Olympic games should include sports, not games
By Michael Reiter Published: Thursday, February 21, 2002 I would like to slide a 42-pound stone on a sheet of ice and have it stop approximately 140 feet away on a circle outlined on the ice. Of course I would not be able to do this by myself. I would need the aid of a couple teammates who will use their brooms to condition the ice as the stone moves, making sure the stone travels in the right direction at the right speed. I could even win a medal in the Olympics.
This is curling — a Winter Olympic event.
To be blatantly honest, it seems that anyone with good enough hand-eye coordination and the ability to use a broom (prior experience requires sweeping your dorm room) could be a curler.
It does not take exceptional athleticism, agility or strength to be an Olympic curler. Speed skating, figure skating and cross country skiing take exceptional athleticism. A professional beer drinker can be an Olympic curler. As simple as curling seems, I will give it more credit than I feel I should.
According to the World Curling Federation's web site, "the game contains elements of great skill, strategy, finesse, exertion and endeavor." But bowling certainly involves the skill of curling without the aid of fellow teammates. Why can't bowling be in the Olympics?

Congratulations on Olympic curling Gold

The gold medal performance by the all-Scottish GB women’s curling team has been praised by Deputy Sports Minister Dr Elaine Murray. After Rhona Martin’s rink pulled off a memorable victory over Switzerland - bringing Britain its first gold medal of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the first gold since ice dancers Torvill and Dean in 1984 – Dr Murray said the five-member squad had done themselves, Scotland and Great Britain proud. The team, whose other members are Debbie Knox, Fiona MacDonald, Janice Rankin and Margaret Morton, had a roller-coaster route to the gold medal, scraping through the qualifying group, winning two play-off games in one day, overcoming hot favourites Canada on Wednesday before tonight’s success. The match was won with the last stone of the final end.

—Robert Burns, "Tam Samson's Elegy" (1787) —Sir John Sinclair's Statistical Account of Scotland" (1781-1799)

Today, curling is an international Olympic sport played by more than two million people in thirty nations, but its ancestral homeland is Scotland. Curling dates back to before the 16th century, when it was first mentioned in Scottish records. In 1838, Edinburgh's Royal Caledonian Curling Club (RCCC) was established and the rules for play standardized. During the 20th century, curling increasingly became an indoor sport as ice rinks were built throughout Scotland. Curling is played on a sheet - a lane of ice 46 yards long and 14 yards wide. At each end of the sheet, a house of concentric circles is painted around a center button. The goal of the game is to slide the curling stone as close as possible to the button. A curling team consists of four players, who deliver (slide) two stones each in alternate turns with the opposing team. When all sixteen stones are delivered, it constitutes an end. Matches have 10 and sometimes 12 ends. Each stone that winds up within the house and closer to the button than the other team's stone scores a point. The team with the most points after 10 or 12 ends wins the match.

Origins

The first evidence of curling was found in Scotland in the 16th century. After the fall of Quebec City in 1759, Scottish soldiers had time on their hands and melted down cannon balls to form kettle-shaped irons so they could play their favourite game on the St.Charles River. Scottish settlers across the country started curling clubs and by the 1920s the growth of the sport in Canada had far exceeded its development in any other nation. Today, more than 1.5 million Canadians enjoy the sport.
Curling was a demonstration sport at the 1924, 1932, 1988 and 1992 Olympics, and enjoyed full-medal status for the first time at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games at (Karuizawa) Nagano, Japan.
The Sport
Two four-member teams alternately deliver stones to target circles at the opposite end of a sheet of ice. Each curler - leads first, followed by the seconds, thirds (or vice-skips) and skips - throws two stones, each of which must be delivered (handle released) before sliding over the nearest hogline (boundary line).
With the four-rock free-guard-zone rule being used at the Olympic Games as in all other World Curling Federation events, the leads cannot remove each other's stones.

Olympic curlers pay tribute to Scotland's sporting greats Wednesday 24 April 2002 Today, Scotland's Curling Olympic champions, led by skip Rhona Martin, visited the temporary Scottish Sports Hall of Fame (SSHOF) exhibition at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh to pay their own personal tribute to Scotland's sporting greats by making their nominations for the SSHOF. In a formal presentation they handed over to the Museum on loan, personal Olympic kit from their historic gold medal winning performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games held in Salt Lake City. The skip of the curling team, Rhona Martin said: "Winning gold for Scotland and Team GB was a fabulous feeling. I am delighted to be asked to lend personal Olympic kit to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in which so many of Scotland's sporting greats are profiled. Competing at an Olympic Games is a fantastic experience and I hope seeing some of our Olympic kit up close so soon after our win will help bring the Olympic Games alive for the exhibition's younger visitors."
The exhibition profiles 100 of Scotland's greatest sportsmen and women including 1924 Olympic track gold medallist Eric Liddell, 1967 World Curling champion Chuck Hay and 1994 Commonwealth Games champion Yvonne Murray Mooney MBE. HRH Princess Royal and Sir Jackie Stewart are Patrons of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

Curling's Proponents Look for a Clean Sweep

Tom Brooke on curling: "If you can introduce the game to [Americans], and they recognize the competitiveness of it, you can't believe how it turns them on."
(Dennis Drenner for The Post)
Brooke executed the procedure on his kitchen floor, and there was no denying it: Armed with his broom, Brooke looked like a determined janitor, attacking with frenzy a particular spot on the linoleum. "It's a matter of introducing the game, getting people to know about it," Brooke, 72, said later from his living room couch. "Americans are so competitive. If you can introduce the game to them, and they recognize the competitiveness of it, you can't believe how it turns them on." Curling, a four-person team sport played on ice and dominated by Canada and other cold-weather countries, will be an Olympic medal sport for the first time in February's Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. The United States is merely average in curling and unlikely to win a medal. Curling is a competition of strategy and concentration that bears some resemblance to many things: shuffleboard, bowling, darts, golf, billiards and bocce. But to equate curling with any of those is as satisfactory as likening a candle's flicker to an inferno.
