Some dream of the Olympic tournament joining the four majors to comprise a 'Golden Slam' but for the majority of players the Games' reputation is diminished by the fact that it carries no prize money or world ranking points. The sport was one of the original events in the first modern Games in 1896, but the definition of professionalism, squabbles over rules and a clash of dates with Wimbledon meant the 1924 competition became the last for 64 years. It was Philippe Chatrier, the International Tennis Federation president, who lobbied for the sport's return. In 1968 and 1984 tennis was a non-medal demonstration competition at the Games.

Olympics History Origin Of Modern Olympic Games Inflaming the inspiration and enthusiasm from the Ancient Olympic Games , which were conducted every four years between 776 BC and 393 AD in Olympia, Greece until forbidden by Emperor of Greece in 393 AD, the Modern Olympic Games were started in 1896 at Athens, Greece under the initiation and leadership of a French educationalist Baron Pierre de Coubertin. DISCIPLINES Archery: Like so many other sports Archery is a game of Egyption origin. It originated probably in the pre-historic period through primitive men, who used it either for self - defence or for food by killing animals. In the later centuries men used bows. Ancient Hindu Epics, tell of the heroic wars where Lord Rama and Arjuna, to quote a few, played important roles in the field of Archer which gradually turned into a discipline in the Modern Olympics. Although Archery featured in the Modern Olympics in 1900 at Paris, 1904 at St. Luis, 1908 at London and 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, it was discontinued till the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

Cycling Olympic cycling includes both individual and team competitions over different types of terrain. Olympic cycling has three distinct categories: "road racing," "track racing," and "mountain biking." Track events occur on steeply banked tracks called "velodromes." Road racing is racing on paved roadways. Mountain bike racing takes place off-road. Click a link to

The Races
In time trials, competitors race against the clock to record the fastest time. In this all-out race, a cyclist is said to have "hit the wall" when his or her legs can no longer pedal at a rapid pace. Road races are mass start events that take place on public roads. Endurance is the main factor in road racing. Riding in the "slipstream," the current of air created by the leader, decreases wind resistance and can cut a cyclist's effort by as much as 20 percent. This is also called "drafting" and can be utilized in all cycling events.

T he Atlanta Olympic Games proved to be the most successful non-boycotted Games for the United States. The U.S. captured medals in mountain biking (1) and track cycling (2) and posted eight top-10 finishes. Marty Nothstein captured a silver medal in the men's match sprint, while Erin Hartwell won the silver in the kilometer time trial. That marked the second successive Olympic Games medal for Hartwell. Susan DeMattei collected a bronze tin the women's cross-country in mountain biking's Olympic debut. It was a far cry from the Los Angeles Games in 1984, when cyclists had just eight events including the first-ever women's contest the road race. Still, that Olympiad proved to be a catalyst for American cycling, giving the sport's followers added enthusiasm for its future after Atlanta. The 2000 Sydney Olympic Games will see the additional of four Olympic events to increase the number of cycling medal events to 18. Cycling has been a part of the Olympics since the start of the modern movement, with five events contested in Athens a century ago. The United States won its first medal at Paris in 1900, as John Henry Lake took the bronze medal in the sprint. Four years later, the U.S. team swept all the medals in seven events in the St. Louis Olympics. Eight years later, in Stockholm, the U.S. road team won two bronze medals in what would be the final podium appearances for Americans until 1984. But once again on home soil, U.S. riders piled up nine medals in Los Angeles in 1984, including the first women's medal awarded, as Wisconsin's Connie Carpenter won the road race. Interest in the sport skyrocketed with the number of licensed racers jumping more than 5000 by the end of 1985. Today there are 63,600 riders licensed to race in the United States, combining all disciplines.

Cycling History in Ethiopia
It is believed that the Italians introduced cycling to Ethiopia during the 1930s. They also formed the first clubs in the country and organized competitions, which were initially restricted to their local Italian community inhabitants in Addis Abeba but later on included Ethiopians as well.
As bicycles became the main means of transportation, the number of riders grew, and subsequentlyt, the popularity of the sport.
Kassa Fedil , who won numerous tournaments during the 1938-1941 seasons, was a member of the St. George football Club and the first Ethiopian cyclist hero. It was said that Kassa was such a dominating force and extremely confident cyclist, that he would be eating breakfast at home while a competition is in progress, and would still beat the pack to win the tournament. Other top cyclists at the time included Mulugetta Kassa Kassaye Resom and Tesfaye Amde-Michael

Scotland's Olympic Medals In the Olympic Games held in Sydney in September 2000, Scotland's athletes won nine gold and silver medals (and no bronze), a number not equalled since 1912 and the first gold medals since 1988. And the Olympics 2000 certainly proved to be a big improvement over 1996 in Atlanta - when Scottish competitors, participating as always as part of the UK team, won only one bronze. Here is the complete list of Scottish Olympic medal winners since 1900. In this context, "Scottish" mainly means born in Scotland (though Eric Liddell of "Chariot's of Fire" fame is included, even though he was born in China, of Scottish parents).

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

This is in no way a complete list of Cycling History but a list of events that I feel helped shape cycling as it relates to mountain biking. During my research I found some conflicting dates as well as info (I guess due to their love of riding rather than writing, brain shaking non-suspended downhills and the fact that helmets were not the norm) so I went with the item that most agreed on. I'm still researching and history is still being made so check back once in awhile for an update.

History and Development of the National Talent Search Program 1988 to 1994 In 1988, a historic talent identification rowing project was instigated by Dr Allan Hahn and colleagues at the AIS. This rowing program was an outstanding success, fast-tracking representatives to the 1992 and 1996 Olympics Games, including Atlanta gold medallist Megan Still. Inspired, a number of sports including cycling, athletics and canoeing took it upon themselves to systematically look for talented athletes in their sport. In 1993, a track cycling talent identification project unearthed three Junior World Champions in South Australian secondary schools. They included Alayna Burns who has since won Commonwealth Games gold, and competed for Australia in the track cycling team at the 2000 Olympic Games. Alayna placed 7 th in the 3000m individual pursuit, and 9 th in the 25km points race. However, these programs at the time were labour intensive, involving repeated mass screening in schools. In many instances, a number of sports conducted similar tests resulting in much duplication and drain on school resources and time. The implementation of TALENT SEARCH in 1994 alleviated many of these problems as it was the first coordinated, national effort between sports and necessitated testing students only once.

The Girl's Game - ABC Radio with Amanda Smith, 29 September 2000
Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history. There are those who have dominated, like the great Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who became the first woman to win four gold medals in a single Games, and Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union, whose nine gold, five silver and four bronze over the course of three Olympiads remains a record for men and women. There are those who are renown for their "firsts" like Nadia Comanici who became the first Olympic gymnast male or female to score a perfect 10 in competition and American Joan Benoit who won the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984. Women athletes in many countries have historically made a disproportionately high contribution to the medals count at the Games. This has certainly been true for Australia. In certain Olympic sports, particularly swimming and track and field, Australian women have been outstanding. For example in track and field up to and including Atlanta, since 1948 women have constituted just over 30% of the track and field team but have won 75% of all medals and 11 out of 14 gold medals.
