Life in the Current Middle Ages
What is the SCA?
The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a group dedicated to researching and recreating the Middle Ages in the present. Many groups meet weekly, and at these meetings we dance, talk, study, learn, revel, and make plans. But first, let's get a little bit of info about the SCA in general.
Where did the SCA come from?
The avowed purpose of the SCA is the study and recreation of the European Middle Ages, its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, literature, etc. The SCA "period" is defined to be Western civilization before 1600 AD, concentrating on the Western European High Middle Ages. Under the aegis of the SCA we study dance, calligraphy, martial arts, cooking, metalwork, stained glass, costuming, literature... well, if they did it, somebody in the SCA does it (Except die of the Plague!). As you can probably guess, the thing that separates the SCA from a Humanities 101 class is the active participation in the learning process. To learn costuming, you design and build costumes. To learn SCA infantry fighting, you make armor, weapons, shields, etc., and put them on and go learn how it feels to wear them when somebody is swinging a (rattan) sword at you. To learn brewing, you make (and sample!) your own wines, meads and beers.

Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A society is a group of individuals that form a semi-closed system , in which most interactions are with other individuals belonging to the group. A society is a network of relationships between people. A society is an interdependent community . The casual meaning of society simply refers to a group of people living together in an ordered community. Societies are the main subject of study of the social sciences The origin of the word society comes from the Latin societas , a "friendly association with others." Societas is derived from socius meaning "companion" and thus the meaning of society is closely related to what is social . Implicit in the meaning of society is that its members share some mutual concern or interest in a common objective. As such, society is often used as synonymous with the collective citizenry of a country as directed through national institutions concerned with civic welfare. Peoples of many nations united by common political and cultural traditions, beliefs, or values are sometimes also said to be a society (for example: Judeo-Christian, Eastern, Western, etc). When used in this context, the term is being used as a means of contrasting two or more "societies" whose representative members represent alternative conflicting and competing worldviews. Also, some groups apply the title "society" to themselves, as the "American Society of Mathematics". In the United States, this is most common in

Unit Two: Studying Africa through the Social Sciences
Module Eight: Culture and Society in Africa Teacher's Edition Introduction to Module 8 PURPOSE:
Module Eight: Culture and Society in Africa is an examination of what is meant by the concepts of culture and society. We do not want to define these categories as if they are set in stone, but rather challenge students to think about the usefulness of as well as the problems created by such concepts. "Culture" and "society" are commonly thought of as the way of life of a group of people. While studying a people's "culture" can be meaningful, it can also lead to overgeneralizations and stereotypes about groups of people. In this module, we want to emphasize the diversity within cultures and societies as well as among them. At the same time, we will challenge students to think about similarities that they may see between themselves and people in Africa, realizing that they may not be so very different in some respects. We have chosen to focus on only a few aspects of culture and society since these categories are very broad and potentially inclusive of many things. Students should be challenged to think about other aspects of culture not included in this module, both in various regions of Africa and in their own cultures and societies. It should also be clear to students in this module that Africa is a culturally diverse place with a history of global connections with cultures inside and outside of Africa.

Current events are listed on the pages. Although the University does not offer courses in the creative arts or sport, there is a strong tradition of achievement in these fields, with many former students going on to gain international standing as artists, performers and athletes. Initiatives ensure that aspiring performers enrich their education with a high level of activity outside the lecture theatre. Examples include the art and music fellowships offered by Kettle's Yard and the Judith E Wilson visiting fellowship at the Faculty of English, which bring writers and performers into the academic environment, and the Centre of Cricketing Excellence , run jointly by Cambridge and Anglia Polytechnic Universities, which provides training and support.
