Helping Kids Cope with Media Coverage of War and Traumatic Events Prepared by the Media Awareness Network (MNet)
and Dr. Arlette Lefebvre, Staff Psychiatrist, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto
The intense media coverage that accompanies traumatic events, such as war, acts of terrorism and natural disasters, can be very disturbing for children and teens. Certain young people are particularly vulnerable and some can be seriously distressed simply by watching TV replays of such events.
Parents, educators, health practitioners and others who work with kids can help to lessen anxieties arising from the coverage of catastrophic events if they:
  • monitor media exposure
mediate media images and messages and
    mitigate the media's impact.
Monitor
Don't assume that children are unaware of news events.
It's almost impossible to be unaware of current events in our information age. Even very young children hear and see more than we think, so it's important to question them about what they have learned and how they're feeling.
Look for signs of anxiety in children.

Talking to Kids About the First Anniversary of 9/11
Prepared by the Media Awareness Network (MNet)
and Dr. Arlette Lefebvre, Staff Psychiatrist, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto
The first anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon September 11, 2002 is generating enormous media coverage. There will be a frenzy of speculation about possible escalation of the middle east conflict in the weeks before and after the anniversary, which is likely to heighten the anxiety level of many children and adults. Images of the twin towers collapsing will likely be replayed over and over in the period. There'll also probably be a great deal of speculation about the possibility of an attack on Iraq by the United States, as well as future attacks by the Al Qaeda network or other 'terrorists.'
Discussions about these potentially threatening situations can be very disturbing for kids, with some being particularly vulnerable. In fact, some young children could be traumatized simply by watching the replay of one-year-old events. Here are some tips and resources for parents, teachers, librarians and others working with young people.
What to focus on with kids:
  • Make extra time to listen to any concerns young people have during the 9/11 anniversary period and use this opportunity to educate them on how the media work and their role in society.

Older news items have been archived on the News Archive pages: Supreme Court sides with police in Miranda case
In the second of several cases touching on the Miranda warning this session, the Supreme Court today narrowly sided with the police. In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that because Michael Alvarado was not under arrest and was free to leave at any time, he did not have to be Mirandized, even though his interrogation took place inside a police station. Alvarado was being held under suspicion of a role in a murder. He was later convicted. Alvarado was 17 at the time. Justice Stephen Breyer, in his dissent, wrote that a reasonable person would not have felt free to leave the questioning at any time. The Court decision noted that age was not a factor in its decision. Parked cars are fair game for warrantless searches
The Supreme Court today ruled that a parked car can be searched without a warrant if the driver or a passenger is arrested near the car. The Court had already said that when arresting someone in a car, such a search was allowed - the new ruling allows the search even when the arrest is made to a passenger already outside of the car. The Court cited safety concerns as the primary reason for allowing the search. The Court ruled on the case of Thornton v United States 7-2, with Justices Stevens and Souter dissenting.

Historic Space Launch Attempt of SpaceShipOne Scheduled for June 21
Despite early achievements in space exploration during the 1960s, our "Space Age" is still in its infancy. We should expect to see many exciting "firsts" in space. The event scheduled for June 21, 2004, though, could have the biggest impact on space travel since Neil Armstrong made his own historic "small step" on July 20, 1969.
SpaceShipOne, a privately-developed rocket plane will launch into history on June 21 on a mission to become the world’s first commercial manned space vehicle. It will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles) into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful, it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable space access for future generations.

(CNN) Some have called them the "9/11 generation," U.S. students who must confront and try to understand a rapidly changing world. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Indonesia to Liberia, current events have taken on special importance for young Americans living in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks. But as much as most teachers and many students want to discuss what's making headlines, they say there's less and less time in the school day to do so. Mounting pressure to meet state- and nationally mandated curriculum requirements and assessment tests means current events rarely get discussed thoroughly, according to many U.S. educators. Stephen Johnson, a U.S. history teacher at Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas, said he does not have much time to rehash the day's news with his 11th-grade history students.
