Consortium for the Arts Spring 2004 Calendar Ant Farm 1968-1978 The Consortium for the Arts is pleased to co-sponsor an array of public programs and film screenings in conjunction with the exhibit Ant Farm 1968-1978 organized by the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. On July 4, 1975, in the parking lot of San Francisco's Cow Palace, two artists, Curtis Schreier and Doug Michels, outfitted like astronauts, crawled into the Phantom Dream Car - a customized 1959 Cadillac Biarritz complete with interior video communication - and drove it full speed through a pyramid of flaming TVs. Media Burn , a spectacular performance, and later a widely distributed videotape, was a literal collision of two American icons: the car and the television set. It remains one of the most celebrated (and oft-imitated) pieces by the endlessly enterprising collective Ant Farm - radical architects, video, performance, and installation artists, and above all, visionaries and cultural commentators. The first museum retrospective of Ant Farm at the Berkeley Art Museum offers an intriguing look into Conceptual Art and the ethos of the late sixties and seventies, a time that has proved to be seminal for succeeding generations of adventuresome artists.

Governor Awards $765,000 in Arts Council FY 05 Grants Governor Mike Rounds is helping the arts in South Dakota “By nurturing the arts, our state will continue to advance economic development and will continue to be an inviting and interesting place for our citizens and for visitors,” Rounds said. The Governor noted that the grant money he awarded this spring will generate over $10 million in local matching funds and spending. Spring State Arts Council grants are awarded to individual artists, traditional arts apprenticeships, arts organizations, state-wide service organizations, schools, and a variety of art projects on the local level. These awards help make possible projects like the Black Hills Chamber Music Society and the South Dakota Art Museum, as well as assisting individual artists, community theatres, art councils, and community art projects across the state. The South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) received 170 requests for FY 05 grants in March and April plus requests for 230 weeks of AISC residencies. Statistics from the last two years are well ahead of figures from five years ago. “We have a tremendous amount of interest in the arts in
