Book Preface
Needed: A Science of Sustainability When world leaders and delegates from 190 nations met in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002 for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, a host of urgent issues filled their agenda. Among the pressing problems they debated were global climate change, freshwater shortages, dwindling forests, biodiversity losses, food insecurity, over-exploited fish stocks, emergent ecological diseases, dependence on fossil fuels, and the role of social, political and economic factors in environmental degradation. Underlying these issues was a division between the world's rich citizens, who want to protect nature and the 80 percent of the world's population living in the poorest countries who insist that they can't be concerned with safeguarding natural resources until they achieve simple survival. This division was highlighted by South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki who said in his opening comments: "A global human society based on poverty for many and prosperity for a few, characterized by islands of wealth, surrounded by a sea of poverty is unsustainable. The tragic result of this is the avoidable increase in human misery and ecological degradation."

The Environment: A Global Challenge
"The Environment: A Global Challenge" is a comprehensive site providing information on many aspects of the environment. There are 400 articles in twelve content sections [ Current Events, Economics, Environmental Problems, Health Concerns, History, Organizations, Science, Statistics and World Outlook]. Articles are interlinked and multimedia and links to outside information often accompany the text. Integrated into each content section and spread out through various other sections are many interactive features, such as simulations, interviews, streaming multimedia, a scientific experimentation center, and systems for adding links and new content enable visitors to experience what they are learning about. Educators can easily and instantly involve their entire class in the site by creating accounts in our Classroom Connection database. Editor's Annual Report for 2003
Dear Colleagues and Friends, Welcome to a New Year and new opportunities for the expansion of Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics (ESEP)! The year 2004 promises to be an exciting one for the journal, with many avenues open for exploration in our efforts to expand ESEP's readership base and attract new authors and manuscripts. The number of submitted manuscripts continues to rise, but to contribute effectively to current discussion in the field and to achieve our desired growth, we as the Editorial Board must lead the way in this development. Many thanks for your previous and continued efforts in these endeavours. I look forward to meeting this challenge with you! This report addresses the following points:

DESCRIPTION: Manta rays are commonly seen along the Kona Coast and have been a major component of the local dive industry for many years. Despite their abundance in Hawaii, their large size and pelagic nature have made them difficult to study. Consequently, little is known about their basic ecology. Fisheries for manta rays in Indonesia, Baja, and the Philippines have increased our need for information on their population structure and habitat use. Tim Clark, a Ph.D. student at the University of Hawai’i, has been studying manta rays for over ten years. He will be presenting findings from his research on the site fidelity and habitat use of mantas in Hawaii, on the global population structure of manta rays, and on conservation issues affecting mantas today. FREE public education presentation from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.

    Why is this site different?
This isn't a typical science site. It's actually based on a four-credit graduate course at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the finest universities in the world.
    • The site is packed with colorful photos, animations, maps, charts, graphs-even a musical excerpt-with links to trustworthy resources.
    • The site is a research and classroom teaching tool. It is quickly applicable to a wide range of subjects and lessons that you have planned for your classroom.
    • It offers actions that you and your students can take together to make a difference in your own health and the health of the world around you.
    Why is GECOH special?
The site shows how changes to the environment can affect human health. We all know that disasters loom large in the news these days: West Nile virus. Flash floods. Extreme storms. Heat waves. Hole in the ozone layer. Epidemics. El Nino. Global warming. Biodiversity. Urban sprawl. Air quality alerts. You may find yourself asking hard questions. What is really happening, why does it matter, and what can we do about it? This site will help you and your students see how events on the other side of the world or in your own backyard can matter. How this project became a reality.

Mass Extinction Underway, Majority of Biologists Say
    Washington Post
Tuesday, April 21, 1998 Page A-4 By Joby Warrick Staff Writer A majority of the nation's biologists are convinced that a "mass extinction" of plants and animals is underway that poses a major threat to humans in the next century, yet most Americans are only dimly aware of the problem, a poll says. The rapid disappearance of species was ranked as one of the planet's gravest environmental worries, surpassing pollution, global warming and the thinning of the ozone layer, according to the survey of 400 scientists commissioned by New York's American Museum of Natural History.
