REVIEW:
"The Basic Cozy Grammar Course"
by Marie Rackham Although grammar has been relegated to the dusty back shelf in many schools, it is an integral part of effective language usage. This gentle, quiet set of easy to understand lessons brings it back out to the light, and into sharp focus. The author/narrator, a former English teacher, brings you to her lovely river retreat for the 27 short-but-sweet lessons on two video tapes. Good explanations, examples and practice, with the ability to rewind and repeat that video is so handy for, make this an excellent course. The lessons are not too simplistic, but take a very basic path, which makes them suitable for youth or adult. The included workbook reinforces the lessons in a clear and concise way, and offers review, tests and answer key. There is none of the flash that most recent kid oriented stuff is so prone to. The author encourages the student to hand copy the sentences in the exercises, in order to improve eye/hand coordination. This serves to preserve the reproducible workbook/study guide for use with other students. The course is also well suited for use in ESL studies.

Homeschooling Resources for Parents and Students
A small but growing number of school-aged children will not routinely spend time in a school classroom this year. Instead, these children engage in HOME SCHOOLINGthat is, they will pursue learning at home or elsewhere in the community. There is no one way to do it. One family may begin with opening ceremonies to signal the start of the daily routine and follow a scheduled curriculum. Another family may opt for child-led learning, where parents provide help as the child expresses interest in a topic. Usually parents provide supervision and help, but most children assume increasing responsibility for choosing and carrying out projects as they mature. Most families involved in home schooling organize activities with other families. Some children spend part of their time at a local public or private school, or a nearby college.

E xcellence I n E ducation I n O ur H ome. Welcome to our home education links collection! We homeschooled from April, 1985 to Sept 1998. We found the Charlotte Mason method to be the best for us. We are dyslexic, and used a multi-sensory approach to our literature core. We had many excursions down side trails, experimenting with different curriculum as we learned education truly is an "Atmosphere, a Discipline, and a Life". If you are interested in Charlotte Mason, look HERE . CM is often considered an "Unschooling" method, so you may be interested in those sites. Of course, the catalogs are full of fun projects and good books too- so look around! Don't forget to check out our booklist to see what we have used and liked best. The Importance of Following a Strict School Curriculum (A Satire)
by Jan Hunt, reprinted with permission It has come to my attention that there are actually some children out there who want to "home school" and don't understand the value of following a school curriculum. Here is an open letter to any child who feels that the school curriculum is not important: There can be no question that following a strict curriculum helps to prepare you for adult life. I, for one, am grateful to have followed a strict school curriculum, as the information which I learned in my classes has proven to be so useful in my life. For example, I had two years of Latin, and although I hated it at the time, it has been immensely useful for solving crossword puzzles. And such topics as solid geometry can come in very handy if you decide to become a geometry teacher. And of course, there is always the slight chance that you will become one of the handful of scientists who will actually use geometry in your career, and why wait until college to learn it? You wouldn't want to be behind the other two guys who made that career choice. Although curriculums have developed over many years, and enormous effort has been put into their preparation, still there may be just a few skills and interests which you may find were not covered in your particular school. After all, they can only cover so much material in 11,000 hours!

http://www.eagleacademy.org/robinson.htm
The Robinson Curriculum
A Description
If you could only have one home school resource, this curriculum should be the one. This CD-ROM includes a complete set of texts for grades 1-12, books you can print yourself with your personal computer. The curriculum was developed by an oustanding scientist and his wife for their six home-schooled children with the help of their co-workers. The curriculum is designed to be self-taught and to prepare children for the modern world of science and technology. In addition to a course of study and some special examinations, this curriculum requires a large number of very high quality books - many of which are currently out of print or otherwise hard to locate. A simple book list provided here or by them would, therefore, be difficult to utilize. The Robinson's have placed thousands of pages of the books they use to home school into computer image format for CD-ROM distribution. Included software allows any family with a modern personal computer with a CD-ROM drive to print copies of all books that they cannot otherwise obtain. These printed books are identical to the originals, since they scanned the original pages.
Eagle's Evaluation
This is a brilliant idea! All home schooling families will benefit from this library of classic texts on CD-ROM. No matter what other materials you are using for home schooling, the Robinson Curriculum will prove valuable. If you plan on living out of North America or in a rural area without a library, this CD-ROM collection of books is essential. Think of it as a library you can fit in less than a shoe box of space. Eagle Academy highly commends Dr. Robinson for the work he's done. We plan on integrating the books Dr. Robinson has made available into Eagle Academy courses at all levels. You can visit
