The Secret Service has also reported that, in recent years, a larger dollar amount of the notes detected as domestic passes has been produced outside the United States. Since 1991, the dollar amount of counterfeit U.S. notes detected while in circulation and produced abroad has exceeded the dollar amount of those produced domestically (see fig. 3). In fiscal year 1994, foreign-produced notes represented approximately 66 percent of total domestic passes detected. Figure 3: Secret Service Domestic Pass Data, Fiscal Years 1987-94 (See figure in printed edition.)The ink jet counterfeit is detectable by the small colored dots used to make up the image (A). To create the image, ink jet printers spray tiny droplets of ink from the printer head through a small gap of air onto the paper (see fig. III.2, A). The ink jet counterfeit has small red, blue, yellow, and black dots that make up the image; the genuine note does not have these colored dots. Figure III.3: Office Machine-copied Notes (See figure in printed edition.)One identifiable defect in color machine-copied counterfeit notes is the loss of some of the shading lines in the face and hair (A). Source: U.S. Secret Service. (See figure in printed edition.) OFFICE MACHINE-COPIED NOTES - Appendix III:0.3 Copying genuine notes on office copier machines is one of the simplest methods employed to produce counterfeits. Office machine copiers, which include black and white, monochromatic, and color copiers, use an electronic transfer of toner to paper. Black and white copiers apply black toner only; monochromatic copiers apply one color of toner at a time; and color copiers use a simultaneous combination of yellow, light blue, bright pink, and sometimes black toners to produce all colors.

Making the Money
Federal Reserve notes are printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing at facilities in Washington, D.C., and Fort Worth, Texas. Bills printed in Fort Worth have the small letters "FW" in the lower right hand corner, to the immediate left of the plate serial number. Legal Statement
This phrase is essential and appears on every bill. It ensures the bill can be used to repay debts and provide a standard to measure what is owed. Signature
All currency is signed by the Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States. The people in these positions change, so not every bill has the same name on it. Look at a bill you have in your pocket. Whose names are on it? Series
See picture above ) The series marks the year in which the design of a bill was first used. Small design changes are indicated by a letter after the year (for example1990B). The series year is not necessarily the year the bill was printed.

U.S. TREASURY AND FEDERAL RESERVE ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR REDESIGNED NOTES
NexGen notes are latest in series to add anti-counterfeiting features
In keeping with their strategy of maintaining the security of Federal Reserve notes by enhancing the design of U.S. currency every seven to ten years, the Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (Bureau) and the Federal Reserve Board today announced plans to release the next generation of redesigned notes, with improved security features to deter counterfeiting. The new design, referred to as NexGen, affects the $100, $50, and $20 notes. Circulation of the NexGen series could begin as early as fall 2003 with the introduction of the redesigned $20 note. The $100 and $50 notes will follow in twelve to eighteen months. Consistent with past design changes, the NexGen notes will remain the same size and use similar portraits and historical images to maintain an American appearance. The NexGen designs will include the introduction of subtle background colors. While color is not in itself a security feature, the use of color provides the opportunity to add additional features that could assist in deterring counterfeiting. The introduction of additional colors will also help consumers to identify the different denominations. The new series will retain current security features, including watermarks similar to the portrait and visible when held up to a light, enhanced security threads that glow under ultraviolet light, microprinting, and color-shifting ink that changes color when the note is tilted.

“You may be whatever you resolve to be.” Lieutenant General Thomas Jonathan Jackson
Thomas J. Jackson is one of the most revered of all Confederate commanders. On the night of May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville after conducting a reconnaissance of the Union position, Jackson was returning to his own lines when he was wounded by some of his own men. As a result, Jackson's left arm was amputated. He died 8 days later on May 10, 1863, from pneumonia. Immediately following his amputation, General Lee wrote of Jackson: " He has lost his left arm; but I have lost my right arm." Stonewall Jackson is buried in Lexington, Virginia.

EBSCO uses historical price data and recent information received from publishers to project price increases for the upcoming year. For the past few years, information from publishers regarding subscription prices has been received later each year. Publisher-provided information on pricing is even more limited this year than it was at the same time last year. The prudent course is to be cautious in price projections as we must rely primarily on historical trends. Based on information available to date, the projected base price increase (before currency impact) for academic and academic medical libraries is 8 to 10 percent for U.S. and non-U.S. titles. Pricing Factors
Currency Impact
Currency markets are volatile, making this factor the most difficult to project. The U.S. dollar has dropped substantially in value against the euro and British pound over the last few months. In fact, the U.S. dollar is at its lowest point in roughly 16 months against the euro and at a six-month low against the British pound. This could spell higher price increases on non-U.S. material for U.S. customers. Conversely, this is positive news for customers whose purchasing currency is euros. Customers paying in British pounds could likely see price increases above the base on euro-priced journals and increases slightly below the base on U.S. material. Additionally, customers in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa should see price increases below the base increase level because of the comparative increase of the value of the currencies of their countries vs. the U.S. dollar and British pound.

China rejects US demands for currency float
By Nick Beams 21 October 2003 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The US calls for a yuan revaluation have come under fire from numbers of international economists who point out that US job losses are not caused by an undervalued Chinese currency and warn that such a move could have major consequences for the international financial system. One of the biggest fears is that a float would set off a series of collapses in the highly indebted Chinese banking system. Furthermore, it is estimated that not even a 30 percent revaluation of the yuan would assist US manufacturers, while adversely affecting US firms with large investments in China. Morgan Stanley chief economist Stephen Roach has insisted that China is being made the scapegoat for problems which have their source in the US economy and the policies of the Bush administration, in particular the growth in the US budget deficit resulting from tax cuts.

ANALYSIS
And now, currency wars
By Marc Erikson
Complementing its strategic-military doctrine of preemptive action against putative constructors and proliferators of weapons of mass destruction, the administration of US President George W Bush has turned to preemption in the financial sphere to challenge unpalatable currency regimes and counteract their alleged ill effects on the US economy. China, Japan, and other Asian nations are the targeted offenders ... and, for a change of pace, victory in the war unleashed at the Group of Seven (G7) Dubai meetings is to be achieved not through overwhelming US strength, but through deliberately induced US (dollar) weakness.
To figure that one out, you have to go back to September 1, Labor Day in the United States. On that occasion, Bush, accompanied by his chief political strategist Karl Rove, stood in the driving rain at an operating engineers training center in Richfield, Ohio, and told assembled trade unionists, "We've lost thousands of jobs in manufacturing, some of it because of productivity gains - but some of it because production moved overseas ... One way to make sure that the manufacturing sector does well is to send a message overseas, [to] say, look, we expect there to be a level playing field when it comes to trade."
