Curling: Yes, it's an Olympic sport
By Cynthia J. Faulkner
ESPN.com
NEW YORK "You do what? Is that the one with the broom?" It's a question curling's Team Lank frequently hears, although more people are familiar with the sport since it became an Olympic sport in 1998. Before then, few people this side of Canada had the slightest clue about the event that involves sliding rocks and sweeping brooms. Team Lank's Erika Brown, left, and Allison Pottinger sweep a path for a shot at the U.S. Olympic Curling Team Trials. "It's still a lot better than it used to be," said "lead" Tracy Sachtjen, "but it still needs more exposure." Certainly, people in the United States don't flock to indoor ice rinks to watch curling, but Team Lank's vice skip Erika Brown said, "The recognition and the knowledge that the game even exists and at least sort of vague idea in your head of what we're talking about it's definitely there now more so than it was 10 or 15 years ago." Team Lank so named for skip (or captain) Patti Lank is one of six women's teams and seven men's teams currently competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Ogden, Utah. The winner of the weeklong, double round-robin men's and women's tournaments qualify for the Salt Lake City Winter Games in February.

by Timothy D. Jacques
Curling? What's that? Weightlifting? An old fashioned way of making butter? Nope, it's one of the fastest growing winter sports and a recent addition to the Winter Olympics. Shrouded in nearly 500 years of history, curling is a social sport of fitness and finesse. It's one of the few games that can be played at all age levels and physical abilities. But there's an underlying question with the American public.... WHAT THE HECK IS IT

Let's learn a little more about Curling:
Curling, A Brief History The Basics of Curling The Team Delivery of the Stone and Types of Shots ... Sources Cited Three years ago, when I first stepped on the ice at my local curling club, I thought "What was I getting myself into? Stepping on an icy surface with a slipperly slider and granite stones? I must be nuts." Sure, I was a nut...a curling nut.

CURLING 101
by Timothy D. Jacques
Curling, A Brief History
The precise beginnings of curling are a bit of a mystery. Its origins are hotly debated between the Scots and Continental Europeans. Was it a purely Scottish invention or was it imported by Flemish travelers under the reign of King James VI? Recent discoveries of lost artwork, diaries and archaeological finds has sparked a number of theories, but nothing is conclusive. The earliest of graphic curling records center around 16 th century Dutch paintings by Pieter Bruegel and R. de Baudous. The paintings show a number of winter motifs with background characters playing a game of "ice shooting". Other paintings have children sliding wooden discs or frozen clumps of earth along a frozen pond. In Scotland, a 16 th century diary of a Scottish monk describes a challenge between two friends with "stones-on-ice". In the early 17 th century, an entry in a Glasgow Assembly records tells of a incident where a local Bishop is accused of a terrible act: He was a curler on the ice on the Sabbath Though the debate still rages on in some quarters, it's generally acknowledged that Scotland was the country that developed the game of curling in today's recognizable form.

Curling
The sport of curling was demonstrated in Ottawa at the Canadian Special Olympic Winter Games in January 2000, and hosted for the first time at a Nova Scotia Special Olympic Winter Games in February 2002. This competition was hosted at 14 Wing Greenwood, where 8 teams from across the Province and our guests from Prince Edward Island put on a performance which should lead to continued growth of the sport, and hopefully representation from Nova Scotia at the 2004 National Games.
Canadian Special Olympic Curling Rules follow very closely to the rules governing generic curling, and these are outlined below. As with all Special Olympic sports, we strongly encourage our coaches to obtain NCCP Certification, and strive to deliver the best quality in sport programs.

Curling Through the Years

Encyclopedia: Curling
The sport of curling dates as far back as the early 1500s in Scotland and was reportedly brought to North America by British troops in the 1700s during the Revolutionary War. Curling made its Olympic debut as a demonstration sport at the original Olympic Games in 1924 . It kept the same classification in the 1932 Lake Placid Games but then went on a 56-year Olympic hiatus, until it returned as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Games . Curling made its debut as an official medal sport at the 1998 Nagano Games
Ten men's teams and ten women's teams will compete in Salt Lake City.
As far as the actual game goes, think shuffleboard on ice combined with the strategy of a game of bowls or bocce.
Each match is made up of ends, or periods, where two teams of four players each take turns sliding a 42-pound polished granite stone down a sheet of ice towards a bullseye made up of four concentric circles. This bullseye, which is 12 ft in diameter, is known as the "house" and its center the "tee." The tee is located 126 ft from where the shooter starts.
When the stone is released by the shooter, it is done with a special technique that involves a twist of the wrist. Like a bowling ball hooks (or curves) down an alley, so too does the stone as it glides down the ice. This curve is known as the "curl."

    Winter Sports of the Olympics
The 2010 Olympic winter sports competitions are to be held in Supernatural B.C.. For recreation and sports there is no better place than British Columbia. With our towering mountains carved by glacier fed rivers we have it all for world class winter sports. Olympic sports winter competitions include: Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating, Skeleton, Skiing, Snowboarding.
    Biathlon
The word biathlon stems from the Greek word for two contests. In this case cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship which makes it one of the most practical winter sports. Rock paintings found in Norway depict bow hunters on wood skis and date back to about 3000 B.C. It was formally introduced as an Olympic sports winter event in 1960 though it had made many demonstration appearances since the first Winter Sports Olympics in France. See the history of the Olympics
    The Winter Sport of Bobsledding
There are three events in Olympic Bobsledding: two-man, four-man and two-woman. Sleds that look similar to the modern day bobsled have been raced for more than 200 years. Some historians say the sport started in Switzerland in the late 1800s when someone put runners on a tobbagan to get more spead. Early racerswould bob back and forth in an effort to get more speed. It failed to increase the speed but the name stuck. Probably the most famous bobsled team of all was the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team. On January 5, 1898 the organized competition was held with five-passenger sleds. Two of the passengers had to be women. The winter sport became an Olympic sport when it was included in the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix, France, in 1924.
