About Us Rutgers, Olympic style Winter game fun at home and Salt Lake By Jessie Mishkin, Dragon with Matches Published: 2/21/2002 Forget Iran, Iraq and North Korea — the real axis of terror is the International Skating Union. Winter Olympics without scandal would be like a Targum Opinions column without a healthy dose of self-righteous smarminess — would anybody really bother to check it out? Scandal has unfortunately overshadowed the positive aspects of nationalism and athleticism in the 2002 Winter Games. Starting with the early '90s hoopla over bribes taken by Olympic committee judges to give Salt Lake City the 2002 Olympics, to fears about the "Mormonization" of the games, to the accusations against speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno for throwing a trial race so an American teammate could make the team, to the thigh-slicing tackle that brought him down to silver, scandal has been the true draw of the games. Figure skating has proven once again to be part technical skill, part artistry and part total farce. Not since Tonya and Nancy has the world been so inflamed by the seedy side of axels and lutzes. The decision by the International Olympic Committee to award two gold medals to original medal winners, Russians Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze and to the winners in public opinion, Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier (after a French judge admitted to being leaned on to favor the Russians in exchange for a vote for the French in ice dancing) has convinced many that figure skating cannot be an Olympic sport because it so hard to measure, and thus subject to corruption.

Curling: more than just ice and brooms
Sidelines
By Jennifer Nauman Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 Ihave decided to become Croatian. Canadian-Croatian. Not because I admire the rich cultural heritage and traditions of these two peoples, but because I want to be in the Olympics really bad.
Yeah, I'm sick of columns about the Olympics, too, but this column is about CURLING. And I consider myself an authority on curling because as far as I know, I'm the only American to have ever curled, or at least admit to it. So my Croatian-Canadian viewpoint on curling is obliviously the best EVER.
I hate ignorant Americans who make fun of curling because I was a member of a curling team until I realized just how stupid curling was.
I learned to curl when I lived in upper Michigan, which is less "The Wolverine State" and more "The State that Knows the Words to 'O, Canada.'" And as very excitable NBC commentators constantly reminded us for 15 days, curling is bigger than hockey in Canada.
When I was 7, my figure skating coach decided we needed to learn to curl, mostly because she desperately wanted to be Canadian and probably thought it would look good on a citizenship application. (I could tell she was a Canadian wannabe because she wore a lot of pastel-striped sweaters and was very polite.) So we first graders worked our hardest to become Canadian, even politely pretending to get excited about sweeping ice in front of a huge, sliding rock as we tried not to fall on our very cold asses — at least until we revolted eight months later by pulling all of the bristles out the brooms.

http://www.goodcurling.net/Media/Press Kit/olympic_sport_of_curling.htm
THE OLYMPIC SPORT OF CURLING Submitted by Lisa Schoeneberg Curling history dates back to the 16th century, when Scottish farmers passed time during long, gray winters by sliding large granite stones, retrieved from nearby channels at low tide, across frozen lochs. Curling appeared as a demonstration sport in four Olympic Winter Games: 1924 in Chamonix, France, Lake Placid in 1932, 1988 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and 1992 in Albertville, France. Curling made its Olympic medal debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan. The Game is played between two four-member teams who use stones with different colored handles. Each game consists of ten ends, which are similar to innings in baseball. During an end, each team member alternates throwing stones toward a circular target area, called the house, the center of which is approximately 93 feet away. Only one team scores points per end. The team with their stones closest to the center of the target area, called the button, gets one point for each stone between the button and the opposing teams nearest stone. After each end is completed, play is switched to the house at the other end of the sheet.
The Free Guard Zone is the space between the hogline and the tee line, excluding the house (see diagram, next page). No stone lying in this zone may be removed from play by the opposition until the first 4 stones in any end have come to rest. Any opponents stone(s) removed from the Free Guard Zone prior to the first 4 stones being played, the opposing team will place their stone back in it’s original position and play continues.

    http://mnmn.essortment.com/whatiscurling_repl.htm
    What is curling?
What is curling? It is often compared to lawn bowling on ice. The unique feature of the game is the use of brooms to sweep the ice.
Like its landlocked cousin, golf, the origins of the sport of curling are murky with both the countries of Holland and Scotland claiming birthrights. Scotland stakes its creationist laurels on the oldest known curling stone with the date 1511 inscribed on its surface. The best evidence trotted out by the Dutch, who popularized ice skating and would seem to have an historical pedigree when it came to games played on the ice, is a painting from the mid-16th century by the Flemish painter Pieter Breughel. The canvas depicts a spirited game of curling on a frozen city canal, replete with curling stones and broom-wielding players. Regardless of its rudimentary beginnings, contemporary curling is a gift of Scotland. The sweeping of stones worn smooth from the scraping of the North Sea across frozen lochs was an established Scottish game by the 1600s and the modern version of curling was a national mania by the 1800s. In 1838 the Royal Caledonian Curling Club (originally called the Grand Caledonian Curling Club) was ushered into existence in Edinburgh and became the definitive governing body for the game. bodyOffer(27711) One of the things the RCCC did was standardize the rules for international play and those rules were needed as energetic Scottish emigrants were busily establishing the game on distant shores. The Royal Montreal Curling Club had been set up in Canada in 1807 and there was undoubtedly curling matches taking place on United States lakes from the time of the Revolution. The first organized curling club in the United States was the Orchard Lake Curling Club, chartered in 1832 at the home of Dr. Robert Burns. Dr. Burns and the boys curled on Lake St. Clair, near Detroit, Michigan.

    History
There is solid evidence that curling was a sport in both Scotland and the Low Countries during the 16th century. The oldest known curling stone, found in Scotland, bears the date 1511, and a 1560 work by the Flemish painter, Pieter Breughel, shows a busy Dutch curling scene, complete with brooms. The game was played on frozen marshes in Scotland, using "channel stones" that had been worn smooth by the action of water, while the Dutch curled on the same frozen canals where ice skating flourished. As with golf, the question of where curling was "invented" will probably never be answered, but the Scots certainly have to be credited both with developing the modern version of the sport and with promoting the game in America. Scottish immigrants organized the Royal Montreal Curling Club in 1807 and the Orchard Lake, Michigan, Club in 1832. The Grand Caledonian Curling Club (later the Royal Caledonian Curling Club) was founded in 1838 at Edinburgh to become Scotland's national governing body and to standardize rules for international play. A branch of the Royal Caledonian was established in Canada in 1852 and the Grand National Curling Club of America, also an affiliate of the Royal Caledonian, was founded in 1867.

All the World's an Olympic Sport
by jacknose February 25, 2002 I hereby submit to the wisdom of Vince McMahon, Mark Burnett, and Gatorade. Life is a sport, sport is entertainment, and entertainment is life. I will drink it up from here on out. I will no longer be a sports snob. I will no longer have standards. I will no longer proclaim that curling and ice dancing are not sports. I will no longer question golf, billiards, bowling, surfing, auto racing, snowboarding, and figure skating. I will no longer suggest that sports require athleticism. I will no longer proclaim that judges are for pageants. In the spirit of my transformation, I will petition the IOC for the following “sports” to be included in future Olympic Games: Professional Wrestling. I cannot think of a better sport for the Olympic stage than professional wrestling. Fixed outcomes will be assumed, but we, the audience, will gladly accept the pretentiousness as long as the costumes are tight, the insults are loud, and the faux fighting is raw. Winners will be determined by television ratings. Rubik’s Cube Race.
