Cycling began as a full training and competitive sport in Westmoreland County in May 2000. Cycling is unique in Special Olympics sports training because the families are invited to participate during each training session. All equipment is provided including bikes, helmets, and water bottles. By participating in cycling, the athletes are learning a sport that they can not only compete in, but also one that they can enjoy when spending time with their family and friends at home or on vacation. Athletes begin training with sessions in bicycle and riding safety and becoming familiar with the equipment. Controlled course training session are then conducted covering basic riding skills such as steering, braking, turning, scanning, passing on the left and street crossings. Training sessions are held two days per week for three months.
In 2002, the cycling program conducted a combined 440 hours of athlete training with 15 athletes supported by 20 volunteers who gave 520 hours of their time to work with the athletes.
Competitions held include events in figure eight and slalom obstacle courses, as well as 100
