142. The Vietnam War: A Teacher's Resource
Resource site for high school teachers provides historical background and curriculum ideas.

WELCOME TO
The Vietnam War: past and present
a resource for high school history teachers
Created and developed by Brian Sims. Last updated on May 26, 1998.
INTRODUCTION: As a watershed event in modern American history, the Vietnam War is an integral part of America today. Indeed, its impact far transcended southeast Asia and the men, women, and nations that participated there it also altered the political, economic, social, cultural, and ideological landscapes of the United States. We still live within the shadows of its legacy. The Vietnam War, therefore, is an essential event to cover in the curriculum of a high school American history class. PURPOSE: It is with this idea in mind that "The Vietnam War: past and present" has been designed, for few events have had such a profound effect on America. In addition, as a former teacher, I understand the many challenges that instructors face in trying to cover recent US history at the end of the academic year. This web page, therefore, is meant to give teachers a fast and easy way to learn about the war, as well as ideas for how the internet can be used to teach it. It is my belief that the expanding nature of the world wide web, coupled with the fact that many Vietnam veterans are actively involved in developing their own war related sites, makes the internet a vital resource for understanding Vietnam both as it happened at the time, and as it lives on today. So, whether you are a new teacher looking for lesson plan ideas, or a wise old sage trying to enhance an already existing syllabus, this web page has been built with you in mind.

Teachers can use journal writing to meet specific goals, or the purpose can be wide open. Some teachers check journal writing and work on polishing skills; others use journals as the one "uncorrected" form of writing that students produce. Some teachers provide prompts to help students begin their writing; others leave decisions about the direction and flow of student journals up to the students. Education World talked with teachers who use daily journal writing in their classrooms. Included: Writing motivators that work from teachers who use them! Who and What Is A.T.A.M.A. A.T.A.M.A. is a democratic martial arts organization of students and instructors of all ranks, from all styles, seeking to improve the level of competency within the martial arts through a mutual exchange of knowledge. Dedicated to the belief that proficiency in the doing of an art is not synonymous with proficiency in the teaching of an art, A.T.A.M.A. has created an ever-changing learning environment in which children, students, and instructors learn what is best, from the best, in martial arts today. Through the sharing of relevant techniques, combined with a superb educational curriculum, A.T.A.M.A.'s program is a unique supplement to your art, intended to help students to become better instructors, and instructors to become better teachers. Certification Program A.T.A.M.A.'s curriculum of subjects and seminars are designed to offer each member instructor an opportunity to receive certification at five separate levels, each dependent on completion of a prescribed course of instruction. Certification is for a renewable three year period, and is specifically designed to encourage each member's continuing participation in the learning, in the sharing, and in the teaching of martial arts knowledge.

By BETH WILSON
bwilson@amarillonet.com
The key to testing success lies with expert and curriculum-support teachers. The Amarillo and Canyon independent school districts have put money and resources behind this belief, with Amarillo paying stipends to lead teachers and Canyon hiring two teachers for full-time curriculum support. Both districts are preparing for a higher-level test, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, which will replace the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills in 2003-2004. Devia Cearlock, curriculum-support teacher at Palo Duro High and social studies learning team leader for AISD, said the state curriculum has been divided into six-week sections, so all teachers cover the same material in the same time.

Back to List of papers How do Preservice Teachers use Concept Maps to Organize Their Curriculum Content Knowledge? Brian Ferry, John Hedberg and Barry Harper University of Wollongong Abstract This paper reports on preservice teachers use of a concept mapping tool to create and modify concept maps about science related curriculum content knowledge. The preservice teachers who used the tool were planning science-based instruction that would be delivered to an elementary school class. Data gathered from interviews, journals and analysis of the concept maps constructed showed how the preservice students used the concept mapping tool to construct their curriculum content knowledge in the form of more powerful integrated patterns. It was also found that the process of concept map construction enhanced preservice teacher skills in planning instruction. Introduction Six uses of concept maps were identified by White and Gunstone (1992) and these were: to explore understanding of a limited aspect of the topic; to check whether learners understand the purpose of instruction; to see whether learners can make links between concepts; to identify changes that learners make in relationships between concepts; to find out which concepts are regarded as key ones; and to promote learner discussion. The findings from this study support the contention that the planning of instruction is an additional use of concept maps, with the process likely to be more important that the final product. Retention and Student Achievement
The Question
How effective is retention as a strategy to improve student academic achievement?
The Context
Florida and Georgia have instituted third-grade retention programs statewide, and New York City recently joined Chicago and a handful of other cities and counties with retention policies. In Chicago, students are tested in the third, sixth, and eighth grades. Students not achieving the minimum cut score (set at approximately the 20th percentile of national norms, or from one to almost two years below grade level, depending on the grade being tested) participate in a summer bridge program designed to help them achieve passing scores on the tests. Students who still fail to achieve the required cut score at the end of the summer bridge program are ultimately retained.
The Details
Jenny Nagaoka and Melissa Roderick conducted the study highlighted in this issue of ResearchBrief (see below To determine the effectiveness of the retention strategy, the authors first looked at the extent to which retained students improved their test scores. They then established three comparison analyses:
  • Comparing the academic growth of students in grades 3 and 6 who just missed the standard to those students who just passed the cutoff.
