Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History CYCLING The first recorded bicycle race was a 1,200-meter event held on May 31, 1868, in St.-Cloud Park, near Paris. It was won by an Englishman, James Moore. Coincidentally, the first English race was staged in Hendon the following day. In 1869, Moore won the first point-to-point race, from Rouen to Paris, a distance of about 83 miles. During the 1870s, many bicycle clubs were established in the United States. They started as social clubs, organizing mass rides, but most of them soon began offering races. The first recorded race was held on May 24, 1878, in Boston, and others followed quickly. In 1880, a group of clubs formed the League of American Wheelmen (LAW) at a meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. By 1898, the organization had 102,600 members. The main purpose of the LAW was to promote recreational cycling by lobbying for better roads and favorable laws, but the organization also served as the governing body for amateur racing. The International Cyclist Association was founded in 1892 by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. It was replaced in 1900 by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is still the international governing body for racing.

Baron de Coubertin's dream of reinventing the Games was one he had coveted since 1892 - two years later the official announcement was made and Athens chosen as the site. Baron Pierre de Coubertin invited countries from all over the world to attend the first of the new Olympics in Athens.

What she did carry with her was the satisfaction of improving her personal record and finishing among the top five athletes in her second-best sport. For the Wisconsin native who has moved to Utah in preparation for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics, Witty enjoyed not only her first exposure to the Summer Games but being an underdog in the sport of cycling. It's a far cry from speedskating, where Witty was a favorite in the 1,000- and 1,500-meter speedskating events (she finished with silver and bronze medals in 1998) and remembers being stared down at the starting line by opponents wanting to play mind games with her. Still, Witty wasn't without attention in the days leading up to the race, and the pressure and anxieties started to pester her. The night before her event, she left the Olympic Village and the athletes' party-on attitude in favor of a hotel and better prospects of sleeping.

Brownielocks and The 3 Bears Present Cartoon Fun and The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games The Nemean Games The Isthmian Games The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.
