Cycling Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Bicycles were first invented in the 18th century as a form of transport. The first cycling road race took place in Paris in 1868. The sport has been a mainstay in every Olympic Games since they were revived in 1896 in Athens. Women have competed in cycling since the Los Angeles Games of 1982.
There are three Olympic Cycling disciplines, all of which include both men's and women's events: road cycling, track cycling and mountain biking. First came the road race. It became the rage in the late 19 th century after the development of the bicycle and before the invention of the automobile. It was followed by track racing and much later came mountain biking. The sport's popularity in the pre-automobile age landed it in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. That inaugural Olympic road race was held on the classic Marathon course, with riders completing two laps covering a total of 87 kilometers. Cycling road 1896 Road Race (endurance). In the men's portion, competitors cover a distance of 230 to 250km - women cover a distance of 100 to 140km in their competition. Cyclists in each class start together and the winner is the one who finishes first.

By Compiled from Times wires Terrorist threat downplayed SYDNEY, Australia Officials reassured the world Saturday that next month's Olympics are safe from terrorist attack after a possible plot against the country's only nuclear reactor was exposed. In the first major security scare for the Games, New Zealand police in March discovered evidence of a possible plan to attack the reactor, in suburban Sydney. The information was found during an operation in Auckland against a suspected organized crime ring with links to Afghanistan. Australian officials were quick to say there was no direct evidence of a terrorist threat. New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff also downplayed any threat: "There is nothing that suggests there is a threat on the ground other than somebody had marked the reactor and access to it in a notebook." The Australians expressed confidence in the Games' massive security operation, headed by the New South Wales state police and including Australian military forces and international intelligence services. International Olympic Committee chairman Juan Antonio Samaranch said he was not worried.
