To Guide Entry
For several years the City of New Haven has been using the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills as a criteria for evaluating its students. Each year on the Reading Section of the test, students show a deficiency in the areas of generalizations and inference. This deficiency shows an inability on the part of students to comprehend the “whole” of what they are reading. Their understanding is limited to the literal and the simple recollection of factual details. One way to improve students’ ability in the areas of forming generalizations and inferences is by exposing students to the elements of the short story. This unit is designed to be used by English and Reading teachers in the seventh and eighth grades. We have selected classic short stories which are available at a lower reading level as well as their original form. Each story can be used with high achieving students in its original form and is available in a form with a readability level of third, fourth or fifth grade for use with lower achieving students. All stories mentioned in this unit are available in books which are currently being used in the New Haven School System.

To Guide Entry
It is very difficult to teach an English course amidst TV, video games, and other inducements to passivity which entice our students away from communication and thought. Equally distressing is the realization that many of “our children” fail to appreciate the basic freedom that literature offers. How liberating it is to be able to choose a plot, a mood, a genre; and readers are able to choose not only what they will consider, but when they will do so and how. Unfortunately many of our students feel that they have few choices in life; I have seen far too many depressed teen-agers of late. “What’s the use?!” haunts teachers in subtle and not so subtle refrains. We are not psychiatrists or social workers, and therefore cannot “treat” our students; we are , however, teachers, and should recognize the psycho-sociological trends of our time and place. When young people simply “give up” or fail to see choices which are available to them, they have ceased to be “students”. The acceptance of responsibility or “free will” is prerequisite to learning. It seems to me that the discovery of “freedom in reading” leads to individualism and growth potential. We must promote reading and the notion that reading fosters individualism, for if we fail or “give up”, (the futures of many individuals and/or) the future of the “student” is in jeopardy.

Mrs. Zakowski's Kinder"garden" Come into our Kindergarten. We have a full day program in a school that has alot of old charm. Our corner room has a huge tree just outside the window. Often when I look out, I feel like we are in a tree house since the classroom is located on the second level. Hope you have a nice visit and if you are a teacher, make sure that you visit the Themes and Book Ideas area. There are about 20 book ideas for early childhood educators. Our class has a pet hamster so I developed a Pet Detective Webquest that I hope you will visit. I'm very happy to be beginning another year. I have a new online project with 21 participants. It should be lots of fun!!!
