Monday, January 26, 2004 Giving to Get
“It’s not like they can dig their cars out themselves!” said freshman, Dominic Marcella. His friend, Dan Carter, added, “And the longer they leave it there, it’ll just turn to ice. I mean, what if they have to go somewhere?” A theatrical reenactment commences. Carter is a helpless old woman, and if she can’t get the ice off her 1996 Buick Radmaster, she’s going to miss ‘senior swim at the Y’; it only comes once a week. Fortunately, Marcella, the friendly neighbor, saves the day with a snow shovel. When school is finally cancelled due to the weather students have a chance to catch up on their sleep and hand out for the day. Dominic Marcella and Dan Cater find time to do that, plus they make an effort to help some of the elderly in their community by digging their cars out of the snow. “One lady was so happy she wanted to let us borrow her car!” said Marcella. A definition of the word community might be that people who live and work together go beyond themselves to help those in need. By getting involved with child care, food and clothing drives, or by joining clubs geared toward community, a lot of students at HCRHS are giving back to the community with respect for what it has offered them. Most of the students interviewed were getting involved and realizing, as an afterthought, that giving back can help you out as far as college applications and character development go. Some students, however, felt community service to be an obligation- something you have to do to get out of trouble or into college.

... Contact Us Painting isn’t an aesthetic operation; it is a form of magic designed as a mediator between this strange, hostile world and us, a way of seizing the power by giving form to our terrors as well as our desires. When I came to that realization, I knew I had found my way . Picasso’s words about painting, but which can also be applied to all visual and performing art, couldn’t be more timely as we try to find meaning amidst our current events. As an AFTA artist, I have been privileged to teach art to groups of seniors; they help me keep my life in perspective. Since I am given creative freedom and encouragement, I am able to try different modalities. I learn and re-learn " to trust the process" as the seniors teach me what they are capable of accomplishing. It is often amazing how far they can go when given the opportunity. It is moving to see the imagination bring a vitality and healing to seniors with a diminished capacity to reason. As an expressive therapist, I like to enter into the world of the imagination with participants. We have written fairy tales as well as poetry, and have used a variety of art materials. Aside from teaching a new skill, my goals are to build self -esteem, enable the seniors to have control by giving them choices, and to encourage group interaction. In some groups we have shared tears, but more often there is a sense of play. In one group, a woman was talking out loud to no one in particular. I asked what she said and she answered, "Oh I’m just talking to my painting." I replied, "What does the painting answer?" She looked at me and laughed, "Honey, if that painting answers, I’m out of here!"

Today, art most often refers to the visual arts, specifically painting and sculpture, photography, digital art, and poster art.

Art
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Art originally was the processes of man, and as such was synonymous with science . Nowadays it can be seen in essence the foremost expression of human creativity . As difficult to define as it is to evaluate, given that each individual artist chooses the rules and parameters that guide her or his work, it can still be said that art is the process and the product of choosing a medium , a set of rules for the use of that medium, and a set of values that determine what deserves to be expressed through that medium, in order to convey either a belief, an idea, a sensation, or a feeling in the most effective way possible for that medium. (See definition of art Artists, deliberately or not, work under the influence of other artists of the past and present, and much of the development of individual artists deals with finding structured principles for how to express certain ideas through various kinds of symbolism. For example Vasily Kandinsky famously developed his used of color in painting , through a system of stimulus response, where over time he gained an understanding of the emotions that can be evoked by color and combinations of color.
