Wooden Nickels on the Internet
On December 5, 1931, the Citizen's Bank of Tenino (pronounced 10-9-0), Washington failed and created a shortage of money. This left the merchants of the area unable to get change without traveling about 30 miles over mountainous roads in automobiles ill suited to that purpose, on roads that were built for horses and mules to traverse. The average round trip was about four hours. Much too long for merchants to be gone from their stores. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce resulted in the local newspaper printing up the first issue of wooden money in the United States.
In 1933, Blaine, Washington issued round wooden coins when their bank failed. These were the first issues of wooden money in the U.S.
Just when the adage "Don’t take any Wooden Nickels!" was added to the American language is unclear, but the reasons are easy to understand. First of all, each wood had an expiration date and generally even a specific final redemption time. If you were in a possession of a handful of wooden nickels that expired at noon today and your best customer came through the door at five minutes to noon, it would be difficult to get to centennial headquarters to cash them in. Many Wooden Nickels also said they had to be unbroken, and the rectangular "Flats" were pretty fragile.

163. Soft Curency Economics Paper - Body
Classic essay by Warren B. Mosler on why, under a fiat money system, the purpose of the tax system is to give a value to money.
http://www.warrenmosler.com/docs/docs/soft0004.htm
Soft Currency Economics by
Warren B. Mosler
Introduction
In the midst of great abundance our leaders promote privation. We are told that national health care is unaffordable, while hospital beds are empty. We are told that we cannot afford to hire more teachers, while many teachers are unemployed. And we are told that we cannot afford to give away school lunches, while surplus food goes to waste. When people and physical capital are employed productively, government spending that shifts those resources to alternative use forces a trade-off. For example, if thousands of young men and women were conscripted into the armed forces the country would receive the benefit of a stronger military force. However, if the new soldiers had been home builders, the nation may suffer a shortage of new homes. This trade-off may reduce the general welfare of the nation if Americans place a greater value on new homes than additional military protection. If, however, the new military manpower comes not from home builders but from individuals who were unemployed, there is no trade-off. The real cost of conscripting home builders for military service is high; the real cost of employing the unemployed is negligible. The essence of the political process is coming to terms with the inherent trade-offs we face in a world of limited resources and unlimited wants. The idea that people can improve their lives by depriving themselves of surplus goods and services contradicts both common sense and any respectable economic theory. When there are widespread unemployed resources as there are today in the United States, the trade-off costs are often minimal, yet mistakenly deemed unaffordable.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
88th Congress, 2nd Session
SEPTEMBER 21, 1964 The text of this Congressional document is reproduced in whole but without index. It must be remembered that it was published in 1964 and facts have changed due to changes in laws. Particularly, both gold and silver have been de-monetized and currencies have changed accordingly; and, especially, statistical references are out of date. It incorporates economic dogmas of that era. In some places the doublespeak has an "Alice in Wonderland" quality. What it does do is leave no doubt about who runs the U. S. economy, and how money is created. CONTENTS Letter of transmittal to members of the Subcommittee on Domestic Finance...

“You may be whatever you resolve to be.” Lieutenant General Thomas Jonathan Jackson
Thomas J. Jackson is one of the most revered of all Confederate commanders. On the night of May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville after conducting a reconnaissance of the Union position, Jackson was returning to his own lines when he was wounded by some of his own men. As a result, Jackson's left arm was amputated. He died 8 days later on May 10, 1863, from pneumonia. Immediately following his amputation, General Lee wrote of Jackson: " He has lost his left arm; but I have lost my right arm." Stonewall Jackson is buried in Lexington, Virginia.

Welcome to my website. I am a collector of Civil War era Southern States issued currency, Confederate bonds, U.S. Fractional currency, and Civil War issues of Harper's Weekly. Please contact me if you wish to buy or sell any of the items that I collect. I usually have auctions of coins and/or currency on eBay.
