B C D ... Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute Foreword Since the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute began its work in 1978, hundreds of teaching units have been prepared by dozens of teachers on scores of themes. The 155 volumes containing the teaching units are a treasure trove of ideas and procedures for teaching English, History, Social Studies, the Languages, the Arts, Mathematics, and Science in elementary, middle, and high schools. A list of these volumes appears on the Directory of Volumes page of this website. The very bulk of the material, however, made it somewhat tiresome to search through all the volumes to unearth the gems of special interest to the searcher. Therefore, in the summer of l985, James Vivian, Director of the Institute, commissioned the preparation of a topical index to all units written from 1978 through 1985. In 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 the units written more recently were added. The result of that original commission and the subsequent updates follow over the next pages. First a defining word or two and then a suggestion about using the index.

Table of Contents About Meridian Resources Archive WebQuests in the Middle School Curriculum: Promoting Technological Literacy in the Classroom Kenneth Lee Watson University of Virginia "…technological literacy must include a wide range of opportunities for students to interact with a variety of tools and resources in order to develop a level of competence that will allow them to use technology effectively and productively in the workplace." Introduction O n January 27, 1998, the president's State of the Union Address (Clinton, 1998) included a ten point plan calling for, among other things, to "connect every classroom and library to the Internet by the year 2000 and help students become technologically literate." The president's focus on the use of technology in the classroom setting and promoting technological literacy among our students echoes the concern of many educators. Raizen, Sellwood, Todd, and Vickers (1995) suggest that technological literacy must include a wide range of opportunities for students to interact with a variety of tools and resources in order to develop a level of competence that will allow them to use technology effectively and productively in the workplace. Over the course of the last 20 years, educators have been inundated with new programs and methods aimed at integrating new technologies with classroom curriculum. Many discussions have centered around attempts to determine the most effective uses of technology in the classroom. From these discussions additional questions continue to be generated. How can we harness this technology for educative purposes? How can this technology enhance middle school education? What are the most effective approaches to integrating technology with curriculum so that it provides the greatest benefit for students?

Family and History Linked Through Time
The Learner
"Tell me and I may forget.
Show me and I may remember.
Involve me and I will understand."
In recent years genealogy research has become an ever increasing experience that many have taken on as never seen before. This quest, to find more about our own past, brings us to quickly understand that the search for "Family History" is not only unique in itself but connects us to the "World History" of the World Wide Community at every point in our research. Questions such as, "Why did my great grandparents immigrate from the old world?, become much clearer as our research slowly links our Family History to the 'Clearances' of Scotland, the 'Potato Famines' of Ireland or perhaps to the pains of a distant 'War' What better way to motivate students in the study of history than by having them become part of that history through the research of their own family! As a teacher, how would I go about creating a genealogy unit that would assist myself and my students in linking family roots and history? What better person to work on trying to help others in researching their projects on the net than that of a teacher. MacLinks would like to thank Virginia Conklin, a teacher librarian, for her work and continued support on our educational website section. The information that follows has been collated to assist the teacher, student, parent and yes, even the beginning family researcher in locating and understanding about family roots. Please note; as time goes on this list will be added too, as more research is done on this topic area. If you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to contact
