alai, swimming, fishing, canoeing, rowing, tae-kwon-do, tennis, sailing, rifle shooting are some of the sports in which Spain stands out in the world championships. In October 1990, the Sports Law was pased which defined the characteristics of professional and amateur sports and established a legal framework for professional clubs.

The men's race is over 17 laps of 13km, a total distance of 221km. The women's race is over 8 laps of 104km. Both feature a mass start with cyclists completing a number of circuits of the course. In both the women's and the men's event, the first cyclist over the line wins.
Individual Time Trial
Cyclists start from a ramp at intervals of 60 seconds and race against the clock with the fastest cyclist winning.
1,000m Sprint
For this event riders need both explosive speed and skill. Lots are drawn for each race and the rider who draws the inside of the track at the start must lead for the first lap. Riders neither want to take the lead nor leave themselves open to attack from behind, which means they often to come to a standstill. Riders must not roll backwards more than 20cm. In the last lap, one rider will normally make a sprint to give a dramatic finish.

IOC OKs two BMX cycling events for 2008 Olympics Xinhuanet 2003-07-01 08:21:42 ¡¡¡¡PRAGUE, June 30 (Xinhuanet) The International Olympic Committee(IOC) said on Monday that their executive board has approved the men's and women's BMX cycling events to be put in the program of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
¡¡¡¡IOC President Jacques Rogge told reporters that the BMX or bikemoto-cross, will be added to the Beijing Games while the total number of athletes for cycling will remain unchanged.
¡¡¡¡This requires that two other cycling existing events be droppedto make room for BMX but Rogge said that the International Cycling Federation had yet to decide which would be dropped.
¡¡¡¡Despite the change in the cycling sport, Rogge said that the total number of events for Beijing Games will remain as usual at 300.
¡¡¡¡Rogge also said that the IOC is still at the stage of defining the criteria to decide which sports remain inside or outside the Olympic program.
¡¡¡¡Currently the IOC, whose program commission has had a couple ofmeetings with the international sport federations, has worked out some basic criteria.

OLYMPIC GAMES, international athletic competition comprising two separate 4-year cycles, the summer Olympics and the winter Olympics. The two cycles alternate in even-numbered years to give the world an Olympic spectacle every two years.
History. top The 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, reflected a changed political landscape: the 172 participating nations and territories included the Unified Team (with athletes from 12 former Soviet republics), a reunited Germany, and South Africa, which was allowed to compete for the first time since 1960. During the 1996 summer games in Atlanta, Ga., a bomb went off at Centennial Olympic Park, killing 2 (1 as a result of a heart attack) and injuring 111 others; the reason for the bombing remains a mystery. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, North and South Korea entered the games under one flag, although they competed as separate countries.
