[c] The National Cycle Archive was established in 1990 by the Cyclists' Touring Club with funds from a bequest by Frank Whitt. Its primary aim is the preservation of records relating to cycles and cycling. The National Cycle Archive Fund is administered by the trustees of the Cycle Touring and Countryside Trust. The archive collection is housed at the Modern Records Centre, University of Warwick Library. The National Cycle Archive comprises books, serials and records deposited by many cycling bodies and individuals. The books and magazines are catalogued on to the University Library Catalogue. They can be found at: http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk/search . Researchers can search by author, title or keyword. A subject search citing Cyclists' Touring Club, National Cycle Archive, or National Cycle Museum will give details of the material belonging to each of these bodies. Most magazines and journals have been placed in one series in order to avoid duplication. Deposits of cycle catalogues and cycle accessories' catalogues, press cuttings, photographs, ephemera, etc., have been placed in deposits dedicated to their class of record, but the records have in general been kept as separate entities, with their own distinguishing references. A brief description of the archives follows. For further details see:

Clara Hughes finishes sixth in Olympic cycling time trial SYDNEY (CP) Canadian cyclist Clara Hughes said goodbye to road racing with a ride she ranked among her best.
She didn't add another Olympic medal to the two bronze she won at the 1996 Games, but what she did to finish sixth in the women's time trial Saturday filled her with pride.
Hughes, weakened by a cold that wouldn't go away, pushed herself to a threshold of pain beyond what most humans can endure.
"I'm so satisfied with what I did today," Hughes said. "I've had some pretty poor preparation because of some health problems.
"I've felt so bad in training. But everyone kept saying to me, 'Clara, you can do it, you can suffer more than anyone else.'

Team History
Formed in 1960, in Speedway, Indiana, the Speedway Wheelmen is the oldest cycling team in Indiana. The team started with fifteen members and has seen its ranks swell to as many as one hundred. Nearly all of the cycling teams and clubs that have formed in Central Indiana since then have had ties back to the Speedway Wheelmen. Cycling tradition in Indiana has to include IU's Little 500 and the movie "Breaking Away". Did you know that Dave Blase, a Speedway Wheelmen, was the Real "Dave Stoller", on which the movie "Breaking Away" is based? The Speedway Wheelmen regularly produce high caliber cyclists, placing both locally and nationally, wearing our colors of orange and blue. Erin Hartwell got his start as a Speedway Wheelmen and has medalled in the 87, 89, 90, and 94 National Championships and also the 92 and 96 Olympic Games!

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

There were 245 athletes registered for the inaugural 1896 Games at Athens, but 164 of them were Greek. They and 81 other athletes, representing 13 other countries, competed in the 43 events. The program included nine sports: cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, track and field, weightlifting, and wrestling. (Rowing and sailing races had also been planned, but they were canceled because of bad weather.) Most of the foreign athletes paid their own way, and there were no standards of eligibility. Some of the competitors, in fact, were tourists who just happened to be visiting Greece at the time and decided to enter on the spur of the moment. Germany and France had the largest representation, with 19 athletes each, followed by the United States with 14. There were no national teams as such, but the Boston Athletic Association brought a contingent of athletes, as did the German Gymnastics Society, the Union of French Athletic Associations, and the British Athletic Association.
