WINTER OLYMPICS CURLING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1924 CURLING originated in the 16th century in Scotland, where games were played during winter on frozen ponds, lochs and marshes. The earliest-known curling stones came from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth and date back to 1511. The earliest reports of curling came from Paisley Abbey, Scotland, in 1541. In the early days of the sport, stones were taken from river bottoms. In the 1600s, stones with handles were introduced, allowing a delivery style similar to what is used today. The key developments in the sport in the 20th century have been the standardization of the stone and the use of indoor, refrigerated ice facilities. Curling for men was included in the program in 1924, and was a demonstration sport in 1932. At the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games, it was a demonstration sport for both men and women. In 1936 and 1946, German curling (Eisschiessen) was also a demonstration sport at the Olympic Winter Games. World Championships have been held for men since 1959 and for women since 1979. Curling made its Olympic debut at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games with the men's and women's tournaments. Canada, led by skip Sandra Schmirler, won the inaugural women's gold medal, defeating Denmark 9-5 in the final. Switzerland, skipped by Patrick Huerlimann, upset Canada 9-3 to earn the men's gold medal.

Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz link No; gotta weigh in on vince's side here - olympic soccer is just silly. A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times
One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

I'm glad you like it, Fritz, but curling strikes me as shuffleboard on ice. On the other hand, unlike figure skating, at least the outcome in curling is objectively determined. Curling As far as athletes go, curlers are among the most familiar and have perhaps the most down-to-earth aura. A rarity among world-class athletes, most curlers have day jobs and families to raise.
The curler is your neighbour, says Mike Harris, now a CBC analyst. "It's just a small-town game. It's a grassroots game that everyone can identify with."
"Everyone can curl, but to get good at it is very hard," Harris qualifies. At national and international levels, curlers display a depth of knowledge, skill and experience which puts them on par with other competitive athletes.
To watch the sport is to feel the tension and to dissect a strategy is to see the intricacy beyond stepping on the ice, throwing a few heavy stones (also called rocks) and seeing who's left standing at the end. In fact, the golfers who are so exalted in contemporary culture would be hard-pressed to top the delicate touch, agility, precision, strategizing and ability to read and react to changing situations and capitalize on opportunities that will be on display in this season’s curling championships.

    Jones wins curling worlds
WebPosted Sun, 25 Apr 2004 09:33:01 EDT CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Canada's Colleen Jones defeated Norway's Dordi Nordby on Saturday to win her second career women's world curling championship. The Halifax rink dominated all match long, counting stones in three of the first four ends en route to an 8-4 win over Nordby. Canada's Colleen Jones is a two-time world curling champion. (CP Photo) "Hallelujah," said Jones when asked by CBC how it felt to be the world champion again. "It feels terrific" Jones is a six-time Canadian champion, but over the years she's struggled at the world championships. Jones won her other world title in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2001. But she finished fifth in 1982 and 1999 and fourth in 2002. At last year's world championships in Winnipeg, Jones lost in the final to the United States.
